Doc Severinsen Conn dealers concert - 1980's.

Музыка

The complete concert. Video quality isn't great but the audio is pretty decent. Besides Doc doing a bunch of incredible playing, there are various talented musicians featured.
Ends with one of the most amazing versions of Malaguena of all time.

Doc's tone still shines and sparkles even on a worn out old VHS. Just a very impressive player.

Just unreal. I will never forget the one time I saw him live when I was a youngster. Totally took my breath away. Sadly, I think it won't be long before we lose Doc. He will be 96 years old this year.

This is how it’s done. Sure Maynard is fun and infectious with his joy. But Doc - this is a true virtuoso. Precision and technique to die for. And Just listen to that sound! All the more impressive when you consider that this is an old VHS recording! Imagine how pure it was in PERSON! PS: at 92 he is STILL PLAYING. The endurance may not be what it once was, but the SOUND IS ALL THERE! Long live Doc!

There is only one "Doc". He creates the most amazing sound that has ever come out of a trumpet. I saw him recently...he is in his 80's and can still create that amazing sound. When I saw him do this same concert at the opera house in Seattle in 1975, I was never the same. Bravo, Doc!

Wow that is a great video. Doc is my favorite player ever since I started on trumpet in 1968. In 1969 I saw Maynard for the first time at Brandi’s Wharf in Philly and he scared the shit out me. In summer of 1972 I was playing in the Steel Pier big band in Atlantic City when Doc came to play his show at the pier ballroom right near the diving horse. I walked right back stage and saw Doc doing his warm-up routine and he was in his underwear playing out toward the ocean. I introduced myself and told him I was playing with the house band. At that moment one of his security staff came back and ask Doc if he wanted me ejected. Doc put his hand on my shoulder and said: “Nah he can stay he’s my trumpet brother.” We spent 1/2 hour talking about chops, trumpets and mouthpieces. I told him I was playing a New York Bach. He said he loved the New York Bach’s and his Getzen trumpet had the same specs as the Bach. He asked if he could try mine. So I got my horn and he played it and loved it. He said if I ever wanted to sell it he would like to buy it. I said sure. He introduced me to Snooky Young who played a beautiful engraved gold plated Getzen. Then Introduced me to his drummer Eddie Shaughnessy who gave me a set of his custom drum sticks for my father who was a professional drummer with Barnum Bailey Circus. I watched the entire concert from the wings. This was a 45 year old Doc in total command of his artistry. As we all know the ending of his arrangements are written so it builds up to a crescendo for Doc to hit this insane note. And he never misses. This was the thrill of my life. This July he will be 94. I saw Doc and Maynard live many many times in my life which always gave me the inspiration to continue playing. I wish I could see him .... one more time

I saw Biff Hannon live when he was with Maynard Ferguson. I had no idea he could play like this. He is a damn virtuoso! Could have been a classical pianist.

The first time I worked in a band for Doc was at the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach. Many of the selections on this video were presented at that time. The band was all local musicians with the exception of the of the rhythm section and Snookie Young. I recall that he featured the lady on electric violin and of course "I Can't Get Started". Snookie passed a lot of lead parts around. Doc played great.

Patrick Palumbo Held on Saturday night, May 2, 1981, at the North Side Gym (one of the largest HS basketball gyms in Indiana/nation),, in Elkhart, Indiana. This was a celebration concert sponsored by CG Conn corporation. Their president, Dan Henken, had just bought several brands and brought them all together under the one Conn brand. Elkhart is the home of CG Conn manufacturing (and many other major brands), and their manufacturing had been out of state (and out of country) by the previous owners. This was billed as a “Welcome Home Conn” celebration over the course of several days. I was present at several events. It was a very big deal for the city.

The Edmonton concert was very similar to this one except Doc began that concert with Superman instead of Star Wars. I have yet to see a recording of Doc playing the beginning of the Edmonton concert with Williams Superman.

Are you talking about the thing he's doing at about 58:30 where there's a break in the continuity? I don't think it's a specific song as such, it seems everything from about 44:00 on are various musical tangents woven around Malaguena.

At the end of the bluegrass breakdown song around 40:00, did that ladies violin come apart? I watched it a couple times and couldn't quite figure out what it was that fell to the floor. Looked like a part of her violin. Or maybe it was just a towel that violinists often use?

I know why that would make you quit. If the tonguing wasn’t hard enough watch the fingering of that section. Impossible third valve combinations at super speed. I don’t mean to pick on Maynard but I hear people debating who is better and simply put Maynard couldn’t play this concert. Not enough technical ability, not enough endurance. Maynard made a living playing in 30 second spurts. And Malagueña forget about it. Maynard slurs everything.
