I was usually doing it on paper or Moxfield, but now after this episode, i'll try out Archidekt!
I actually learned about 6 types of play-testing: 1. Goldfish -- the "Do-Nothing" 2. Cat -- "The Schemer" 3. Dog -- "The Intellect" 4. Turtle -- "The Hard to Kill" 5. Rabbit -- "The Racer" 6. Bird -- "Mr. Evasion" Here is what each does: (Note: Each test begins at the same life total you do.) 1. Goldfish: Goldfish testing is literally the basic test, to see if your deck can function without interruption. 2. Cat: This test presumes that through the first 5 turns, it doesn't react. From Turn 5 and every other turn after, the Cat will wreck something because it can. So choose up to three nonland permanents, and roll a d6 to see if they get destroyed or removed. 3. Dog: The Dog test is more intellect based. The way this test works is, every second turn, counter the better card your deck casts. Every fourth turn, board wipe all creatures. Every 8th turn, board wipe all nonland permanents. 4. Turtle: The Turtle test presumes that every turn, the Turtle will gain X life, where X turn is the turn it is. Turtles also prevent 1 damage from every source you control. 5. Rabbit: The Rabbit test is simple: Put an X/X creature token with haste on the battlefield, where X is the number of turns it is, up to turn 6. Every time a creature token is removed, replace it on Rabbit's next turn. The goal for Rabbit is to race you to 0 life the fastest it can. 6. Bird: Similar to Rabbit, Bird gets fliers every turn, where Rabbit gets only ground creatures. The goal is to race you to 0 life the fastest. The best way to test a deck? Run it through each of these tests, until you win. Count up the number of attempts. The less attempts you have for a certain test that is below your number of Goldfish attempts means for that test, your deck is performing above expectations. Doing each of these tests will show you where your deck's strengths and weaknesses are. Good luck!

@@crossovercommander3695 : Not a problem! Glad I help. Of course, if you wanted to invest some time and materials into testing, look up a very obscure test in Magic called "Deep IQ." While it is old (I think it was created before 7th Edition was ever released, but could be wrong on that), you can update it with a more modern feel. I did. The problem for me is the best thing you could do is have, like, 100 Infinitokens (blank dry-erase card tokens) to essentially run a simulated Commander game with 3 opponents. And other than the charts and Inifinitokens, the only things you would need are 3 trackers (one for each Deep IQ opponent), and dice.

This is Sweet i might try this with my decks and see how it works so how many turns and games do you do for these? (i'm assuming when you hypothetically win the game, from like 5 games for a average number of turns) also how about animal for players who constantly keep shooting your board down. (example your playing slivers and there's someone who hates them so much your target number 1 no matter what the other players do.)

And it’s free 😎
I usually goldfish to around 7-8 turns to find if my deck works. But to give that simulation of targeted removal or boardwipes, on the 4th turn, I roll a d6. On a 5-6 result, my strongest/engine enabler gets removed. If I didn't roll 5/6, the next turn something gets removed on a 4-6 roll. And this gets higher if nothing gets removed again the following turn (roll 3-6, something gets removed, etc.) To simulate board wipes, starting on turn 5, I roll a d4. On a 4, my board is wiped (creatures only). I also simulate using removals turn 4 and up, including it to my mana costs, combat sequencing, etc. It's not perfect, but at the moments I have my stuff removed, I can simulate using my protection spells, removals, and whatnot. Great and insightful episode as always! ❤

I’ve been using an extreme version of what you do, which is where on turn 4 I just blow up whatever I feel like my opponents would target on my board and then keep playing. This ensures my deck has resilience built in because it forces me to recover. I like your method better though!
I goldfish my deck so much (mostly because I'm new to mtg and I'm only now starting to meet other players). What I do the most, and found so useful, is I play 10 rounds and after every 2 rounds I remove from the board the most powerful creature or enchantment that I have on the board, just to see how I can come back from that. Sometimes I also just lay in bed and go through my cards to try and learn combos by heart and be able to play them quickly irl. Love the Command Zone, keep it up guys you rock!!! :)

One thing that I think goldfishing can *really* help with is colour balancing your lands. If you're playing a four colour deck, knowing what lands you need in the first five turns to cast your spells on time is something that's better done with a bunch of playtest games than with real play.
I love goldfishing. I don't get to play as often as I'd like to so it's a way for me to pseudo-play. I also agree that it's huge to know whether a build will work how you hoped. Better to know before you sleeve up cards than in the middle of a game.

And they are reading the cards stll trying to figure out what they do.
A great goldfishing tip I learned was to play cards face down as lands if I commonly find myself not using them, especially if I was one or two cards over a hundred to get down or find "cool" dead cards.

