Garrett! I've been watching your channel since the beginning! I've learned SO much. I am an ICU nurse. And I do deal with life and death on a daily basis. BUT I want to just say your advice affects lives! And the way people LIVE. I recently helped some family members with their spaces. Organization, layout, new bedding etc and believe me it is extremely impactful! My mom had an oversized bedroom set she got many years ago. She started saying she wanted to just put her mattress on the floor because her bed was so high it made it difficult to get in and out of it. I started sending her platform beds on Amazon to see what she liked. It was about $160 and I was able to gift it to her and help her redo her entire layout. We went to IKEA and picked out new bedding. And it was not super expensive. But the IMPACT on her mental health and comfort has been massive. The layout is more functional. Everything is organized and we donated a ton of stuff. Her room is cozier and more comfortable. We got some affordable dimmable lighting. She is so happy and I feel having a dysfunctional and uncomfortable space that you spend so much time in can be draining to your spirits. So just know that interior design and all your advice is super important to people's daily lives. Especially someone who just doesn't have a clue of where to start. Spring cleaning and taking truck loads of stuff from my home and my families homes to the donation centers has been revitalizing! You're one of my favorite channels because all of your tips are universal and everyone can pick up something to apply to their homes. Keep it up!

@@Hmy8799 I also have ADHD lol Best piece of advice I ever got was from my MIL about 30 years ago. For Christmas she bought me a large laundry basket full of cleaning supplies and rags and an egg timer. She said anything you need is in the basket, anything that needs to leave the room go into the basket. Set your timer for 15 mins and clean what you can in every room every day. You are not allowed to leave for 15 mins. If you do this your home will always stay neat and tidy. She was right and it has!

"Won't save someone's life" - that's the mystery though isn't it? Sometimes we bring something to another's life without ever knowing the impact we had. Speaking personally, there were days when undertaking the design and decorating my little corner gave me the wind I needed in my sails to look forward to another day.

Just ignore the haters and trolls! Let them go to another channel! lol! I’m 65 and just now following a few channels focusing on interior design…. Through the years I have collected so many collections such as Jasperware, Waterford, Blenco, Blue and White and more… I change things out which keeps my home always having character… your channel helps me make those changes! I wish there was a little more focus on more of the traditions…. But you’re absolutely right perfect! Stay on your path!

You are very correct. A degreed program in interior design is not easy. There are some quite difficult classes especially when you get to the technical and mathematical elements. It’s certainly much more than giving your personal opinions on design or picking out pretty things. I can’t imagine doing this without formal training or at least a substantial apprenticeship under a formally educated interior designer. It would be like giving legal or medical advice without the education. Not a great idea in my opinion.

As I said in another comment, your space affects your mental health. So, never minimize your impact on other’s lives. You might literally be saving someone’s mental health, which in turn can save their life. Comfort, beauty and organization in your home lifts your spirits and feeds your soul. Looking at things you love in your home brings pleasure. Honestly, people can laugh at this, but every time I walk in my kitchen in the morning to make my coffee, and see the fridge I worked so hard for and picked out makes me so happy! My pale, yellow velvet curtains which sound hideous I know, but look beautiful in my cheerful living room makes me feel lighter in spirit. So yes, the things in your home most definitely affect your mental state. Having someone like you direct us to make our choices come together in a meaningful way to us is “Earning feathers on your Angel wings,” as my grandma would say! ;)

Good Noon Garrett, Superb insight into the need of interior designer in any home!! Thank you so much and always appreciate your straight forward and genuine talk on the subject matter. The bingo point is Builders should work along with the designers, high time. When we were renovating our property, I tried to look for that combo, but it’s not easily available or rather say not available at various price points. At the max I would hear is bathroom designers or kitchen makeover designers and builders combo. So I guess there is a lot of scope between this unison of builders and designers, hopefully soon, since we all are now talking and discussing so the seeds will germinate in the future:) You have a wonderful week, and see you soon…xx

I would love if you did a video about traditional/classic home decor accessories vs. dated decor. Many of us have inherited decor accessories from parents and grandparents (and some of those things could have been inherited from their relatives). We love and treasure some of these items. Unfortunately, they don't necessarily work with our esthetic. I have a friend who had inherited some crystal candy dishes and similar other things, and was told that her home looked like a grandma house. Ideas to incorporate these kinds of things would be very welcome. For example, I have some large crystal pieces that look like baskets to me that don't work with my design style (transitional mix of traditional and contemporary). They belonged to my parents and are 60+ years old. I just don't know what to do with them to make them look cohesive with my other pieces of decor. My Mom's style was much more traditional and formal, and always looked beautiful in her home on the coffee table. I'm sure there are other people who follow you that have the same issues!

I wish you had touched on the difference between interior design vs interior decorator. As you know, it is a world of difference with the designer being one who actually had to study much more than what looks “pretty.”. An interior decorator may be more inclined to tell you what to do and suggest expensive furnishings because their focus may be more on “pretty.”

Another great video. Several things - you may not save lives but you can save social lives. I have been to people's homes - very expensive homes - that are hideously ugly. One wonders what they were thinking. Regarding saving money, designers can potentially save one money. Hiring a professional eliminates mistakes that later have to be corrected. For example, I may purchase something for $1000 (or more). It's delivered and it doesn't work - maybe it doesn't fit. Or it's not functional. Or the fabric color is wrong so it clashes. Then I have to purchase something else. With a professional, it's one and done.

