Clarence "the Big Man" Clemmons sax is prominent in every Springsteen song. I've seen them many times and had the chance to hang out with them too. Everyone in the band was really down to earth, well "Little" Steven VanZandt was kind of a prick though.

OK So i have been to many Springsteen concerts and I can tell you there is nothing like it. The showmanship, the passion, the incredible skill of the E Street band, the crowd 's in depth knowledge of his catalog makes for the most incredible concert experience you can possibly imagine. I think Springsteen is the Best front man ever. Certainly the top three along side MICk Jagger and Freddie Mercury. Jon Stewart said it is as if Bobby Dylan and James Brown has a baby, It's the combination of his brilliant lyrics and his everyman vibes, that has captured fans for more than 50 years. The core E Steet Band has 10 members. But the Tour Band has both a horn section and 4 backing vocalists. His Grand theme is really a question; Why are the promises of the American dream so desirable yet so elusive? Born to Run's "Chasing a runaway American Dream". hits hard... but so do songs like "The Promised Land", "Darkness on the Edge of Town", "Land of Hope and Dreams", "American Land", "Rocky Ground", 'Youngstown". :My Hometown", "Long Way Home", "Born in the USA", and even "Dancing in the Dark" and "The River" the list goes on and on. For Bruce its all about the "Now" and the "Not Yet". Substance and Shadow. And the Tension between the two. It's about holding hope and faith that the promises made are real and attainable even if life knocks you around. In my view, Bruce is best heard in the live concert setting and in and arena rather than a stadium or festival. I will let other choose their favorite Bruce live performance but for me it's the epic Tenth Avenue Freeze out live in New York City.

Phil & Sam One of my friends have met Bruce at a local bar in Florida. He told me about a month ago that he was drinking his beer, he noticed older gentleman sitting near him. My friend told me that he recognized him. My friend looked at him, and man noticed him looking, then stated, "say it" My friend, "Born in USA?" Man stated, "that's me!" It was Bruce Springsteen sitting next to my friend. My friend and Bruce talked about 20 minutes before Bruce left the bar. Come to find out that Bruce lives about hour drive from that local bar. My friend stated that all bar staff stated Bruce is a regular customer visits that bar. I think that Bruce is a regular working man made it big and knows regular patrons treats him like a regular guy not a celebrity.

I had to do a project (while working on my Architecture Degree) with a song at around 10 minutes or longer, we designed the sets/stages for the story in the song. I used Jungleland! We did a slide show of our designs while the song played, for our presentation. I was a few years older than my classmates at the time and had seen Bruce in some bars in New Jersey while I was stationed at Fort Monmouth and in a concert in Indianapolis during 79-80 school year. My Classmates were 4-5 years younger than me and most have never heard the song before and in fact the majority didn't know who Springsteen was. This was the early 80's. They definitely knew a few years later when his Born in the USA album came out. Born to Run is still my favorite Springsteen Album

ANTHEMIC. Born to Run was a MASSIVE HIT, and its his signature song (among so many). This single and album put Springsteen on the COVERS of both Time and Newsweek magazines in 1975 in the same week! Those were news magazines reserved for politics and current events usually. His E Street Band was just a group of neighborhood guys from the Asbury Park NJ area, including the great Clarence Clemons (RIP) on saxophone, and his long time co-guitarist Steven Van Zandt. He is the epitome of the blue collar rock and roller, greatly influenced by 50s and early 60s rock and roll and garage rock, but also folk singers like Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan. Many of his early songs were about the pursuit of the American Dream, breaking out of your dead end life and getting out to explore all possibilities, pursuing the dream. Faith, Hope, Work, Dreams, Effort, the Road, the Promise are all big concepts in Bruce's songs. He's the genuine article. He and the E Street Band were legendary live concert performers. 4 hour concerts were the norm. He would wear the concert crowd to exhaustion with his energy. The shows were emotional rock and roll celebrations, almost like old time revivals. He was one of the greatest live performers EVER. I saw him over 20 times. Many especially from the NYC/NJ/Philly area will tell you that they saw him hundreds of times live. They were the ultimate bar band at your favorite neighborhood bar. I would suggest TENTH AVE FREEZEOUT, THUNDER ROAD,AND THEN JUNGLELAND from this same album.

