In this video I show step-by-step how to service your ZF 8HP70 8-Speed Automatic transmission in your Dodge RAM.
This is claimed to be a "lifetime" fluid but a quick search will show you that many other companies such as BMW use this transmission as well and do regular oil change services just like any other transmission.
ZF, the manufacture of this transmission recommends that oil changes be done as early as 80,000 km and 120,000 km, or 8 years, depending on the load. This should be done sooner if more rigorous duty (towing, aggressive driving, etc).
Straight from ZF the manufacturer of the transmission
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
www.zf.com/global/media/medie...
5-, 6-, 8- and 9-speed as well as 4HP20 automatic transmissions: ZF 5-, 6-, 8- and 9-speed as well as the ZF 4HP20 automatic transmissions are filled maintenance-free with specially developed partially synthetic ATF oils. Maintenance-free fills are intended for normal operating conditions. Especially driving at very high operating temperatures can result in accelerated aging or increased wear of ATF oils. It is recommended, in the event of severe operating conditions, such as:
- frequent highway driving in top speed range
- offensive, sporty driving style
- frequent trailer operation, being above average
oil purification (oil change) on automatic transmissions is recommended between 80,000 km and 120,000 km, or 8 years, depending on the load. In each case, only released ATF oil may be used for oil changes. And oil changes must be performed in accordance with the relevant specifications.

You must disable your traction control before installing new fluid. After you change out the transmission pan and filter the transmission needs to be below 86°F when you first start installing your transmission fluid and tires must be off the ground and truck must be level. Add transmission fluid until it starts to dribble out then put drain plug back in. With brakes applied place transmission in reverse and hold for five seconds, place the transmission in drive and hold for five seconds, release the break slowly and accelerate to second gear and hold for five seconds, apply the brakes and place the transmission in neutral, raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM for five seconds, return engine to idle and place transmission in park, remove fill plug and fill transmission until fluid dribbles out and then install drain plug. All these steps need to happen before the transmission reaches 122°F. If you go past 122° the transmission fluid will start to expand and you will not get a proper fill. !!!

I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos; excellent, excellent work! I completed this task on a 2015 RAM 1500 Lonestar I recently picked up with the ZF8HP70 transmission (91,000 miles... no transmission fluid change). Having experience with some domestics (Corvettes) and some foreign (Mercs and BMWs) marques, the "sealed" transmission was familiar as is the process of changing the fluid, but this video helped tremendously! After some research, I decided to use Redline D6 ATF - I highly recommend this as an alternate!

Just came from your vid for spark plug change to YOUR hemi with a boost of confidence now! I have the '09 Hemi Durango which is a totally different setup than here, but wanted to share the method I did for my transmission draining to avoid the potential fluid mess: Purchase a cheap plastic under-bed storage bin with wheels from walmart, drape the thicker quality plastic roll sheeting over it making a well with extra sheeting overlapping the sides for the floor to contain any splash. It held the fluid beautifully. When ready, roll the bin out carefully, make a pouch and lift out. With a helper just poke a hole and drain into whatever oil drain jug/pan you normally use for disposal. The bin never saw a drop on it. Excellent DIY vid's - SO appreciated. Cheers!!

I have a '15 Charger RT with the ZF 8HP70 trans and it seems you may have left out something that could affect the correct filling procedure, namely physically accelerating the car while it is off the ground. This is the fill procedure direct from the FCA oem factory service manual that I bought: 1.Raise and support the vehicle on a level hoist (Refer to 04 - Vehicle Quick Reference/Hoisting - Standard Procedure) . 2.Start the engine. The engine must continue to run for the entire test 3.Using a scan tool or the vehicle information center, verify that the transmission fluid temperature is below 30°C (86°F). 4.Remove the transmission fill plug from the right rear of the transmission case. 5.Add transmission fluid until it trickles from the fill opening. 6.Install the transmission fill plug and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) . 7.Lower the vehicle for access to inside of the vehicle, leaving the tires at least 8 inches off the ground. 8.With the brakes applied, place the transmission in Reverse and hold for 5 seconds. 9.Place the transmission in Drive and hold for 5 seconds. 10.Release the brakes, slowly accelerate to 2nd gear and hold for 5 seconds. 11.Apply the brakes and place the transmission in Neutral. 12.Raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM for 5 seconds. 13.Return the engine to idle and place the transmission in Park. NOTE: A full transmission will have fluid at the fill hole with the transmission between 30°C (86°F) and 50°C (122°F). Do not over fill. 14.Remove the transmission fill plug and allow excess fluid to drain from fill hole or add fluid as necessary. 15.Install the transmission fill plug and tighten to the proper (Torque Specifications) . 16.Using a scan tool, clear any DTCs. The driving the car may be there to be sure that there is proper oil circulation occuring in the torque converter. When i drove the car on the jack stands, a warning light happened for the traction control which is likely related to the DTC's mentioned in step 16 I also believe that it is important to measure what comes out when you drain as a reference so that you do not overfill..

Paul Andre There's a video about this as well. It also mentioned that an engineer from ZF talked about a temperature bypass valve that sends fluid to the condenser for cooling after it reaches 160 degrees F. So it doesn't completely circulate the fluid until after this temperature is attained. In other words you could have air in the system or not have the proper amount of transmission fluid if this step is left out. It's pretty much a two day job. Just stating what I did my own research on, not an expert in any way.

