Doc Severinsen and the Airmen of Note

Музыка

From a performance during the Airmen of Note's Spring 2011 Tour at the campus of University of Tennessee at Knoxville.
Doc Severisen a long time friend and supporter of the Airmen of Note was in town, and was invited to sit in with the Note. He's still swinging at 83 years old!

Doc Severinsen about Airmen of Note: "They are a great statement for what's good about the United States of America". Ditto for me!!!

saw the man a few years ago when he was like 90 in Baltimore, and enjoyed every minute. It was thanksgiving and he was set to enjoy lasagna at Little Italy. He's certainly a trumpert players trumpet player.

Doc was 83, almost 84 at this performance. Still got the pipes and lips! Played with him back in 1967 when he was our guest soloist at our high school band's spring concert. We trumpet players were just blown away. A great experience.

Doc is awesome. He was (and still is) a tremendous influence on my trumpet playing. I have almost every album he recorded in the late 60's and early 70's.

Stardust will always be a classic, beautifully played. A haunting echo from the past that will live forever of a different era, sadly long gone.

Saw Doc and his group in Evans, GA about a year or so ago, and he was still blowing as strong as ever. If you've never heard it, find his recording w/Tommy Newsom remembering Johnny Carson shortly after his passing when they played "Here's That Rainy Day" together. Still gets me every time.

got to sit in the front row for this concert. Best one i've ever been to. Got to see my idol play his horn and listen to my favorite band. What a night. Also got to play in from of him a couple of months later. Most nervous i've ever been in my life. More nervous than I was my first night of bmt haha

of all my airmen of note lps i've collected over the years, i've never seen a female trpt player in the section. 2nd, of all, I'm guilty of paying close attention to my instrument and finally realize that the other players such as the bone & tenor sax soloist and drummer in particular are phenomenal players as well. thanx for posting these vids. Man i'd like to here tim leahey get featured on a piece as well

junkyman2 Liesl Whitaker is the lead trumpeter in this band. She went on to play lead in the US Army Blues, then the US Army field band. Outstanding lead player who's served our country with swinging and exciting playing!

@@michaelfoxbrass It looks like she has a green uniform on so I think she was actually in the Army and filling in with the Note for this concert or maybe tour.

I never made it to one of the bands but I was in Drum & Bugle (beat and blow) in basic training and tech school. We did have TIs (the AF equivalent of drill sergeants) that specialized in music. No Arban's but we did do lots of Sousa marches. ;) We did one graduation ceremony in tech school were we played Sweet Georgia Brown and I soloed using my trumpet instead of the bugle and I thought for sure the colonel was going to have a stroke.

If you mean the recording, believe it's this arrangement, is on one of the Tonight Show Band albums from the 1980's.
