Absolutely love my new P790's. Finally upgraded from my beloved R7 TP's i had been playing for the last 12 years, I loved those clubs but it was more than time to upgrade. After about 6 rounds in with the P790's I am averaging about a 195 yard carry with my 7 iron. I am 6'6" which a high swing speed and my shafts are X stiff and +1.5 long. These things are amazing and for me its hard to find a green I cannot get at with a mid to low iron. The only negative I can find with the clubs is that with the 8,9 & PW especially sometimes I get 10ish yards I wasn't planning on when you hit it 'too good' and you can fly over the back of greens. Its happened to me a handful of times in my first few rounds but now that I got more used to them its not near as much of a problem as it was to start.

I watched this video and it made me so excited to try these clubs. Ended up getting fit into p790s with the i95 steel fiber shafts. Should have them in a couple weeks, can’t wait to hit the range and dial in my new distances. On average I was 15-20yards longer per club, with the same stopping power. I’ll take that all day.

Hi David after watching your review I got fitted 10 days ago i have got a 10 gram lighter shaft and my average distance increased from 140 yards to 160 which was where it was at 50 years old with the 7 iron i am 70 now they feel quite good not as soft as my v6 very pleased as I would not have looked at this type of club in the pay Thanks Willie

I went in for a fitting hoping to game these as i love Tmade gear but in the end ended up with the Titleist t200s. They just gave me the perfect numbers for my swing and front to back dispersion and forgivness was unreal on the t200s. These are my first ever Titleist purchase so I'm hoping the results transfer from the fitting to the course.

Cool hope you enjoy the T200. Not sure why, but I didn’t hit them well during my fitting. Got the P790 with DG 105 VSS. I hit that stock shaft the best 🤷‍♀️

I was a blade player in my 20 up to now. I’m 38 and don’t swing as hard as I used to. The 790 was a perfect choice.

That discussion about workability and even being able to pull off the shot that you envision was spot on. I just got fitted into P790 but I went in thinking I’d like to take the P770 home. For my game, it’s better to have the distance and forgiveness because I usually aim for the middle of the green

I've got a fitted set been hitting about a month now. Absolutely amazing irons. Very forgiving I've literally had 1 errant shot in 40 rounds with them. Yes I play often. Mine are 2 Up 1° Strong Loft. In fact the AW is so good I'm switching up taking the 54 and 58° out. Adding the HI Toe 56 and the P790 2 UDI. 5 - AW is the set I ordered. Use AW for pitch and roll 56 for flop shots. 2 I need for when I need to keep it low either for rescue or long par 3 etc

Well done best review ever i am 70 and play off 6 i currently use Wilson v6 irons i have lost distance on my irons in the last few years these p 790 clubs may be the answer Best regards Willie

Gary I love my TM3 wedges, I have the 50, 54, & 58. I had the SM8s earlier this year buy traded them in for the TM3s.

Nice review. I have the original 2 iron and it’s a rocket. Personally don’t get the comments about less workability. Tried mates “power irons” in the past and can move it both ways just as much as my own Srixon irons. This is 100% the best review of the P790 out there..on course testing with honest feedback for the average club golfer. Well done. My only concern with these irons is distance control. I have plenty of speed so gapping and tweaking the lofts ( which mess with the bounce and offset) could be an issue? i swing a 7i at 88-90mph and with a 32 degree 7i, I get about 165 carry. if I'm hitting a 26 degree P790 6i 190+/- thats a pretty big gap issue.

Thanks Jason. You are unlikely to find any issues with distance control with the P790. TaylorMade has done a great job elimination those 'hot ones' with this latest model. Gapping wise you'll also be absolutely fine. Every iron does its job very well. Where you may need to look at your gapping is from the PW to the next wedges in your set. DC

If I was to put a set of P790s in the bag I would probably have to reassess my wedge gapping. The 790s are more powerful than my current iron so would maybe need to look at adding a stronger gap wedge to my set up. Gapping to your wedges is something you should always consider when changing your irons. DC

I just recently started playing again after a 20 year hiatus from the game. I played regularly throughout my childhood all the way up to my 40's. I'm 64 now and I acquired a set of TM SIM 2 Max irons. I hit them well but I miss the crisp feel of a more traditional head. The SIMs feel a little mushy to me. Right now I would say I am 10 to 14 handicapper, but in my prime I was a 5. Do think it would be a good idea to switch to the P790's or should I leave well enough alone?

I've been thinking about this for a while. Currently play ping i210 and really like them. I hit them good but just feel as though I'm leaving something out with the extra forgiveness available. I don't really see and down side to going to a p790 or 770

If you are considering changing irons then both the P790 and P770 are great options. The P770 and i210 will be fairly similar on the forgiveness scale, but the 790 will deliver more speed and forgiveness for you most likely. As always, get fitted and go with what works for you best. DC

They are comparable yes. Both irons deliver good levels of distance and forgiveness to go along with their better player's looks and feel. My advice would be to give both a bash for yourself and see which one you prefer. Then make sure to get fitted. DC

Fantastic video, what shaft was in the P790? Dynamic Gold 105 stiff? Looks like you have KBS C Taper on your irons but noticed you were still striping the ball with the standard stock shaft

I use the C-Taper 130 X. The DG 105 stiff was a bit on the light side for what I'm used but was still delivering good results. DC

I've tried the ZX7 and loved them. Srixon have a real knack for producing great forged player's irons. So many good choices out there at the moment. DC

Do you think the P770 is better for feel and touch in the PW and GW ? Better turf interaction?

The P770, with its narrower sole, does offer slightly better feel and turf interaction when compared to the P790. Both feel great though. DC

Thanks Mark. I have indeed. I would say the JPX921 HM PRO is a little more towards the game-improvement side of things. Both are powerful irons that offer plenty of distance, but the 921 HM Pro is probably a bit more forgiving than the P790. Where the 790 really has the edge is in looks and feel, catering more to the better player. Both great options and if you are considering sticking a set in your bag go and test them for yourself. And get fitted. DC

The who needs workability comment is spot on. We don't hit the centre of the club 90% of the time.

The P790 and T200 both fall into the player's distance iron category and offer similar performance benefits to go along with their sharp aesthetics and pleasing feel. I haven't had the chance to test both side-by-side yet, but fully expect them to be very closely matched. DC

Both are brilliant irons, but personally, I would opt for the P770s out of the two options. The thinner topline and slightly less offset suit my eye a little better, while still offering solid levels of distance and forgiveness. DC
