Athletes in individual sports like golf and boxing should be able to bet on themselves. Athletes on teams should not be allowed to make any bets on their sport; they have access to insider information and it would compromise the legitimacy of sports leagues. Does Ryder Cup count as a team? Technically. So, maybe golfers should be able to bet on themselves in tournaments but not on team events. Golf is a gambling game for most duffers; there should be gambling involved in professional golf. I want to see $200k side bets on putts.

All this is talk on a show that is designed to attract viewers with sensational stories. For some people, the hearsay is entertaining. There really isn’t anything that an average person could identify with when it comes to Phil. He really has some work to do, but with that Saudi money it seems unlikely that he will ever acknowledge the problem let alone put in the work to correct it. The story about him and the Augusta practice range is a perfect example as he thinks it’s something to brag about when it shows his better than attitude. It’s very unappealing.

I’m sure Phil’s a big gambler but you have to be skeptical of an ex con selling a book. Compounded by his assertion that he talked Phil out of this Ryder cup bet, seemingly because he’s so ethical and cares about Phil. He cares about Phil so much he’s selling him out in a book now.

Well said.
I don't think it should be legal for players to bet on themselves, because they already make prize money and a salary. I don't think they should be paid betting money as well, for betting on an outcome they can control.
I bet he's talking about Norm Macdonald with the blackjack
His money he can do whatever he wants 🤷🏻♂️
No problem with him gambling his money his choice. Do have a problem with him complaining about taxes and the unfairness of paying his fair share.
How better to sell a book than create BS controversy about A famous person??
lol. Phil was one of the first to go LIV. 💯 truth
i don't see how anyone could have an issue with someone gambling (unless you bet yourself to lose, that is). however, when you are in a gambling deficit, you will find any measure to cover those losses; such as leading a defection from the PGA Tour...
What the heck is wrong with this dude? Worth almost a billion dollars. It's never enough.

What is lost in this is that Phil was making numerous bets with offshore books and bookies which was illegal. I doubt he could have saved Billy Walters from going to prison but he was almost charged with insider trading himself. Phil has always been a interesting personality but he sold out by going to LIV. His reputation is sullied from here on out.
Between LIV and saving his ass with the gambling controversy, this former role model is ruining the game of golf…period.
No - "everyone" is not doing it.

@@Hiluxtaco he didnt lose a billion, he staked a billion, maybe overall lost 50m or so, or more, but was always able to source new income if he needed to, after bad losses, and had a few famous huge wins gambling wise. it sounds like his main pattern was placing hundreds if not thousands of bets that were placing 100k to win 110k, so fairly safe, and he was in the position to be able to place them without worrying too much, and very much getting a huge buzz from it.

He is not taking into account that the 100 million he lost was not one bet, Also the one billion he bet was offset by the 900 million he won.
Whatever he lost was his. Nobody's business as long as he has enough $$ to keep his family in good shape. "he could give that to charity", yeah, so they can waste 90%of it.
It all depends on what he wagered. If it was the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, WNBA, MSL, PBA, NCAA or a horse race it doesn't matter. If he put one dollar on a PGA event, even if he was not playing, you could liken it to insider knowledge. Just ask Pete. HOF?

If you bet on yourself as a sportsperson, obviously you could fix it with your opponent, I'm guessing it's not legal common sense
I don’t have an issue with his gambling. He earned the money and it’s his to do with as he wishes.
I really don’t care much for what a professional athlete does or says. If he wants of bet all his money away who cares, I only care if he is betting the other side of the bet for him to loose then that’s a problem. If he wants to bet that he will win then that is up to their respective organizations to approve or disapprove of those actions not my place. Honestly, I am not a fan of Phil.
It’s his money. But it’s obvious he’s got a problem.
Look, it is his money, if he is betting legally then it is his choice.... If you say it is illegal, prove it.. What is the point of making judgements on other people. It is none of anyone's business unless one is directly affected. And if he has the money let it go. Where is the proof of the amount he bet as well. All this is talk on a show that is designed to attract viewers with sensational stories. For some people, the hearsay is entertaining. When they hold the Congress people accountable for insider trading, then let's talk about others. Ok, so I listened to the end. This was almost 20 min. of conjecture and hearsay. This show is usually better than that.
Wait until someone's got a couple of grand on a golf tournament winner and screams out during a competitors final putt to tie???
His money. He can bet as much as he wants.
"Bothers me as a father and husband" WHAT A LOSER

Dude has money, has right to spend that money as he wants it. Soo why would anyone be bothered? Relax people
What I have a problem with is that while the pga has had some issues and areas of improvement his complaints about the tour has been a big reason why it's now now Saudi owned all because he's a degenerate gambler!!
Now we know why Phil loves the Saudis
You can't gamble on things you're involved in. Doesn't matter if it's for or against. If he's not involved in it, have a ball. I think basketball is full of illegal shit. College, NBA, all of it

No but I have a problem with golf being called a real sport.
He lost way more than ten percent. He made a billion dollars worth of bets. You could do that easily having 2 to 3 hundred million, ultimately losing 100 million. Thats way more than 10 percent. Just saying. It’s not like he had a billion in 2010 and only lost ten percent. Dan misses this. Note: love these guys.
Phil, should not be allow to be playing golf plain and simple what’s the difference between him or Pete Rose, they both bet big times on sports.

How is being a asshole gambling his own money?@@Reedjohnmiller
Your're the one with the problem DAN.
Phil has been known to be a degenerate gambler for a long time, but there are so many other things that bring his character into question and as a former Phil fan it’s really disappointing to see.
The greatest American gambler ever (he’s in prison writing a book). Yeah that’s the greatest ever alright.
It is not a problem, it is an addiction
Thinking LIV don't give a shit how Phil bets.
It's his money...
Tigers body broke down due to PEDs. Let talk about that instead.
sounds like a phil problem to me. don't care. just like to see him play when he is on.
pretty impressive he only lost 100 mil
The PGA should investigate whether Phil bet on any events he was playing in and give him the Pete Rose treatment. Lifetime ban, plus removal of al PGA wins. This dude has been a destructive force.
If he did most of those bets legally. Wouldn't Mickelson get comps from the sportsbook casinos? Especially if hes a loser of a hundred million.
Phil had to side with Saudi to pay gambling
This is old news...do you have an issue with Eldrick's PEDs use, drug abuse, DWI habit, cheating on his wife, girlffiends, many lovers, contempt for his millions of fans, his reputation for heing a tight ass, him representing The First Tee when he didn't represent a single of their character trait, how everyone (media, police, fans, sponsors) cover for his dispicable behaviour.....
