You don't need an EIN to start a business bank account. You can be a Sole Proprietor, using your social security number, as long as you advertise, then file for "fictitious name" registration with the state. This allows you to make up a name for your business, and then start a business checking account without needing an EIN. If you are going to use your real name as your business name, i.e.; "John Doe" , then you don't even need to file a fictitious name with the state. Most people will use a fictitious name. An EIN has it's advantages of course... if you are making your own product to sell, then an EIN allows you to get a Tax ID number so that you don't have to pay sales tax on the parts that go into your product.

Hey Hannah, Thanks for sharing such valuable information. I need your views on it. I am someone with great ability to run an Etsy store successfully. Unfortunately, Etsy has banned my country this year and people are using VPNs or using overseas partners to continue their business regardless of banning. I have contacted Etsy as well to know whether it's legal or not but they are not responding. What are your views on it because people are doing business by using international partner Names/addresses/bank detail etc?should i use he same strategy?

Hey Hannah great video! Question, do you cover a full seo strategy in your course? Saw your video on mistakes you made with using some bad keywords, can’t find any info on things to avoid for keyword research. Do you have any advice on how to know you’re not using forbidden/bad keywords for a listing? Saw a post the other day how a listing that used ‘amber’ to describe color was suspended… wild!

Hello Hanna! I'm thinking of creating my LLC. I am outside the United States, in fact I am in a country not enabled by Etsy, however, I have my family in the United States and I can connect to a computer at home to manage the store from there. Can I open my Etsy shop if I don't have a social security number? only the information of my llc. Thanks for your valuable information. 🙏

Maybe I’m late to this but I got scammed on Etsy. I purchased what I thought was a handmade bag, and I just happened to google handmade makeup bags and saw the same bag I bought off Etsy on Alibaba. Yes.. I’m sure most people know this, unfortunately I didn’t. I spent almost $60 on the item and shipping and handling because I thought it was handmade and I was willing to pay the insane shipping costs from London. Luckily Etsy refunded me my money, but I had to go back and forth for a few days between the seller, Etsy, and my bank. So BEWARE guys when you’re buying on Etsy especially on “handmade” makeup bags. I don’t know if this is what most people do nowadays to make a quick buck 😣, and maybe I’m very ignorant of the world, and believing in a website to only sell handmade items.

Hey Hannah! If you have an existing LLC - do you know if you can add in the EIN number to your ETSY shop with a different name? Or does the LLC name have to be the same as Etsy shop name which essentially is your business. I guess I am answering my question as I type this out. Probably a good idea to have the same name lol

Your business name that holds the EIN does not have to be the same as your shop name, in etsy you can input your ein and legal business name

That was a really useful information. Thanks! I have a question though, I am a sole proprietor and registered my business. Recently I opened a business bank account which is not my birth name but a business name. I have opened my Etsy shop under business name as well. But Etsy says bank name should match my legal name. What can I do? Do I need to change my business account name to my legal name ?

Your legal name is registered on your business bank account so that should be fine

I believe it can be the same bank account IF the brands are not selling the same thing, but the Safer play would be to make everything separate, different bank accounts, work off diff WIFI networks, diff LLCs/addresses, different laptops. I personally did this because JUST in case one account goes down they will connect the IP addresses of the 2 and shut both accounts down. I have had 3 accounts taken from me before and it is not fun

Hello Hanna, Thanks for the great informations you provide! I seeking a clarification about my case, I'm based in Morocco 🇲🇦, and i have opened my first etsy shop in 2020, and in 2023 my account has been suspended due to some products that are against the Etsy policies, well i wasn't aware if those kind of products are illegal to sell on etsy or not. However etsy got my informations in the black list, so whenever i try to open a new etsy shop, it gets suspended! So my question here is: if i creat a US LLC for my clothing brand and try to open an Etsy shop with the same personal informations but this time as a brand owner does this will lead to the suspension too?!

It would need a new name, bank account and IP address so off a different computer with a different wifi connection

Yes you need to pay tax regardless if it is run through a business or not

I want to open an etsy shop but dont think ill be doing it long term. Im just really curious to see if i like the experience of selling digital products on etsy. SO... can i just open it with my ssn and use the bank account i have right now? Do i need a separate bank account or can i just track all my expenses and sales? Honestly, dealing with taxes is the only thing holding back 🙄