It always amazes me how we remember things like music. Given, this is one of the iconic songs of all time ranking in the top 500 songs ever no matter what list you look at. But it wasn’t a massive hit. It only made it to number 23 on Billboard hot 100 and only on the charts for 11 weeks before fading off the charts. It was only his 18th most successful single. But don’t get me wrong. I love this song! They play it as the horses come onto the track for the Haskell horse race in July at Monmouth Park to a rousing reception by the fans in attendance that bring chills to me every time I hear it

@truckrboat I never paid attention to the charts, especially when I was 15 when this came out. It was all over the radio, and having seen the band live 20+ times, it was always either one of the last songs of the set, or an encore song. I doubt anyone would argue that its not one of Bruce's most iconic or signature songs. That was the point. Singing along with Born to Run played live over 20 times with the entire crowd standing, fists in the air on the refrain etc, is one of my treasured concert memories. Add>And oh, btw Rolling Stone ranked BTR its #21 greatest song of all time of 500. Not just for 1 year>>all time. I'll go with that accolade.

Bruce Springsteen, the American Bard. This is the song that introduced him the world in 1975. He made the covers of both Time and Newsweek in the same week, something VERY rare (I had copies of both; I could kick myself for selling them years ago), and suddenly this song was everywhere. And what an introduction - a grand, tortured opera of the streets, wailing and begging and storming through the night. The voice of the common man, with common sorrows and common dreams. No one else did it like Bruce, or ever has since, though some have tried and some have come close. But nobody else has his combination of longing, dissillusionment, and dark, dark hope - and of course, nobody else had Clarence Clemons. (I was 14 when this came out, and it blew my ltitle mind. O_o) P.S. "Thunder Road" would be the perfect follow up. Hands down, the most romantic song I know. Rock and roll passion in a tricked-out Chevy. :)

When working on the "Born to Run" album, Bruce was looking for a very specific "wall of sound" a la Phil Spector. The process took many months and many, many takes. His following album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town", was far less produced and more guitar forward with manY feeling it was his best album. The "Born to Run" album, sans the title track, introduced what would become the classic E Street Band. There have been additions to the band (Nils, and unofficially Soozie, Patti, Jake, etc.) and two major losses (Clarence and Danny). I've seen them at least 30 times with their shortest show being around 2 1/2 hours and longest 4 hours. It's a true experience seeing them live.

The NJ State Assembly passed a bill in 1980 naming it the state song. The bill didn't pass in the state senate when it was realized the song was about running away from New Jersey. The Senate said no, alarmed by Jersey-negative lyrics that they couldn’t imagine people warbling at state fairs: “...this town rips the bones from your back/It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap/We gotta get out while we’re young.”

Back then, in his prime, few could match his energy. One of the best live shows ever. When this album was released, in 1975, I was 16, and very much a music fan, listening to my growing album collection, plus FM rock radio, WMMS in Cleveland, specifically. WMMS was a major influence behind a number of acts who became big, spreading throughout the midwest and eventually elsewhere, including Rush and David Bowie. I remember listening to WMMS the night (probably a Friday or Saturday) they debuted this album. The DJ couldn't say enough positive things about it, saying if it wasn't album of the year, he didn't know what could beat it. He was right.

This song dates back to a time when a lot of old Rust Belt towns had started to die, and the people there had begun to lose hope for the future. Any kid who could leave did so, and the rest slowly gave in to despair. It was a harbinger of what would happen throughout the country, as the 20th Century drew to a close. Artists sometimes perceive things sooner -- and more clearly -- than anyone else. This perception comes through the most clearly if you listen to an entire album, which Springsteen recorded on what he called the "four corners" pattern. The first song on each side is powerful and uplifting, and reflect the aspirations of youth. However, as the side progresses, the songs grow darker and reflect how life slowly grinds away at hopes and dreams. The last song on each side is a paen of despair, as hope is lost to life's harsh demands and moral compromises. The early songs celebrate; the last songs mourn. Listen to "The River." The insight is shattering.

He'd rehearse his upcoming tour, record songs for his next album, shoot videos, and play Concerts at night, packing the arena to the Rafters everynight. He could play the Meadowlands everynight for years, and it would always be a Full House...Bruce is Beloved in NJ...

When the Big Man died ( Clarence Clemons the sax player ) died Bruce said it was like rain would never fall again he loved him so much. His untimely passing really hurt Bruce.

This song was released in 1975, but was at least a year older than that. That makes it 50 this year. So hard to believe.

I really enjoyed seeing understand the lyrics before the concert video on this song. Some mv are so iconic (Sledgehammer) or distracting (Everlong) or concert footage that is memorizing (Stairway To Heaven MSG and Born To Run) that you lose the lyrics on the first run. Everyone will comment on the band & saxophonist here - now when you watch the video it will mean more. For most songs, that's ok! Because we have heard a song a hundred times & know the lyrics and every detail of the composition & instrumentationn so we are to the point where we want you to see the exciting mv or concert footage forgetting that... we know all the before mentioned 🙈 You are doing great. I appreciate how much effort you put into truly learning about the music, artist, and trusting us.

