Does Axle to Axle length REALLY affect accuracy?

Спорт

Does ATA really matter?? In this segment I walk you through how the measurements or "specs" of a bow can affect the accuracy. Axle length seems to be asked about frequently but there's much more to it than just that measurement. I've had short bows perform as good as any longer target style bow I've used but there's some key factors you should know about.

I have three young sons and Would love to see a video or post about youth bow options and your opinion on starting them out with good shooting habits. Which release to start with etc. And just how to guide them successfully to enjoy archery. Love the content and thanks for all you do for the sport!

I'm 5' 11" and I've owned both short and longer bows. I personally feel I hold better on target with bows over 30" axle to axel

Thank you for this video. It's good to learn how the large cams increase the forgiveness of what I would have perceived as a rather unforgiving ATA.

Perfect timing on this video Dud! I’m going back to a longer axle to axle bow due to string angle and shooting comfort. I’m a big guy with a long draw. No real problems with accuracy on my first few arrows, just comfort and repeatability for me.

For me personally, it's (was - see below) the angle of the string and "fit" of that angle to my face, as you mentioned. I never could get my natural head placement on a short axle to axle bow at full draw. Being into archery for near 40 years, I know if it's not comfortable it's not going to be consistent. Always go for a bow/release/ect that "feels" comfortable to you. It's been 20 years since I tried anything under 36" or so axle spacing, I just rule them out from previous experiences. It's interesting to me to hear they have improved that with new larger cams and other design changes. I may have to check out some of the shorter bows next time I go to a bow shop.

Same age same issue, shooting a 29 ata for a year and a half now and my anchor just feels unnatural, have to tilt my head to find peep, very uncomfortable

You should be the one selling bows. I had to go trough 2 bows to discover what was ideal axle to axle for me. Currently I am at 32 inch axle to axle and when I first stated I was at 30 inches and I had to tilt my head in order to see trough the peep . After moving to 32 inches my archery experience change I shoot in natural position no head tilt and the only thing that limits my accuracy is the ability to see the target and level of fatigue.

Can confirm Dudley is correct. I just bought a PSE Mach 30. was in the market for 33 ATA bow and this one fit me better than most of the 33’s with my 28 inch draw. It’s a spicy fast little bow that holds great. I’m sure I could get better accuracy with a 40 inch target bow but I’m trying to hunt. The benefit of my short draw length is getting to comfortably use these lighter smaller bows - so why not cash in?

The longer bows still rule target archery. They shoot better for me as well, especially hunting. It would be interesting to do a real world in-field test with a lot of different shooters.

What's your thoughts on more or less Reflex on a compound bow, I'm seeing it on a lot more reviews now...

Could you also discuss bows in spec vs. out of spec.? I recently switched strings and ended up losing fps of 3-4 fps. I was told that the bow was not in spec., from the manufacturer and that most manufacturers ship bows “out of spec” in order to make spec? For example, adding in extra twists in their stock string to hit 70lb., adjusting axle to axle or brace height??? I’ve been told that some manufacturers are worse than others for doing this???

I traded my bowtech carbon icon in for a bowtech ss34. I went from 30.5” ATA to 34”.. the longer bow holds so much nicer.

So I have a 40” and my draw length is set to 32.5 and I feel like the angles may be a bit steep, it seems like I have to lower my head to touch my nose, now what…. 🤓

What about the point that a bow with a shorter brace height accelerates the arrow over a longer period of time and therefore stays in the bow longer -> more time for unwanted bow movement ?

Question is, nowadays, what is considered long or short axle to axle? I’m looking at a 33” ata thinking it’s huge compared to the 29” I presently shoot. 28.5 in draw and the difference in string angle is very noticeable to me, have to tilt my head pretty good to find the peep on the 29.

A larger bow can allow you to have more weight at the extremities for the same overall weight which will resist movement in 2x axis. But i find it negligible.

say it louder, so all the haters of the longer ata bows in bow hunter class hear you. Us guys with longer draws are affected by the shorter bows today. When I first started hunting, 48" ata was the norm. Today I hunt with 38-40" ata and compete with them. As I sit in a stand with my 68" longbow, I have to laugh when guys claim anything over 34 ata is too long to hunt with.

Did he just do a whole video talking about how shorter bows of today, are equally as forgiving as longer bows from 20 years ago!? What about new longer bows, with the same tech as the new shorter bows. Can we compare apples to apples instead of this asinine comparison.

I believe he was answering where short ata are today, compared to where they were 20 years ago, he wasn't comparing to longer ata bows. i think you missed that.

@@troybengel691 the title of the video is “does axle to axle really affect accuracy”. And he starts by holding a new supra x 40 and then says “I’ve shot equally well with both extremes” He’s misleading people to think that a 30” bow will be just as “accurate” (forgiving) as a 40” target bow. I’m not saying you can’t be accurate with a shorter bow. But the simple fact is, if you want a bow that’s going to be as stable to aim as possible, a longer, less reflex design WILL be better. If pse came to Dudley and said “hey, we want you to shoot vegas next year and really try to win” I GUARANTEE he would be shooting a supra x 40.
