Man they just used a local anesthetic, had a nurse hold my cheeks open and went at it with a scalpel. Literally the worst thing ever. 5 inches long and 1.5 inches deep. Took 3 years to close up. Had to pack it every day with gauze and go back every few weeks to get the walls scraped down and burned with silver nitrate. If you ever experience a pain in that area and notice any abcesses or protrusions, just go straight to a specialist. Don't wait and let it get worse.

Had it too. 2-3months like you, 1year later it came back and got operation done. Was cut out deep to the bone and big like a golfball. After a week i needet to clean the wound daily with the shower head ontop of dressing n stuff for over 6 months. I hope birth never hits me so hard like that one time some big scabs ripped of and flushed out, almost ko-d me in the tub...

@jasminpafina9884 The worst was definitely the first time I had to remove the gauze. It was all dry packed and no amount of water was making it separate. Had to have my own mother come in and rip it out cause I was shaking too much from pain to get it out myself. Threw up in the toilet after that. My coworkers son had the same thing done and he was fine after. 10 years after the surgery at his wedding some of his best friends decided to give him a little weggie, ripped everything back open. It just never goes away.

Whrn I had been dating my now wife for about a year she had to have the surgery, for a few months after I had to put ointment on it a few times a day and then layer gauze on top and tape it secure. I think it was around that time I knew I would eventually marry her, you can't treat an open wound on someone's ass multiple times a day for months without really realizing how committed you are to that relationship.

Ive actually heard a case of someone going deaf and having brain damage from shoving a q-tip into their ear too far. Plus, you really shouldn't use q-tips anyways. Not deep, I mean. They don't really scoop anything out, they compact stuff into your ear deeper and make blockage (even most boxes tell you not to use them to clean ears). The best way to clean your ears is to just use a tool build for wax digging. Or use the q-tip or tissue to wipe the opening of your ear (kind of like wiping after a number two) :]

I had this problem for about 4 years through all if college, the infection would flare every couple months. When I had the surgery, to hole was too large to be stitched up. The surgeon said it was about the size of his fist. So, it had to heal as an open wound, had to be packed and bandaged everyday. It took close to 4 months to heal closed and since I couldn't sit for months I had to rebuild all of my back muscles that withered away from laying constantly. It took about 7 months to be a fully functioning human again after that surgery. But 4 years later, I'm so glad I did it.

My sister suffered from this. It festered into a giant ball of infection, and she got it twice more after since once you have one youre likely to get it again. Its so immesely painful, and often has to be left open and packed with gauze daily like an open siv in your body. Only once its no longer infected and small enough did they close it. My sister was so miserable, and left with some nerve damage after. They told her it's more likely to happen with low hygeine/low activity (sedentary) lives. Please always take care of your body!!

Generally, if you have a pilonidal cyst, it often becomes abscessed sometime in your late teens to 20s. You can be treated with antibiotics and drainage of the abscess but once this gets infected/abscessed, it is going to be a recurring problem, so generally, a doctor will recommend you see a surgeon for removal of the cyst. Traditionally, this involved an oval-shaped removal of skin and tissue down to the sacrum/coccyx bone and then closure of the wound. this would stop the recurrence. I am unfamiliar with this newer laser treatment, I hope it has good results.

i actually has this. It was infected, so we went to my local Urgent Care and they described it as something to do when the tailbone doesn’t fully connect (which made no sense but go off 💀). I was then referred to a specialist who finished draining it because the cyst popped on it’s own when I discovered it. We went about 5 months of gauze, draining, sterilizing, etc. when it just wouldn’t close on it’s own anymore. I had surgery done back in January this year, I can finally sit down on my rear again :)

My roomate from college had this when we were living together. It started when some very painful lower back pain, her doctor gave her some meds and a sick leave so that she can rest her back. Turns out she had a very bad reaction to the meds, I found her half passed out on the bathroom floor. She had to do without pain medication, the doctor told her that some paracetamol will be enough, and that she could go back to class. The pain worsened, and her doctor started to accuse her of faking it, called her lazy and that she just didn't want to finish her year. After a month she saw another doctor, that spoted right away that it was a cyst. She had two surgery to drain and close it, and it took months to heal. I remember the nights where I had to work on projects or study (because I'm unable to not do things last minute), and her being thrilled that she had some company while she was too in pain to sleep.

