​@abw48 Nope. It is before the Independence that culture already existed. That culture was well known throughout the history of the malay archipelago. The major difference between Malaysia and neighboring countries is that Malaysia's fundamental independence are based on integration of the races and not assimilation (Indonesia as an example). Therefore, respect each other cultures, languages, religions etc and abide the constitution. That is why Malaysia is known with the slogan 'Malaysia Truely Asia'.

1. Don’t condemn/provoke anything related to ‘3R’ (Religion, Race & Royal). 2. Kelantan & Terengganu states are most islamic (each state has their own islamic laws & it’s mostly applied to Malays) compared other states. So, wear modesty (cover up from shoulders downward knees) is a pleasant behaviour to Terengganu & Kelantan people eyes. But locals wouldn’t force tourists to follow that as locals understand foreigners might not informed about locals way of modesty wearings. 3. Don’t be too loud/condemning when an unexpected issue happens in public because most Malaysians are easily triggered. They’re prefer ‘slow-talk’ (polite negotiations) approach or just go through legal procedures. Karens might not suitable to live in Malaysia 🙃

Terengganu isn't that strict. I don't even know what kinda "own islamic law" we have and I live here. LOL the stereotype is crazy. we're not like kelantan. the only reason we're considered "most islamic" is because the population is over 90% malay. other states will be islamic as well if they have the same demographic.

Point 3 is debatable. Malaysian some times can be loud and obnoxious especially if there's a big argument. we ain't timid like the east asian but not as straight forward as the americans. we're in between

yes sir, common dress code for malaysian, cover from shoulder to knee. dont wear too much revealing when in public area. we really appreciate that. 😁 try to receive or give something with right hand only.

Hi Chai, it's alright to show affection when meeting a close friend here in Malaysia, just know your boundaries. Generally, it's alright to dress up as you wish, just don't go overboard to show respect to the locals. That applies to public areas only. But if you are in a public bar, pub or a dance club, you can dress as little as you can. You can also show-off how highly affection that you are for the public to view. There are places that are exceptional.

in malaysia, kelantan is the most conservative with their own state rules but i've seen many western backpackers there with sleeveless shirt and short,nobody care because they know you're tourist but of course anywhere you go common sense is very important,without common sense you should not travel for example if you go to mexico don't talk bad about cartel..

I find Malaysia a more civilised society than the west. Malaysia is a place where nothing makes sense, the longer you stay you begin to realise that it all makes sense and where you come from makes no sense I love the culture that alcohol is not required to have a great time where as good food, family and friendship is is the priority. Come here, relax, be courteous and respectful, it’s a cultural paradise

Great topic and I reckon the formatting/editing was awesome Chai. Great experiment and it worked well. Regarding the topic, I think it is a great idea to get it first hand from the locals what a tourist needs to do and also not to do to respect the culture especially in a SE Asian country which is so multi cultural in the first place. As expected the primary things to avoid for any discussion are Politics and Religion and the old saying is to treat those as you would expect them to treat you. Plenty of good tips there to follow as well. Brilliant work champ!! Keep them coming mate!!

In terms of kissing, if it’s a pat on the cheek or a quick kiss on the mouth in KL, I really don’t think it’s a problem. That’s me speaking as a Malaysian but if one do the whole French kissing thing in public, that would be frowned upon. I think it’s also a peculiar sight in some western countries too eg Australia, UK etc

Malaysia has to continue to engage in race & religious discussion, we cannot avoid it, it is an elephant in the room. We also need a harmony law on race & religion which we do not have. It has to be progressive discussion. Recently about who is the champion of corruption, that is the wrong path for argument. Each blaming each other for the championship.

I think kissing is ok in Malaysia, but don’t over do it. Wearing singlet is ok too, depends on where you go, KL is more open or Sabah and Sarawak. But other places in Peninsular - village might be disrespect. Talking about religion, depends, getting to know about the religion is ok, but badmouth about it is not good. If i see the video people can have different opinion on things, some say can some say no, but i guess need to learn the basic things, not over do, respect others, etc. if you stay longer here then you know how it work in different area. So don’t stressed out about it. 😊

Good question. Eating food with your left had is a no go because people use this hand to wipe after going to the toilet. Also if someone is handing you something it’s better to receive it with your right hand. With this been said, if you look foreign people would not easily get offended by it :) also pointing with your point fingers is not polite (either hands). Most people point with their thumb over here. I hope it helps 🏆

So if you are born from a particular ethnicity you must be able to preserve your cultural identity. Besides, Malays, Chinese & Indians are phenotypically different from each other, so it's important to acknowledge our differences so that we can embrace the differences & find similarities. In term of clothing, majority Malaysians are still offended to people over-exposing themselves (dress-wise), but out of respect most will just look away. In Malaysia we believe in mutual respect. You respect us, we respect you. Think of the children - what's the point of avoiding your children watching xx galleries on the internet when they can see it walking and jiggling around KL. No brainer.

Most female foreigners do not know, it is a no no for braless. They prefer walking around braless under their clothes which is a norm in their country but not in Malaysia. Braless is frowned upon but there exception if you go to a club, disco, bar, pub, etc.

Malaysia is family culture.. children are everywhere.. here we take them even going shopping for groceries... So we dont want them to expose to something they are not suppose to as a child like french kissing or women's boobs..

Wear singlet and short pants absolutly no problem in malaysia. Wearing bikini in supermarket or pasar malam is something not allowed.. wearing bikini at the beach, no problemo!..

Avoid 3R: 1.Royalty 2.Religion. 3.Race.

Men don't wear tight (stretch trousers) without underwear.

You can't wear shorts and singlets walking around in east coast of West M'sia especially Kelantan, Trengganu let alone bikinis for ladies. You will get into trouble with syariah law (Muslim law). You can't eat pork, drink beer in front of Muslim people as many westerners are not aware of. The religious law is very much stricter than in the middle east. There's not really democratic value to talk about religion, politic, race to incite discontent that can lead you in detention under internal security act section bla bla bla like in the West. Also if you are courting with someone in a public place, you can be searched and even charged under syariah law if one party is a Muslim.

Nah, you don’t get arrested for everything about that. We have lgbtq community in Malaysia. They do exist though they are frowned upon. As long as you keep it to yourself and don’t shove your sexual identity into anyone’s throat, it’s fine. If you try to make it a big human right issue and trying to be a social justice warrior harping about it on the street, you’d most likely end up in jail.

It is very personal. Some Muslim may complain but majority of Muslim in KL should be fine with it. Just use common sense and observe what the local do will help.

@@scchua1720 so you still think any Malay/ Muslims would complain if you drink beers... When is that last happened...? 1950s ?
