Do You Know The First State to Gain Independence?
Europe, a continent rich in cultural and historical diversity, has undergone a long and complex process towards its current configuration of 50 sovereign states. This text aims to explore the path that led to the birth of independent Europe, analyzing struggles for independence, nationalist movements, and processes of secession that have characterized the continent's recent history.
The National Awakening:
Since the early 19th century, Europe has witnessed a resurgence of national sentiments, with movements seeking to defend and promote the cultural and linguistic identities of various regions. These nationalist movements have often led to conflicts and revolutions, contributing to the emergence of new political entities.
Wars of Independence:
Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, many European nations fought to gain their independence from foreign rule or to consolidate their national sovereignty. Significant examples include the Italian and Greek Wars of Independence, as well as the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires.
The Fall of Empires:
The 20th century saw the collapse of numerous European empires, including the Austro-Hungarian, Russian, Ottoman, and Third Reich empires. These events paved the way for the formation of new independent states and the redefinition of European borders.
Post-War and the Cold War:
After World War II, Europe emerged divided between two ideological blocs, with the Cold War influencing the process of independence and state formation. Many countries in Eastern Europe gained independence from the Soviet Union in the late 1980s and early 1990s, marking a historic turning point in Europe's political landscape.
Contemporary Europe:
Today, Europe is composed of 50 independent states, each with its own history, culture, and national identity. The European Union has provided a framework for political and economic cooperation and integration among these states, while challenges such as nationalism, separatism, and regional tensions continue to shape the continent's future.
Conclusion:
The independence of European states and the birth of Europe are the result of centuries of struggles, conflicts, and national aspirations. The continent has traversed a complex path towards national sovereignty, with the formation of 50 independent states reflecting the diversity and cultural richness of Europe. Despite facing ongoing challenges, Europe remains an example of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among sovereign nations.

@tsukuyimi Hi Tsukuyimi, and thanks for the comment. The thumbnail is symbolic not detailed, it is to give the idea of Europe 😉. Crimea for many states and especially for the European Union, is not recognized to Russia, while for pro-Russian countries, it belongs to Russia.

Thanks Ivan for your comment...from a geographical point of view, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Kazakhstan are located on the Asian continent (Western Asia), but these states are often included among the European states, due to historical-cultural considerations. They are transcontinental countries located between Europe and Asia
