I’m not sure, you should check with the UK tax authority to find that out.

So even if someone wanted to sell on Etsy as a side hustle would a business license still be required? I was interested in reselling vintage clothing as more of a hobby to make some extra cash alongside my 9-5, but am starting to second guess. Also, I don’t hear too many Etsy sellers saying they have this. So either they are just not sharing that they do, or they are just selling without one. Would love a little more insight. Thanks!

It depends where you are and what the laws are. Where I am, you have to have a business registered before you can sell anything, and if you start selling things before you register you can get hit with fines and penalties. Other places don't require a business license at all, so it varies by location. Etsy doesn't require a business license but they also have in the terms of use that you're responsible for following all the laws that you're supposed to be following. Can I open a new business name on Etsy under a DBA? My husband has a business registered in Texas, should I use all his information for the taxes?

You'd have to check what the laws abotu that say in your state. In virginia I have different businesses set up with DBAs that are under the umbrella of my LLC. I report all of my business income through the LLC.

I'm trying to help a friend set up an Etsy shop. They have a non profit business. When trying to set up the Etsy account, I selected business and not the individual. It then said enter a charter number. I have an EIN number, but I don't have a charter number. Must I have a charter number? I see it says, "This is a number issued by your local jurisdiction for your registered business, and it is different from your Federal Employer Identification Number." Please help. Thank you!

I've never seen that, so I'm not sure. I would leave it empty and see if Etsy takes it. Otherwise, you probably have to contact Etsy support to see what to do, unfortunately.

Maybe I'm being silly, but I've been on Etsy for several years and it seems that lately they are requiring more official documentation and photos of me that with all the cyber hacks and the way our info is not safe online - I'm not willing to give it. I don't really understand why they need my photo. The person is buying my product, not me.

It’s all because the government is cracking down on people making money online and not paying their taxes, basically.

If you are selling on Etsy to customers in the USA and abroad (Europe, etc.), do you only need a license in the state that you are living in? And how do taxes work when selling abroad?

Etsy handles the taxes for you, and yes, your licensing would be in the plce where you're located.

Etsy handles the sales tax for us, and your business licese will be issued in the location where you're located. If you sell in more than one state you mgiht need to be licensed in both places, so you'd need to check on that if that's your situation.

So here’s a question, is a business license the same as a sellers permit? That’s what’s required where I am.

It depends on where you are. I have DBAs for all of my shops and websites but it’s all under the same business license.