Just an fyi...from ZF themselves the step of taking the vehicle off the ground is not necessary or even recommended. They have very clear instructions on their website as well. The ZF8 is used in many many different makes of vehicles these days. Not sure why Fiat added the step of driving with wheels off the ground but it is not necessary.

@@MrLatinKing13 This gentleman is right I have not see on the comments yet anybody mentioned this if you do a deep dive from ZF It's not quite this simple. There will be the fluid stuck, As you mentioned there's a few videos out thone I've seen from Z from ZF I've also seen one From basically a shop teacher at a University who talks about ZF Directly recommending How to do it to get that extra oil out it's basically a 2 day process, To do it right. Or you're gonna have approximately 30 to 40% of old fluid Mix them with the new fluid.

Good to see the transmission didn't produce too much in the way of filings and that the fluid appeared to be in decent shape upon inspection. Something about this AT fluid is so different that maybe conventional wisdom (regular maintenance) does not fully apply. One Last thing Thanks for checking out the video hope it helped! I'm not going to bother with extra filters to be honest. The fluid was pretty damn clean after about 90k miles so the stock filter seems to be doing its job. I would be a bit hesitant adding additional inline filters as it could alter the oil pressure for the trans if it causes any restriction but honestly I think it's overkill... The replaceable ATP filter is only about $30 so it can be changed for relatively cheap if you were ever worried. Thanks again for stopping by and check back for more videos! 👍🏼

Nice video, so you have to get transmission up to temp before dumping the fluid as well? Then once pan is replaced fill with as much as it allows before it starts flowing out? Has anyone made a full flush video yet? On GM vehicles i would drain pan, replace filter. Add what i drained. Disconnect atf hose from cooler and run until all the dirty fluid came out then shut off and replace same amount. Then it had full system of clean fluid

Great Video. I have the 2014 also and was about to do the service and glad I watched this first. I like the filter/Pan you used with replaceable filter for future service. The Service Manual from Tech Authority on these trucks is great for knowledge to. Keep the videos coming. Maybe a Oil Filter relocation kit one. Damn Electric power steering pump location makes the oil filter more work by all the prep work to avoid leaking, makes the relocation kit seem like good idea.

Same trans in my ‘17 Durango. Just did this and now it whines while accelerating 🤷‍♂️ I’m gonna check the fluid level again tomorrow when it’s cold and see what happens. Mine took about 3.5 quarts...liters...whatever they call it. ZF’s manual said to do it with the fluid between 30-50 Celsius so that’s about 86-122 Fahrenheit. Will start it and just open the fill plug when it hits 86. I have a feeling it’s somehow overfilled

  • @BoostedMotorsports

I hear ya but it doesn't hurt anything. You actually can't put anything more in since the pan is full and it is coming back out through the fill bolt. Starting the truck gets the pump running and allows you to get the rest on the oil in. As long as its not dry and you aren't driving the truck theres no harm done. Its the only way to refill.

Thanks for this. I thought that in the manual, it calls for the truck to be off the ground (lift or jack on the diff), and to let the transmission shift in drive, from 1st and into 2nd gear. I think you may be short of fluid, as the 2nd gear shift pulls more fluid? Check some other videos. I'd hate to see your trans hurt low on fluid.

Thanks for the video. I have the same atp filter. At first I was hesitant to use it because of less capacity of fluid for the transmission. Since you have used the atp filter have you seen any difference in trans temp? less fluid equals higher trans temps. I tow a lot so that's really important to me. Also where did you get the zf lifeguard 8? I'm currently running amsoil signature series and honestly I wish I hadn't used it. This transmission is very picky. Thanks for making the video good job.

Hey Dylan I have not noticed any difference in operation with the ATP filter. The capacity difference is very very minor. II called ATP to confirm and they said lots of people are running this filter on their RAM. The capacity is only a few hundred ML difference. Search for the fluid on eBay there is a bunch of sellers selling cases of it. That's where I found it. Any other questions feel free to ask!

Hey mate you missed the final step. After checking and topping up 4 times, you also have to drive the vehicle on the road and get the oil at least 160F so the cooler valve open and complete oil circulation completed. Then you need to park the car and wait the oil cool down to 109F or 50C again, run the engine on P again and check the level again. And you are good to go.

Amazing that they say Lifetime on filter/fluid. Your fluid was good looking still. I just dropped one of ours and it only has 100,000 km's (about the same as your miles) on it and the fluid is done. Its black and the magnets have an acceptable amount of ferris material on them. I just started servicing this fleet and I know our older 300's haven't been touched in 300,000 km....yikes.

So what I gather you were only able to put 2.5qts back in and then you started the engine to put more fluid in after that? Looked like initially you didn't drain enough fluid to say you changed anything other than the filter pan. Did I miss something? How much fluid drained out when you dropped the pan?

With two less magnets, yeah, I'd be changing the change-able filter more often myself if I installed this filter body. There's another video of a filter body change on KZread where the magnets (all 4 on the OEM) are coated with metal filings, prob due to heavy hauling duty. The missing magnets are a bigee in that case.