Actually this idea rules
I do exactly what Josh does; I put on a show and just goldfish a deck. Man, it's a very cathartic experience.
Gold fishing does so much. Helps you understand your decks gameplan, find out interesting card synergies, find out if you have enough removal/ramp/card draw, and find out if you even like the deck. Imo it’s one of the most important things to do.
you guys are absolutely crushing it with the podcast episodes lately! what a cool interactive episode
I goldfish because it's good for my decks and my gameplay, but it's also just chill and meditative. Helps me manage anxiety and my mana curve. Great episode, folks!
Been watching the podcast since the beginning and wanted this episode for years. Thank you so much
Thank you for this episode - it really opened up the format for me! As a lifelong Limited player, I always found deckbuilding a chore, but now I can just throw my jank pile onto archidekt, see how it goldfishes, come up with ideas, find cards on edhrec and scryfall, repeat until it feels good. It's easy and fun, and best of all, it doesn't even require friends or money!
I'm happy it got mentioned, because I Goldfish the way that guy from the Pixar short plays chess. 4 of my decks on Moxfield windows lol. It works for me!

@TheSpunYarn

@TmissinglinkC I've just gotten so used to the interface that it's all instinctive now. Once you remember what all the relevant shortcuts are (sending things to grave, shuffling, sending to bottom of library, etc.) you'll start moving at a better clip. when you tutor you can type the name of the card you want to avoid manually looking for its name. Speed comes with time! Simulating a Commander game - something that can take a while - will take a while anyways.

Just wanted to say, I watched this video and took the learnings back to a pet deck of mine that I could never get to work how I wanted. Lo and behold just goldfishing the deck a good 100+ times finally helped me understand what the deck wanted moreso than what I wanted. It's now become easily my favorite deck to goldfish/pilot, and am looking forward to getting it in paper!
Absolutely love this video!! Goldfishing is so crucial.. I will not build a paper deck or buy cards until I goldfish it to see if it is a deck I even enjoy!! Then I goldfish paper a ton after before I actually take it to LGS! Also helps me catch any weird interactions in my cards I did not realize was there which gives me time to look up the rules and gain better knowledge.. Goldfish has been so beneficial to me!
I've been doing it without realizing what folks were referring to when they talk about goldfishing. I think I played my first commander deck 50 times before I played it against friends.
Listening to this episode popped a memory of me "goldfishing" my new started deck that I got for my birthday. It was just a few days before 2006 and the deck was a MonoRed Samurai Starter Deck from Kamigawa block. Yeah not the best moment to start MTG but I got hooked.
Favourite moment was the non scry land play, then gaining the life as well. Very relatable, I can definitely say I have done this type of thing all the time!
I always did this with my decks, but never knew the name! Thanks for the tips
This is honestly one of the best information I knew about but never really did. And now Im going to do it more often. I only have 5 decks and I always wanted to know how 'Game Knights' players tuned there decks. 👍
Word of advice: if your goldfishing is telling you shoud not play a Signet over a creature then it means you should consider not playing ramp. The deck is very low to the ground and it is ok to not play ramp bc creatures will make your commander trigger reliably. Just play 40-42 lands, cut the signets and up the number of creatures.
One method of goldfishing I started to do recently was have two displays (my monitor and TV) with two of my decks in Archidekt's playtester while having a third physical deck in front of me, and play a three-way game by myself. It helps me to better ascertain what any one of my decks are capable of when going up against others that may or may not be a challenging match-up. It also helps me to think more about threat and resource assessment and have something to use my interactive cards on rather than let them sit in my hand for multiple turns. The same can be said for taking the time to evaluate what goes on the stack and what interactions occur there to better sequence my plays.
That intro made me subscribe to the highest tier of Patreon.
Very cool video. Especially showing how you guys goldfish. Important, but I think underrated and rarely talked about topic