Whenever I hear stories of doctors being this stupid it always shocks me how they are even qualified. In med school, we’re always taught to examine the patient’s site of pain thoroughly, and from that alone we can illicit what’s going on. This time of abscess can usually be seen as a bulge from the outside and it would way too painful to touch. I’m guessing her doctor didn’t even examine her properly 🤦🏽‍♂️

Tips to Avoid a Pilonidal Cyst : 1) Never scratch or scratch with minimal force if you feel any itchiness in the butcrack. The scratching could tangle the hair in that region and could get it inside the skin which could lead to this condition. 2) Possibly avoid meat or atleast limit meat. It's know to increase the body temperature which could lead to this condition. A high intake of fruits and veggies is must. 3) Adequate bloodflow in the form of excercise is beneficial as well, as bloodflow could prevent the cyst from getting accumulated. 4) Hygiene is probably the deciding factor if you'd get the condition or not. Poor hygiene could cause the microbacteria to grow in your buttcrack, which could lead to hair being pushed inside. Try to bath everyday and change clothes frequently, especially after workouts. Edit : - 5) A regular application of an antibacterial ointment/gel/cream might be an added advantage, especially in trying to prevent any reoccurrence. Nevertheless I'd strictly suggest the application of the ointment only after an approval of a qualified licenced healthcare practitioner. I strictly won't suggest to go OTC with this suggestion. 6) I'd also suggest to avoid sitting for more than 45 mins -1 hr at a go. Even if it's during travelling or while on a drive, it could always help to stand up and let the buttocks region get adequate blood flow which could dent the process of cyst formation.

First time i did it myself in my bathtub with a box cutter. Smelled like a gorilla took a dump. Second time i couldn't get it to burst so i had to call someone to take me to the nearest doctors office to cut it open and drain it. My next one is going to meet its maker. I am a Type 1 diabetic so i have many finger prick devices laying around my house. I have one set aside with the sharpest, thickest, most painful needles out there. It basically slingshots a half inch long needle into your skin with the press of a button. The second one of those things becomes unbearable, im shooting myself in the ass with a spring loaded death needle.

Over the course of the next 2 weeks the pain in my tail bone kept progressing, but I just thought I had badly bruised it and did my best to ignore it. Then one morning I wake up with my underwear wet with bodily fluids (and not the fun kind) and was forced to stay in bed a let the cyst drain for the next few days. They didn't even realize that she was still conscious and coherent until her blood pressure spiked and she passed out from the pain. She said it was hands down the worst pain she had ever experienced. Okay story time: I developed a pilonidal cyst at 18. These are extremely painful and absolutely go down as the worst medical procedure I have endured. I initially thought I had somehow accidentally broken my tailbone it hurt so bad. Then, at the clinic, it had to be drained which involves cutting the cyst open at the very end of your booty crack. Trust me when I say that local anesthetic doesn't even touch the pain that squeezing on that cyst causes. I was in agony. After all was said and done, I had felt so much pain all at once that my brain was ready to nope out of there. I nearly blacked out. Tunnel vision, going deaf, rapid breathing. The works. But wait, the fun didn't even end there. In most cases, to avoid recurring cysts, they don't close the wound. That lil sac had to continue to drain, which meant that instead of simply healing, the wound would bless this awful stinky puss blood. The best part was that it would scab up, and every time I bent over or sat on the toilet, I'd have to bleed for a bit. But wait, there's more. Before I got the cyst I had landed an interview for my first job. I got the job and then had to show up to my first several shifts with period pads in my undies to help absorb the leakage. They didn't even work well for my issue because the blood would just leak down my crack and dry, chafing my legs, and I had to go to the restroom constantly to break the newly formed scab and drain my puss blood out. I have no idea what the moral is here because the fact that they're ingrown hairs makes it difficult to prevent, but I guess just keep the area clean and hope for the best.

I was informed that mostly only men got this condition, and that I was one of the few unlucky women to get it. It came and went with my period which made things 10 times worse. Imagine having back pain, cramps, tailbone/asshole pain, having it hurt to sit/lay on back, and having to wear a diaper for a week. I just chalked it up to normal period woes until one day it just burst open and I started leaking from a different hole (it was absolutely disgusting). My doctor said that it probably flared up during my periods due to hormones. Luckily for me, the removal wasnt that invasive and there was minimal disfiguration (except for a scar). I was stitched up, and besides a slight stiff feeling when sitting down, and pain when cleaning the stitches, recovery was easy. Didn't even need the pain pills. I remember reading horror stories about the healing process (especially about people who had to be left open) and I thank god every day i didnt have to deal with that 😂

Can still feel a bit sore now and then around my tailbone. I'm just hoping it doesn't happen again because I read they might have to remove that part of the skin.

