Does My Thai Wife Like Living In A Farang Country After 1 Year?

In this video I interview my Thai wife Nune to find out if she likes living in Europe. We left Thailand 14 months ago for a new life in Ireland and in this video Nune shares what she thinks of leaving Thailand to live in Ireland. I ask Nune what she misses about Thailand and what she likes/dislikes about life in Ireland.#thairishtimes #leavingthailand #movetothailand

Thailand does the people aspect of life very well. On every level, it's a very social country. Indonesia even more so. I guess in the West we have lost that. The UK I grew up in is not the UK I see today. A German friend of mine quite rightly pointed out that life in general takes place on the streets. Climate and rules dictate otherwise in North Europe. There are of course downsides to the extended family culture. One of my cousins is married to an Italian and you basically marry into a family. I would imagine something similar in Thailand. I am not sure however if Thailand would be my first choice 2nd home in SE Asia but I am still hugely positive about the country. This does not apply to many expats. I suppose the answer is one foot in both countries.

I'm from England and have lived in two other countries - Australia and the U.S. Now back in England. Despite being similar cultures, I still found that it took a long time to begin to adjust and I never felt completely at home. For sure, Nune will be having an even bigger challenge than I faced due to big cultural differences. Here's the issue for Western men married to ladies from more traditional cultures... When they do adapt, they might adopt the same mindset of the Western women they were trying to get away from. Just a generalisation and wish you both the best of luck.

I too am from the UK and have lived overseas too, including the US, I actually found the US much harder to live in than mainland Europe, ironically I lived for a period of time in Taiwan and I found their Americanisms comforting... go figure! My conclusion is that superficially the UK and the US are very similar and its much easier to lose the perspective that they are fundamentally different, as such when you notice them they are much more magnified. When your not expecting familiarity its pleasant when it happens and much easier to adapt when you don't.

I love my Thai wife. We’ve been married 15 years with a lovely daughter. We are very comfortable in Dublin. I would love my wife to be so articulate in the the English language as this lady.

Pete, your wife seems like such a beautiful person inside and out, as well as very intelligent and adaptable to new experiences and environments. As a couple you are a match made in heaven. I'm very much looking forward to my next visit to Ireland. Aussie here, but in my opinion the Irish accent is the best in the world. Take good care of each other❤

I get what she’s saying about missing the noise, and its not just in Bangkok. It’s in all areas of busier parts of Thailand, she’s referring to the general hustle and bustle. The street vendors cooking something up, the mopeds wizzing around, the ‘HELLO, WEEEELCOME’ in 7-11. Weirdly its one of the things I miss most when I’m out of Thailand.

This video got randomly suggested to me on my home page. I found it very interesting. Most Thai people from my experience go to other countries to get the higher wage but a lot of them miss Thailand and are looking to return at retirement age. If possible would be nice if you could come for a visit back to Thailand. If not possible then maybe just have to push through hard times and save up as much as possible. Good luck with everything.

My Thai wife has lived in Australia for 48 years now and, although we get back to Thailand a few times every year she normally can't wait to be heading back to Oz within days of arriving in Thailand. Some of her common comments are "get me out of here, these Thais are doing my head in" or "damn they are just so fickle and child like" or "where the hell are they ,they were supposed to be here hours ago". And why do we travel to Thailand you may ask, it's cause we are foodies .

Hey Pete and Nune, been watch your content for a while now but never commented until now. First off, great content you are creating from your interviews with expats in Thailand, asking tough questions for all of us thinking about Thailand as a retirement landing spot. Secondly, way to go girl! for Nune, your strong-willed, intelligent modern women. As an Asian-American who have witnessed seen, witnessed and faced prejudice, stereotypes over my 40 plus yrs stay in America, there are times that we need to stand up to ignorance. Nune will go far in life in the western world because she knows that Irleand will give her more opportunities for career success versus Thailand where strong-minded women are often frowned upon or criticized. Sorry for my ramblings but couldn't be more prouder for individuals like her. You guys are great for each other. Life is about learning and adapting. Cheers from sunny California!

I am a New Zealander who has lived in Thailand for 14 years. Love Thailand and the people Nune I understand what you mean about Westerners rushing everywhere. I still find it a bit frustrating how Thai's plan something. Then at the last minute. Change direction. But I always have laugh about it too. I admire you for the life you have chosen and the guts you have to do it. I wish you all the very best for your future and happiness.