Glad you enjoyed it!
I goldfish all of my brews on Moxfield. When I am finally satisfied with the build I will goldfish them in paper to see how it plays when I am shuffling the deck vs. an auto shuffler. One difference I do with my decks is that I actually search with the tutors. This way the deck is freshly shuffled and I can see how it would actually play out. It is very important in a combo deck which I play a lot of. This does mean however, that I am sometimes shuffling 3 or 4 times in a row.
What I do when goldfishing is to play the deck out completely until I've in theory reduced my opponents' life totals to zero, or at the very least have presented a board state that wins within the next few turns. Playing out how the deck actually presents a win is crucial to moments where you're in a winning position, but can't quite call it quits, especially in decks that don't win in easy to visualize ways like token or voltron strategies. I find that it helps value decks in particular, since those strategies often times get caught up in decision paralysis when they're winning, so getting good at the nitty gritty parts can really speed things along. As an example, I've recently brewed a budget Commodore Guff deck, and getting good at sequencing what abilities to activate and when on large board states is imperative to clean gameplay, so I play through it further than most would, all in order to avoid 10 to 20 minute turns in real games.
I’ve been playing Magic for quite some time, but it wasn’t until I saw this video that I understood the benefits of goldfishing. Thank you for teaching me yet another valuable thing about this game! 🙏
It do be like that sometimes. If you don't goldfish you end up with 15 minute turns that go nowhere if you get a lead you didn't expect.
I really appreciate that this video lets you watch Josh and Rachel actually goldfish, rather than just talk about it in theory. It gives us a valuable perspective you don’t get from other videos on this topic. It’s a great, practical way to teach.
13:42 Josh tossing out the phrase "nut-draw" 😂
My wife literally called it "fishbowling" also! We both had a good laugh about how Rachel called it that too 😄
As a Magic lover and a fish lover, I hope the fish in the intro is someone's pet who just made a brief cameo and then went home to a larger tank. Goldfish are actually quite big when they're full-grown, and keeping them in a too-small tank will reduce the length and quality of their lives by a huge margin. Fish, like any other animal, have thoughts and feel pain. The same gag could have been made with a different type of fish that would thrive in a tank that size. A betta, for example, could be happy and comfortable for many years in a 10-gallon tank like the one shown! Best wishes for your fishes, and have fun goldfishing your decks!
A few of my decks are quite complicated and Goldfishing has really helped me master them. The practice also helped me discover a handful of cool combos that aren't in any database.
Really nice of scoops from mtggoldfish to come on as a guest for the opening segment
My secret to goldfishing is 'any card can be command tower'. I just take my stack of 120 or whatever and shuffle it up with little to no lands in it. When I notice I've turned a card into command tower pretty often, that card gets cut. This forces me to keep my curves low and lets me worry about color balance at the end
Why not go search? You have to shuffle your deck which is going to affect which cards you see. Maybe I missed it happening but it didn’t look like any shuffling effects that would happen actually did.
I didn't grok the goldfish thumbnail at first but thought this video was going to be about passing the turn quicker, so you could play more total games and thus win more. My interpretation still works taking your advice though, since goldfishing will help you play turns quicker and get more games in that way too!
Love this hands on content!! I’ve been waiting for yall to do something like this and I love it! I think it would be really cool if yall did the same thing but for deck building and showing how Rachel uses Scryfall. ❤
Since a job change and city move a couple years ago, the first few decks I've built in the new house I have Goldfished a lot. So that way, on the rare chance I do get to get a game or two in, it's functional. Appreciate the episode guys, also love the cold opening.
Thank you so much for this one. For the longest time I was wondering how TF to playtest my decks other than playing in my pod.
This was incredibly insightful. Great episode!
That intro was amazing!
I goldfish my decks often either in paper or virtually. I didnt used to search my deck for cards when i cracked fetches but with one of my decks, I learned during a game that I wasn't running any basic mountains. I didn't realize it during testing because I never actually searched. Now I do search just to double-check my mana base, make sure I have enough in there. Another thing I do is if I want to test a new card, I pretend that new card is my first card drawn of the game (so the 8th card in my hand) and then I see how it does. I used to keep it in my opening hand but it's more fun to look at a normal opening hand and then top deck the new card. It becomes clear if the new card works with your deck or not at that point. I do the same thing Josh does too. I have a stack of cards I want to try spread out next to me during the game. Makes it easy to swap things in and out.
@TmissinglinkC
23 күн бұрын
Not sure if it is just your wording. But the fetch lands can get any land that says like, plains, swamp or whichever one of the two you're looking for. edit: the fetch lands don't have to just get basic lands.
I was Goldfishing my upgraded Admiral Brass deck while watching this xD. Noticed that prior to my Commander coming online, I dont have a lot of mechanics to mill cards
Can't tell you how much time I have spent on MTG goldfish looking at other people's decks, buying a ton of cards and then feeling meh about what is in it. Love Love Love the comment of buy some sticky notes and use that to test a deck before purchasing. Thank you for this video!
As a huge fan of the channel The Why Files I was very please to see a goldfish hahah I love the command zone, you guys rock!
Rather than just going 5 to 7 turns, I personally tend to go until I "win" by either hitting an infinite combo or dealing enough normal or Commander damage to have taken out all opponents. Of course that's all without opposition, so it's not an exact science, but I find it more helpful than just going until I get an engine online.
Love the introduction. It feels so quiet despite the music lol
It's Fishbowling, you're fine. My fun one though was when I referred to "noodling" as "cat-fisting" before someone was able to catch their breath enough to correct me.
I just finished building my first ever deck and play tested it on moxfield for the past three weeks to the point of thinking "am I getting way too into this? Is this too much?". Good to know this is not only a very normal thing with magic but apparently VERY encouraged 😂

