Why I'm Leaving Thailand After 12 years
After 12 years of living in Thailand I am moving back to Ireland. What an amazing journey the last 12 years has been. I've met amazing people throughout my time in Thailand, people who I'll never forget. It really has been a life-changing experience and I am very sad to go.
I came to Thailand when I was 23, a young kid filled with adventure. I really wanted to see what the world had to offer. What an adventure it was! I loved every minute of it. The last 2 years have been especially memorable since I started this KZread channel. I got to meet interesting people and share these experiences with all of you. I am truly humbled and honored that people watched my videos. Creating digital content took me way out of my comfort zone and in doing so I unleashed something in me that I never thought I had.
If you're reading this then you may be wondering why I'm going back. Well.... in this video you'll find out.
Thank you for coming on this journey with me.
Pete

I was informed by the members of my group about you leaving Thailand. Most of them did subscribe to your channel after our interview. Immediately I decided to check out your video. Its sad to see you leave Pete. You are a good man. And I literally felt my heart sink and could sense your pain. I felt as if someone I knew for years and someone close to me has left - even though I hardly met you for a few hours that day. Whatever you decide in life Pete - I sincerely wish you all the best. You are a wonderful human being. And I wish you the best for whatever life has to offer you. Take care my friend & fellow youtube. Until we meet again. For many of us, Thailand is like a lover that we can never get rid of, never forget, never get out of our heads. If you go home for 10 years not a day will go by that you won’t think of this country. You will never stop missing it. It’s something that is hard to put into words but it’s unmistakable.

I haved lived in Bangkok for 27 years. I have a solid business and am happy with both my professional, and family life, here in Bangkok, nonetheless, one of the hardest things about living here is watching virtually all of your friends eventually leave. Very few people come here at a relatively young age and spend the rest of there life here. It can be unnerving to feel as though you are the "last man standing". Covid has accelerated the exodus. As you watch all your friends move on, you need a strong will to remain confident staying is the right decision for you.

Man did you express that well Mark. Having few long term friends and knowing that even the long term folks will likely leave at some point is a bit heartbreaking isn't it? I've been here 10 years so far, and while I hope this is the place I die, I know that due to an unforseen circumstance, I could be one of the people who also move on. Mark, I'd love to know your thoughts on how to remain satisfied with life in Thailand. Thank you.

I could stay away from crowds, explore temples in the countryside and work in my garden. I felt better off than if I had returned to the States but…. There are Thai communities all over the British Isles. In the small town we lived in for 3 years when we were in Scotland, my wife quickly met a group of Thai women and had a great, thai style social life with them - food, chat and playing cards at the weekends at our houses. These ladies were a long established group and had contact with other Thais all over the UK. A series featuring these various communities and their lives would be great.

I am 61 years old and have travelled and lived and volunteered in many places throughout the world. What an abundance it has added to my life! I wouldn't change any of it for anything. Often a move or opportunity has come my way and been made fairly suddenly without even realizing what was happening and why I was making the change, but every experience has been filled with both the good and the bad and helped me grow and develop. I see the same happening for you two! If you decide to continue the channel, I think taking us on your journey -- feelings, experiences, things to see there, everyday people and how they live (interviews interspersed) would be of great interest. Maybe think of signing up on patreon to have sponsors etc. All the best!!!!

Hey Serg, thanks. Great meeting you mate. Our paths will cross again buddy until i'll be watching your Thailand journey!
I have lived in Thailand for 36 years arriving in the country at the age of 25 in 1975 as a back packer. It's never ceased to amaze me the number of friends I've met here over the years and if I count them there's only a handful of people who've stayed and made Thailand their permanent home. They come and go. Some leaving with their tails between their legs after loosing all their doe and others just happy to get out because of bad relationships etc. Most foriegners that move here arrive with great plans to retire and live a life of Reilly. Very few make an effort to learn Thai and most find it difficult to live in Thai culture and are constantly complaining about Thailand and trying to change things to the way are back home. They use our logic and common sense that we grew up with and that is something that causes heaps of problems for them living here. Good luck in your new life and hope it works out in Ireland.

Subscriber here saying thanks much for sharing life in Thailand through your interviews. You are so young! So much ahead...and maybe partly show Ireland what you learned about life and love in Thailand that the world needs to know...✌️
All the best to you both Pete and Noon. Don’t say you wont be back. I went back to Canada and ended up back after 2 years. You will be back mate and I will have a Guinness waiting for you when you are here😊

haha love it, stop in Dublin sometime on your next trip back to Canada buddy and I'll take you for the most delicious Guinness of your life
Aww mate, I know that feeling. I left in 2015 due to a terrible drug addiction that had consumed me for many years, and that I had hidden while everyone thought I was "living the dream". I returned to a small market town with a few hundred quid in my back pocket and no idea what I was going to do. Fast forward 7 years and I now have a successful business that allows me to travel back and forth to Thailand for long periods. Keep us updated mate. I really enjoyed your videos. You come across as a naturally good guy, in an industry full of "wannabee hero's and film stars". I'm sure it'll feel strange for a while, but I'm sure you'll find a way, along with your good lady by your side. Would love to see your journey back in Ireland - please do keep us all updated! Good luck mate.

Hi Daniel, that's one hell of a story you got there. Sounds like you could write a book about that. Thanks for the kind words. I'm just a guy from Dublin that loves a good story cheers

Thanks for sharing that ! You ll do well no matter where you are !!!
Whatever comes your way, good luck mate and thanks for the all the great videos you produced 😊
That really came unexpected. I wish you both the best of luck with your fresh start back in Ireland. As for the future of the channel, I'm sure there will be plenty of interesting people to interview in Ireland and the rest of the EU. You could go on weekend trips to Paris, Rome, Prague, etc. to conduct interviews, as you're not going to need a visa within the EU and show Nune a bit more of Europe. Looking forward to the next chapter of your shtory.
I never saw that coming. I wish you both good luck with your future, but I’m going to miss your interviews. The one channel I’m always waiting for new videos.
Pete I wish you guys all the best. You're a great guy and I believe you'll succeed in all your future endeavors. Best of luck 🍀

Wow.....Life is crazy. Once you feel comfortable in one situation, things change either voluntarily or involuntarily. Either way, you guys will be fine. I hope and I'm sure many of us other subscribers hope you continue with your channel. Chok dee!
Stayed in Thailand for 4 years lost my job and moved back to Scotland with my wife. She absolutely loves it especially her job. I love going to Thailand on holiday. Keep the channel going more like pod cast style. I like the way you interview people.

@@thx11138 to be fair them all wearing masks in the airport did kind of make me scream.
Keep it going, document it all, Im sure it will be interesting to see. If Noon has a job thats one of the biggest worries gone. Good luck.
Good luck Pete to you and Noon.I am sure you will be be alright for sure.
Best of luck with the new chapter you are both starting into. My thai wife moved over to Ireland 11 years ago and we've never looked back. She's working in a thai restaurant and has many irish and thai friends. It was a big move but it couldn't have worked out any better. We're just back from a lovely holiday in Thailand and hopefully we will retire there in years to come, but for now Ireland is home sweet home 🇮🇪👍

Great stuff Jay, happy to hear of your wife's success story in Ireland
Pete, you kept me going when I was bored out of my mind in lockdown and counting the days until I could be in Thailand again. The call to adventure is powerful. All the best to you and Nune for your new life in Ireland. I'd love to see content about all the joys and challenges of settling in to your new environment.
