One thing I’ve learned in over 45 years of fishing , color doesn’t matter until it does . You are definitely correct when you say a subtle change can sometimes be the difference

There are days when I found it to be the case. Just like line selection can have a subtle impact on presentation to the point where they'll only take straight mono over braid-to-leader (I've had this happen), colour and especially flash/fleck can sometimes be the difference between a good and bad day. The difficulty is when the right colours change from day to day or season to season. 😕 It's the fun of trial and error I suppose.

Another excellent topic. In my experience, the more pressured the bass the more the size of lure, color, presentation matters. If you're already finesse fishing with a drop shot then everything matters. That's why I love prespawn fishing. The bass haven't seen any lures all winter so their guard is down. They are more likely to strike anything even if the size and color looks suspect.

I have been painting fishing lures (just for fun) with an airbrush for a while now and have painted some really beautiful lures. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to actually fish with any of them yet, so I don't know if my beautiful colors will catch a fish, but one thing is certain. Pretty colors and patterns catch fishermen. My instinct, past fishing experience, and my bloated ego all tell me I have some fish-slaying lures. The fish may have some other opinion. One of these days, perhaps next Springtime, I will be able to test a few of them on stripers in Suisun Bay.

Color matters every minute of the day, it's not so much the color , it's what stands out the best in different light and water color. Contrast is the key, especially in deeper water.

Yep having the right colour 100% makes the difference! So many times watching a fish on active target follow a lure but not committing to eat. Then changing up colours and instantly getting the bites… you can see the behaviour of the fish changes