The band has its own life in television history. Drummer Max Weinberg was the band leader for the old Conan O'Brien talk show (Late Night and the Tonight Show), and, most notably, Little Steven VanZant was Tony Soprano's consigliere Silvio Dante, among other roles (Lilihammer, etc). And the Big Man, Clarence Clemons, is the reason the sax is so prominent in the Bruce and E Street work...he is Bruce's consigliere, so to speak. In 10th Avenue Freezeout, he notes how things changed when the big man joined the band, noting the character Bad Scooter (B.S., Bruce Springsteen) and the big man working together in the lyric "i'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh / when Scooter and the Big Man bust the city in half.".....

RIP Danny Federici "The Phantom" and Clarence Clemons "The Big Man". The studio version of Born to Run has a drummer who played on only one Springsteen song: Ernest "Boom" Carter. Early albums had Vinnie "Mad Dog" Lopez on drums and later ones had "Mighty" Max Weinberg.

He did have a very tight band, they were all masters of they're instruments. And he was a master of putting a thousand words in one song. He is a genuine caring person, always for the right cause. And Born to run was by far the best album that he ever created. You can put it up against the best albums ever. A master class musician, and human.

Bruce Springsteen of the Raspberries "They are THE greatest underrated power pop masters". Eric Carmen, frontman of The Raspberries, and songwriter of All By Myself, Never Gonna Fall In Love Again, Hey Deanie, That's Rock N Roll, and Make Me Lose Control dies at age 74. Also popular for his song Hungrey Eyes from the movie Dirty Dancing. It would great to hear a tribute reaction to Eric's album version All By Myself...a song he took to #1 in the 70's and Celine Dion again in 1996.

This was song that really put him on the map in 1975. In October of that year, he was on the cover--IN THE SAME WEEK--of what were then the two biggest American news magazines, Time and Newsweek. Predictably, all the older columnists who'd never heard of him completely flipped out about this "nobody" getting such recognition. Nearly 50 years later, it's clear that the magazines made some astute choices.

"The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive!" One of the most epic songs in history - and my favorite. The musicianship, the raw power and energy, the lyrical imagery, and of course, the girl, Wendy, make us want to know "if love is wild and if love is real". While I like Bruce's later work nothing, I think, matches this masterpiece.

I hope you enjoyed the song. The live version of Born to Run will equal the energy level of Rosalita. Jungleland definitely has a different sound. Shows his story telling, painting a picture as the song progresses. Plus as mentioned by others, Jungleland features an almost 3 minute instrumental dance between the sax and piano. With Clarence leading the dance with his sax. Supposedly, that musical interlude took 16 hours to record.

two great springsteen covers are REALLY worth checking out, last year, aged 75 he covered the comodors classic "Nightshift" and a live concert clip from 2012 live in Liepzig (germany) a chuck berry cover of "you never can tell. both show him at his best in later years to compare. Love all your reactions so pleased to have found this channel.

Greatest show of all time. Bruce would come out deliver 3 hours of intensity and come back and do another hour. He always acts like he can not believe that all these people are here to see him. If you want thoughtful Bruce react to The River. Make sure you use the 1975 live version where he prefaces the song with the story of his father. He later included it in a Broadway show

That sax was the one and only Clarence Clemens (RIP). Probably his best solo is on Jungle Land. I think that’s on the album, Greetings From Asbury Park, New Jersey. Everything on that album is gold. He’s also featured on Santa Clause Is Coming To Town, a rare rock Christmas song. You’ll love it. 🥰 ❤

Bruce wrote great "car" songs, never had a car! Bruce wrote great "blue collar" working man songs, never had a job! In his broadway show he explains "that's just how good I was" with a wink and a smile. And he wrote " When the change was made uptown, And the Big Man joined the band" about Clarence Clemons. Magical time in music history.

The man has literally hundreds of absolute bangers. There are no bad songs on maybe his first 6 or 7 albums. You might want to switch it up and try something from Nebraska next. An extremely influential album. This one was produced using Phil Spector's "wall of sound" technique, which creates that effect of there being so many instruments. It's basically Bruce's guitar, drums, bass, and sax.

Jungleland. I’ll add to the “must hear!” Chorus: “Jungleland.” His masterpiece, the last song on this (Born to Run) album. It’s on another level, great as the current level is. His rawest, most powerful is “Atlantic City.” Studio and live versions are all great. Thanks Phil and Sam!
