AMD lost competitiveness with Intel because the company culture and focus was wrong, they got back to where they are now by changing the culture. Intel seem to be unwilling to change. They hired Jim Keller and he obviously couldn't get any buy-in from the management there and so left.

I find a lot of other engineers like myself would rather have a stable paycheck and less responsibility (to managing finances, etc) especially if they have a family to feed. I don't know how it would be for a hardware developer, but a startup business has to compete with Intel and AMD depending on what they're doing with that new business. Mechanical engineers usually end up doing something like consulting or they have already made a product before and want to produce more because they've found a market for it without much competition.

If i were to rip apart my lenovo desktop, I would go AMD as the replacement as I heard nothing but good things about their stuff. If i had the cash to do it, i would go that route myself. Of course I would look at benchmarks and stuff before buying to get the lay of the land and look at prices to see what I can afford. Like what motherboard series I would have to go for (I know I would go with the B series) and stuff. I could build a pretty nice system for a good price that offers a very good amount of gaming performance.

Intel is like if Toyota sold the 'Corolla 5' for $5000, with a physical bolt punched into the gearbox which prevented you from putting the car into 5th gear. Then they also sell the Corolla *5K* with the bolt removed, for $6,000 - BUT if you break down and have driven in 5th gear at any time regardless of what gear you were in when the car broke down, they won't repair the car because you didn't buy the '5th gear insurance'. I guess they're using the 'Apple business model' of shitting on their customers' faces and charging a fee for the privilege.

*"The more enthusiasts that you piss off, the more likely it is that they're gonna recommend a competing product to family and friends"* This is very true. I've helped pick parts for a dozen PC:s for family and friends, and have to at least some extent helped to build/upgrade 5-6 of them. I've also been involved in helping non-tech friends purchase laptops, tablets, and phones, as spec sheets can be hard to read for someone who isn't as invested in tech as us enthusiasts. Basically, I've been directly involved with the selection of the parts picked for all of these builds and make recommendations based on the friends' needs, budget, and in general of how the market and looks, regarding pricing features and whatnot. If I don't like a brand, I won't suggest using it, and it really is as simple as that. Pissing off the enthusiasts can have quite a huge effect, as other people rely on us.

I've been building with Intel my entire teenage and adult life, since the late 90's. My next build is going to have an AMD chip in it. Intel has been dropping the ball so many times, in so many ways. And still expecting me to pay the intel premium for it. No thanks, I'll go with the manufacturer that doesn't artificially lock down features of mid-tier products to drive enthusiasts into the higher-priced stuff. And don't get me wrong, every chip I've ever bought from Intel has been high-end, but slapping your mid-tier customers in the face is something you've done too often, for too long. So long, Intel. It's been a ride.

The last time AMD was beating Intel, building with Intel wasn't stupid as what you lost could easily made up for with what you gained. Now, with single core performance difference so razor thin and multi core performance so clearly going to one team...add in all the stuff that AMD just lets you do with any of their cpus, no special chipset needed...then cap it off with the fact that many game developers (where Intel was holding onto a tiny performance edge) are starting to lean into multi core usage like never before because it's so readily available. All I can say is that I get why AMD now holds 50% of the enthusiast market and if it were not for systems built pre Ryzen still in use, it would look much worse than it does.

At no point during the purchase process does Intel ask for proof of purchase, processor serial number or anything. So if you do manage to kill an Intel CPU, all you have to do is buy the OC insurance after the fact and wait a few days to claim on it.

That company started to do bastardly things to customers for last decade, and don't deserve to be supported anymore. I hope capitalistic rules will eliminate them. Sean O'Connell Heated seats are not included in the rear on the Standard Range Plus Model 3. They are there but they are not turned on for the rear (basically on-disc DLC). However you get a cheaper up front price as a result, so not really a middle-finger to the consumer who does their homework, more of a manufacturing/cost efficiency.

Us SR+ owners actually couldn't even enable the rear heated seats until later. It was actually a nice offer to give us the option to pay for them. Tesla listened to the request and gave us a solution, actually the opposite of Intel.

baron_xd : Not necessarily, as there are more things that go into the entire manufacturing cost of a car besides the cost of materials. There are manufacturing efficiencies and labor costs that are factored into the ultimate price point of the vehicle and in this instance, Tesla has determined that it is cheaper to just install the same part in every car instead of retooling/shuffling around parts on the assembly line or making an entirely separate part just to not include this feature. They likely don’t even have a back seat part manufactured without the heating coils because it just wasn’t worth it to design/manufacture, so it’s much more worth it to offer it later and likely recoup some of that cost in a future sale over the money that would have been saved on those materials in the first place.

Another pro AMD argument: They include the *whole* featureset they can offer (instruction sets, AVX, virtualisation etc.) across their entire CPU product range. From entry level up to top tier.

@@piotrd.4850 Yeah, that's fair to say. Intel kills boosts with AVX-512 (stock speeds only IIRC) which can nuke performance and if you're doing AVX-512 computing perhaps your needs are beyond an i3 anyway. Especially with AMD implemeting AVX-256 as 2*AVX and taking 2* the clock, 512 just seems useless.

@@p5eudo883 Same, I have a 9900K but my next CPU will definitely be AMD. I was already on the fence between Ryzen and the 9900K when I bought it and just barely leaned more towards the i9. I've been an Intel fanboy for life, every CPU I've ever owned has been Intel; from my old Core 2 Duo, to the Q6600, to the i5-2500K, to the i7-7700K, to my current 9900K. But next time I won't be on the fence.