Goldfishing is awesome but nothing beats actually playing the deck against a concious opponent. One thing I started doing after a friend of mine told me he did it was to play two of my decks against eachother, that way you get to goldfish two decks at once and you get to see how they can deal with interaction. It has always been amazing but of course you can't let your bias and knowledge of hands change the way you play. You could even flip coins or roll dice to determine if you would use removal or not in cases where your knowledge of the deck might interfere to simulate scenarios with average opponents.

@@mufasafalldown8401 i was home on medical leave for the three weeks so I had a LOT of time haha. The last three cards actually just came in the mail so it's go time 😎
i played the rocky theme while Josh was goldfishing and i gotta say it added a lot to the experience
Was goldfishing while watching this, I feel so enlightened. lol
Long time goldfisher but you honestly taught me some things that will make that process better.
For whatever reason i thought goldfishing two decks against each other would be the best method. Thank you for bringing up why it's not ideal
I usually go to turn 10 keeping track of life total and see if I could 'solo' the table. I usually err on the side of protection over removal so I will casually spend them throughout the goldfish, but I think I will incorporate the first 3-4 turns drill to see how my deck is working in the beginning stage. I really like the golf metaphor. I've been doing the driving range, but I need to work on my short game and add that to my drills while goldfishing.
Another awesome episode. Thank you Josh Lee for wearing pride colours, our community truly appreciates that ❤. You guys are awesome :)
One thing I like to do is make a list of six sweepers I’m likely to play against, and when I have a board state that is likely to draw a sweeper out, role a d6 to see which sweeper I get hit with to see how well the deck can rebuild.
As a storm player I learned very quickly that if you are stumbling over what spells to cast in what order... your opponents will QUICKLY get annoyed waiting on you to see if you are winning or fizzling. Practice practice practice
Wow this really opened my eye to how good goldfishing is!!!
For some decks goldfishing into later turns where things pop off with lots of triggers and game actions is helpful just for getting the practice in handling those events. Like Timey Wimey suspend stuff, i've had praise for smoothly resolving many cards going into suspend and coming out,. All thanks to goldfishing those moments. Same for counters and tokens for something like my Temur Superfriends that can easily end up with 2-6 copies of each planeswalker I cast thanks to The Sixth Doctor.
I love how they are basically just playing Yugio in the intro. No mana tapping, just slapping cards down and doing things.
The way the first toski was constructed reminds me of the old precons, with multiple playstyles in the same deck.
My best buddy always playtests against 3 other decks he knows well to simulate a commander game. It really helped him improve threat assessment and sequencing to a point where he often dominates real games.
Loved the intro (and love goldfishing!) 👌🏼
I might be one of few who does this, but I often set up 4 of my decks and play a game while I pilot all 4. Challenging sometimes to try to imagine that I don't know what's in everybody's hands. Awesome always because I can more clearly see why and when something doesn't work since I have access to all the information. Try it if you can, I've had some of my most miraculous and HUGEST flips in these games I play myself.
10-14 single target interaction? That's insane man!
Excellent episode..i have a problem with card choice decision paralysis and when i decide to build a deck i have 300 cards i feel and weeding out its challenging
Using a "wildcard" is a great idea
One thing that I do to see what the variance in my deck might be like when I finish fishing one game I will not shuffle in those cards but continue playing the next while fishing off the top. If I need to search for a card that I played previously I'll go into the pile from my previous fish as if it was in the deck but will try not to shuffle in the cards back in. What this can do is provide me with a better idea of if my deck has dud hands more often, as sometimes all it takes is 1 or 2 cards to make a hand feel like it is broken.
Ive been doing this for two weeks waiting to play , learnt that i needed way more card draw.
What I usually do when goldfishing my decks, is adding random turns where my opponents could play removal. Starting turn 4-5. This will test my deck for it's survivability and endurance.
I like goldfishing to help find interactions within my deck and also to learn how interactions play out, rules wise. This has helped me learn the the stack better and layering of triggers etc. It has also helped me learn to shuffle better. When I first started goldfishing I wasn't shuffling long enough and I would land bad hands more often. So it has helped me learn ways to shuffle better and randomize my deck better. us gives you a better overall feel for how the deck runs and should assist you with speed of game play when you do sit down with other people to play a game.
There is so much great info in this. I goldfish a decent amount, but there is so much more I could be thinking about when I goldfish. My most goldfished deck is Omnath, Locus of Rage (3RRGG), so the biggest thing I look for is how soon can I cast the commander.
I do it so much and has been really useful especially for removing cards that seem good but jsut unlikely to get play as the value will not be comparable to other choices in ur hand
I had an idea for you guys to do with your Patreons, maybe once a month you pick a decklist submittedby a patreon subscriber and do a $50 deck upgrade like you do with the precons. I think that would be a cool thing to do
Everytime Josh says Sage of Fables, im gonna guess he means Keeper of Fables. Also great episode great discussion. I probably goldfish any list 3-500ish times before it ever sees the light of day, so i can 100% relate this stuff. 🔥
Thank you for this great advice.
I learned through gold fishing my Ognis deck that two mana ramp was a must in my opening hand in order to get Ognis making treasures fast. I also learned that Kalain was not only my best two mana ramp piece but one of the best cards in the deck because it helped me scale into the late game. It really does pay to playtest
I thought the name goldfish came from a duelist article “play your pet” or something like that. But I’m old as hell so maybe I’m remembering it wrong.
A little note about Stalker is that descend only triggers from permanent CARDS and tokens aren't cards
1:49:12 something I like to do when gold fishing these types of decks is ask myself what would be the worst case scenario? What piece of my board would be the most devastating loss? Then continue to play as if it was removed
I love crunchy complex interactions in my decks. I like having a bunch of things with loads of activated and triggered abilities. The lines take super long for me to parse if I haven’t goldfished the deck beforehand. This game can get complicated really quickly, and it feels really good to come prepared and do what I can to not bog down gameplay. I only hold myself to this expectation, since I probably do MtG stuff the most out of my playgroup, but if I can take extra time out of game that I’ll still enjoy to make sure my friends get more in game time to play that sounds like a really great trade. Also gold fishing is just super relaxing for me.
This is a great skill to learn for sure, games are rare for me and I want the deck to perform the few times I play
I know something better than just goldfish: Forge. Well, often bots decide like "Who do I atta... Player!" or "This thing doesn't make sense when I play it on silly creature on the player, but I do it anyway" BUT against 4 bots, when they don't act 100% stupid and only 80% stupid, you can see if your deck truly runs. Stay crunchy.