After two weeks the pain was too much, especially 'cause in that place it hampers your ability to move, so I went to the ER. The surgeon cut it open, drained the blackened puss and tore away the hair. All he used for the pain was some spray ice, the kind athletes use. Easily the worst pain I ever felt in my life, I've been sore for weeks.

I had this once, when I was in my teens. What doctors did back then (this was in the late 90s), was they cut a large hole around the entire affected area, called an "Open Wound Surgery". After the surgery, they will pack the wound with gauze to prevent the surface of the wound healing before the walls of the wound (if that happens, it will fill with pus and other debris and won't heal properly). This gauze will need changed twice daily, the only trick is that this is nearly impossible to do yourself: you need a nurse or family member or spouse to do this for you. With me, it was my mom who did it. Kinda embarrassing, but necessary so eh whatever. It takes about 4 weeks for it to heal shut enough that the gauze is no longer needed, just a covering. Once the wound is healed enough, some type of acid is used to cauterize the remaining wound which will eventually heal, leaving a small-ish scar. EDIT: There's a 3rd way that this is remedied: a surgery called "pit picking" where they excise just the entrances to the sinus, creating several tiny wounds instead of one large wound. The technique shown in this video, I suspect was not known/available back in the 90s, as even pit picking was a relatively new thing that my older surgeon apparently did not know about, or did not practice.

I was regularly getting check ups and having doctors cauterize and pull hairs out for the better part of a year before I gave up and stopped the appointments. The cyst itself has only left me with minor discomfort . What actually hurts is getting it “treated.” Especially if you have a sadist of a doctor like mine who decides to not use any lidocaine.

Brother about that carefully sitting thing. I also feel some discomfort after the surgery and had to adjust my sitting to not put pressure at that area but in my case little discomfort not alot of pain. But also I got a boil or acne or infection even after the surgery(I got it also before surgery and that how i know i have some problem in my back) it gave (that infection thing not cyst ) pain and discomfort and also you mentioned about that tendor thing I have same after surgery and also when I got that infection it got(cyst) bigger and i make myself freak out that i have to get surgery again and i Do not want to so I didn't tell anybody in my house about it. The infection thing happen multiple time after surgery. But as times goes it stop happening. I think what help me Is lifting or exercise and alot of walking. I used to exercise before the surgery and continue after that also. Because as i did alot of squat and deadlift .my glute got bigger and stronger and so does my lower back. So because of that no more crouching or back rounding while sitting or you can say automatically when I sit now it did not put pressure at that area because of sitting position as I get stronger from lifting. As right now when i am writing I touch that area but not feel that tendor thing very much only small thing. And no discomfort at all in daily life also. As I think now maybe the infection or boil thing also happens because of my sitting(even after surgery) and putting pressure at that area continuously over a long period of time. now my sitting not creates any discomfort in that area nor do I feel anything. You can also opt for exercise or lifting as well and see does it help?? You can also ask any questions if you have i will sure give answer.

I have, the exact. Same. Experience. Same thing, but I had the cyst for ~3-4 years and I lost sensation in my tail bone. After seeing a specialist in my Junior year, I was able to get my first surgery, but they let it drain out naturally instead of closing it up. The estimated recovery time was 2 weeks and it came back the next year. I had to get a second surgery in my senior year and instead of letting it drain, they did the exact procedure in this video and a skin graft. It took me a month to heal and I went to school with a dedicated pillow that I had to sit on, it's featured in my year book photos. I at least am forever waved from P.E (or given those classes that accommodate you) since it still rips open if I work out on it. :')

Considering some of these other stories I feel I got off a little light. About 5 years ago I had one of these and it was extremely painful. Sitting was nearly impossible and I only found one position I could sleep in. One day I asked my mum to help me out with it (yes it was very embarrassing). With a sterlised needle she poked a tiny hole in the cyst and it basically starting leaking pus. It took about 5 mins to drain completely and the pus was so foul smelling it made both of us queezy. I then bathed once a day for about a week (and once immediately after being drained) in slightly salted water to help clear the area of any bacteria. Since then it has healed very well but has always a small indent right above my butt. I never want to experience it again and yes we found the hair that caused the problem.