First, haters will hate. You are a successful designer and You Tuber and the more successful you will be- the more the haters will be after you. Their comments and negativity only reflect who they are not who you are. Second, « Design doesn’t save lives. » Is that the worst thing they could find to say about you and your work? If so, you’re doing great, Garrett bc most people hold jobs that don’t save lives! Lol What a lame way to show passive aggressiveness (and jalousie!) You might not save life but you improve people’s life and that’s extremely important, too. That’s certainly more important than the haters who wasted their time writing such baseless comments. You are extremely talented and knowledgeable and some of us truly appreciate your skills and professionalism. Your personality makes it even more delightful. ❤

omg... I If anyone is 'taking it down to the studs', they NEED a designer. Now I have to replace both my sink and my toilet because the pipes to maintain them cannot be accessed and they are starting to clog up. (Ack!) Yes! I was that naive! And in my kitchen? I had no idea what the architect meant by "raising" a window. I bought a VERY expensive sink to place in the only corner it could go to keep water out of the window behind it.... I searched online for months to find a sink with its' own backsplash. And then I saw how the crew was framing the kitchen and noticed that they were framing out half the window.! I didn't like that AT ALL, but I didn't have the money to re-do it. So the REAL reason a person NEEDS a designer is to save themselves from making expensive mistakes. My kitchen isn't done yet, so when it comes time to get cabinets, am I going to hire someone to analyze the layout? HELL YES!

I agree. The only reason I would use an interior decorator is if I was just too overwhelmed too busy or too sick or too lazy to go shopping. So I would have them do all the shopping and designing based on my style, and I would make the final approvals.

This was a fantastic video Garrett, thank you! I've often wondered if it's difficult for an interior designer to help a client whose tastes are completely different from their own. For example, if you can't stand Country-Cottage, is it still easy for you to help a client who loves that style? Or would they be better off finding a designer who shares their tastes? I would think it would be difficult to keep your own preferences from influencing your recommendations, or maybe it would just be difficult for me LOL.

Thanks so much! I help people with various tastes through my virtual interior decorating service. I’m formally educated in interior design, so I’m quite able and do assist people with styles that are different than my mine. My personal tastes are separate from helping someone achieve a space that reflects the style they are trying to achieve. I actually find beauty in most every design style anyway even though it might not be what I would select for my personal home.

And you saved Albert's life, and gave him a beautiful home filled with love. There are two different people who work with furniture and art etc. in people's homes: an Interior Designer, and a decorator. Everyone is a 'decorator' and they can give the profession of Interior Design a bad name. No training, snobbery, disastrous results and people ascribe this to the TRAINED professionals. Garrett, I am so glad you kept referring to yourself as an Interior Designer or a Designer - and when referring to people who do their own homes (or their friends' homes) as decorators. Are trained professional, Interior Designers worth it! Damn straight they (we) are! We can go into someone's home and fix the mistakes, save money from being spent on wrong colors, fabrics or decor and pull together a room or a house within budget. We work with treasured pieces and most importantly, we make the rooms WORK FOR YOU! We listen closely to what you say,, ask relevant questions and work hard to make you happy in a space that you can be proud of. Don't let the 'cheap', wanna-be, untrained person give the Interior Designers and the Design profession a bad rap/name. Hire a professional and watch them work within your budget to give you timeless results that make your life actually easier.

If design had no importance we would all be living in grey concrete boxes with no colour, decor or even a light shade. The fact is that being in a pleasant space affects your mood and that has an impact on your life. That said I have no patience with trends or the idea that something can look good one year but not the next. Obviously people's tastes evolve over time but good proportions, colours that work together (and with the ambient light) and beautiful materials are timeless. It annoys me to see a designer dismiss something simply because it's "So five years ago" rather than because it was always a bad idea. I'm probably many designer's nightmare because I have no interest in what is "Now" or "Dated" . I do pay attention to colour, texture, proportion, materials etc though and have learned a lot about that from watching videos like yours.

  • @GarrettLeChic

    @GarrettLeChic

    3 ай бұрын

It would not be a nightmare for me because my belief is that a home should reflect the occupant’s personality and what makes them happy rather than being concerned about what’s trending or dated as I often state in my videos. However, I think it’s nice to know what is trending or dated as sometimes we can take inspiration or not from these styles. A person’s style can change over time and that’s fine. It can be adjusted for at that time in their home.

I wandered into your content not knowing a single thing about interior design and got hooked watching your videos over six months ago. This video was very enlightening about what an interior designer actually does. I thought they just copied a certain style or their own style into peoples homes for a lot of money and never quite got why someone would hire one. But now I get it. If I had the money I'd hire one to help with accessibility and making things mesh better in my home. Keep doing you, ignore the trolls. They probably have no idea what interior design is, heck most of the people I grew up around still don't and I didn't. One of the things I've learned is thinking about how easy to clean something is before you get it for your home. That's been life changing.

Saving lives? Good design can help with relaxation by calming a person. Colors, ease of movement within a design space, feeling comfy in a space can all help lower B/P, lower stress & ultimately help people live better, longer, happier lives. Right?! Look, no 1 gets outa this alive! Meaning; even the greatest Doctors can only extend a life, they can't keep death away permantly! So, even in ur "Villian Era", u r helping 2 extend lives. Helping people is helping people, as long as it isn't negatively affecting other people along the way. And No; irritating people with different OPINIONS, does not count as a negative effect! Sorry.

I’m always glad to do a consultation, but i fear that if the furniture is too big and must stay in spaces they are in, I might not be able to help much. The scale and proportions will not look right with furniture that is too big for a space in my opinion as well as possibly creating flow and accessibility issues. I just wanted to point this out before you spent the money for a consultation.

Design and designers have been around since the beginning of time. The Egyptians pyramids, Kings Tombs, all had to be designed. One of God's attributes is creativity and design. Flowers, all different colors and kinds. Some interior design do save lives. Hospitals have a certain design as well as schools and even prisons.