the only real problem with that is they do stuff no normal player would ever do like constantly destroying mana rocks on early turns (unless that decks owner is a toxic/cedh commander.) removing lands on T1-T3 and shooting the target that's not the most threatening (for example you have a smothering tithe but yet it targets a far less threatening thing.)

@@chrisgebben2043Correct. But still better than goldfish. Because that can happen in normal edh too and don't say "No, it doesn't" because you may just not have experienced it yet :D And pray that you never will O_O It's... astonishing how some players do threat evaluating. The most important thing is: You at least have opponents that do stuff, no matter if it's logical or not. Stay crunchy.
This was a cool one, folks. I think its going to be helpful to many players.
When I still played with physical cards I used to play two of my decks against each other to test them out. I’d just make the best play available for each deck and see how the other deck could respond over a few games.
Goldfishing really helped me with my Zada deck and my CEDH Marwyn deck. As Mr. Infect pointed out, Zada can take nightmarishly long turns and accomplish nothing. Knowing when to go for the big turn and learning how to speed that process up was invaluable. With Marwyn, goldfishing showed me lines I never knew my deck had allowing me to combo when I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to. Also, is it just me or is goldfishing surprisingly therapeutic?
For the Teysa deck, you may already have this in there or have thought about this, but how about Pulse Tracker from Worldwake? B for a 1/1 vampire rogue, attack trigger of "Whenever Pulse Tracker attacks, each opponent loses 1 life." No evasion, but can come down turn one, can usually get a couple of procs off of it before the board gets clogged up, enough to Teysa going. Could remove a clunkier 4 drop since you talked about having a lot of those. Love the video by the way :)
This is why I find moxfield so useful, because you dont need the paper to goldfish a deck! I know my Gargos deck is pretty even because i goldfished it until it was good
I've been theorycrafting and playing solitaire for 20 plus years since I've been building decks. It's definitely helpful for players of all types
i'll probably start using the planar dice in my gold fish routine. i usually flip a coin to determine if some interacted if i know this interaction will cause a player to response.
My favorite part was when "unexpected" swan song was cast!