oh i had one of these of few years ago. everyone on my dads side of the family is HIGHLY prone to abscess and it sucks so much because i have joint and immune disabilities as well. the doctors originally said to take baths with salts to try to drain it/bring it to the surface so they could pop it and, sure it worked but that shit was DEEP. and this was before summer marching band started. so i ended up going to the ER, they had to do an emergency drain with me awake, they hit me with 100 micrograms of fentanyl and i could still feel the pain but i was so out of it watching speedruns to try to take my mind off it all. the treatment afterwards? pack it, heal from the inside out and do NOT have it exposed to water during showers.

These are tremendously painful. I was leaking tears from my eyes the first couple days. I assumed it was back pain because there wasn't anything visible when my husband first checked. Then the tiny hole appeared and I went to the ER. I'm not one of those weirdos to suffer in silence because I'm afraid of the doctor. I went in, got it drained, cleaned, and packed. I went to see the general surgeon an hour later and he told me to come back on 2 weeks because he couldn't do anything since it was already opened. When I went back I didn't even have a scar. He said he couldn't do anything because he didn't know where it was and he didn't want to open up and dig around since the surgery was already going to take months to bounce back from. I haven't had a recurrence yet, but I do have an inordinate interest in keeping my buttcrack free of dead skin and any other debris 🤣 The craziest part of this whole incident? My brother who is 3 years older than me had the same issue 3 years before I did.

That's crazy. I had this 2 times (I'm 18 now) and my doctor who is a specialist said that no one truly knows why it happens, but it can have something to do with genetics. There are theories that some people may born with a malformation on the tailbone area that makes a cavity or something like that and makes it easier to hair that fell from the butt/back/even head to build up there, then due the daily movement it slowly starts to penetrate the skin. I read some studies and when they analyzed the hair found inside the cyst, it's mainly head hair

@Gabriel Leão you have low-key blown my mind. Every time I shower I have to fish out my hair😅 Good thing it's long because I do not want to go spelunking! Yea, the surgeon mentioned something about it being a minor birth defect. After I had it taken care of I had a scar tissue tunnel and I was VERY aware of where my tailbone was at all times. After 3 years the scar tissue started breaking up and I don't feel it anymore. I hope you don't get it a 3rd time. I can't even imagine😵‍💫

I had this when i was 15 years old. Started with mild pain and irritation. Pain kept going up high and unbearable. Parents thought i was faking it to skip school. They finally cared when the infection got big enough to look like i have a rabbit's tail. By then, i almost fainted with unbearable pain. Went to emergency. They gave me full body anaesthesia. Opened up the whole thing and let it heal inside out. Doc said the infection was the worst he saw till then and scolded my parents for not bringing in earlier. Couldn't go to school for a month.

Yeah, it’s not uncommon at all. But it’s not exactly the type of problem most people are happy to discuss with their friends and family. I had one when I was 17 and even though I was in pretty bad pain I didn’t tell a soul because I was so embarrassed. One night it drained by itself while I was sleeping - the next morning my bed looked like a murder scene - and thankfully hasn’t recurred since. I’m 38 now and would have no problems going to a doctor to sort it out if it came back, but I couldn’t handle even the thought of getting my asscrack medically examined when I was a teenager😆

This is for real, it happened to me. In high school, I was distracted when taking a seat in art class & missed the small round top chair, falling directly on my tailbone. Extremely painful! I sat silently in the most pain ever & ignored it after. Well, weeks later I developed a cyst directly on my tailbone. Still keeping quiet to my parents about it, the cyst soon popped open and I could see directly into this open cavity! I then had to get surgery at the beginning of that summer. The only option was opening it up and to remove the bad tissue. I then had to lay on my stomach all summer playing N64 games, while day after day, my mother had to replace gauze & clean the open wound. That’s right, it had to heal naturally on it own as the surgeon said to clean it daily. Was terrible & embarrassing to be open ass all summer. So don’t ignore any injuries to your tailbone!!!!😢 I’m fine now all these years later, never had an issue since.

Idk why I decided to plop down in my chair, but I tried to and the hard wood back rest rammed right into my tailbone. Hurt so bad it made me dizzy and I broke out into a hot sweat. Felt bruised for a couple days but went away. That was a decade ago tho.
