You asked the people you spoke with about good and bad experiences. For me, the best thing was meeting up with several friends in Georgetown including one who was born and raised there but now a US citizen. We met his family and celebrated his birthday. My worst experience was getting food poisoning from a restaurant in Terengganu. I ate all kinds of street food with no problem.

There are many aspects of being in Malaysia as both a tourist and a year's attempt at living here that I like - language, multi-culturalism (of sorts), multiple cuisines, good inter-city bus system, friendly people, ability to actually make local friends (very different than Thailand), proximity to Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, modest cost, etc. But the one negative factor that caused me to close down my apartment and leave was a deal-breaker: the very loud, ugly voice and 365 days per year electronic pre-dawn call to Muslim prayer of the local surau. I loathe the interrelationship between politics and religion here, of a chauvanistic supremacist mentality in action. By law there has to be these preachy announcements in every housing areas even where few Muslims live. I found it in principal and practice unforgivable. So, I left. I have spent extended periods of time in Turkey (where the azan is sweet) and Indonesia (where the Islam is softer somehow). I refused to accept the Malaysian government pushing Islam. Dubai and Bangladesh are better for non-Muslims. And it has very little to do with the man in the street, of any religion. I find the Malaysian brand of political Islam to be arrogant.

You must be has Islamophobia sentiment. It's okay if you go. You don't understand that Malay and Muslims at Malaysia play the biggest roles in making what Malaysia today.Malay Muslims kind hearted, good relationships and very high tolerance to other races, culturals, foods, religions and others makes example to other races that living here to do the same to other races. You can see how Muslims were discriminate and be killed at india and china. It's never happen here. So what we need only to respects our culture and Islam. If you can't to respect us, just don't stay here.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. You are half correct - in fact, I don't have a problem with Muslims, nor the Malay people. I have a problem with Islam. I have read the Koran and many Hadiths. I am now reading the Sira. I do not like 95% of what I discover. But in large part it is the Islamicness of the government of Malaysia that I like even less than the religion. BTW, I am not saying that Islam shouldn't be political, that this is a betrayal of the teachings of its Messenger. Islam is political in its very nature. So Malaysian Islamic policies are authentic (this doesn't mean I approve, endorse or encourage them). Muhammed was a secular as well as a religious leader. Also military and business leader. Indonesia and Turkey are less Islamic - so I prefer them. But this aside. Perhaps you can tell me why in a small predominantly Chinese Town in Johor the muzzein begins his cries at 05:40, takes a few breaks then cranks up the volume at 05:50 and continues until 06:03. Then he starts at 06:09 until 06:14. Fajr (first prayer of the morning) is at 06:09 according to Islamic sources. Is this normal?

@@adadisini2898 I appreciate this dialogue. I think it is important to recognize that Malaysia, while yes, being predominantly Muslim, is NOT the Middle East or South Asia. Like Indonesia (largest Muslim population in the world) Malaysia is Southeast Asia, so (Malays might not always like this) its culture, and this includes its religion and sultanate traditions is infuenced by Hinduism. The climate and history is different than Afghanistan and Turkey. While sharing much, there is not a monolithic 'Muslim culture'. Likewise, Bosnia is not KSA. So while I find Malaysia unsuitable for myself (I am a Buddhist- leaning secular person who prefers Theravada lands) I very much like dealing with Malays - by and large a warm, family-oriented, easy to get along with people. Malaysia is not intense, aggressively intellectual and noisy like India. But everywhere has its pluses and minuses. Simply put, Malaysia is not the place for me. Just the azan and the government is too much for me.

In general, Malaysians, like those in other Southeast Asian countries, seem to be fairly amiable people. We are accustomed to seeing foreigners in our country. Unless they need our aid, we usually let them enjoy our country on their own. In that case, we would be more than pleased to assist them. Alternatively, we worry that we can be perceived as invading their privacy or stirring up unwarranted suspicion on their part. Yet, we extend a warm welcome to all visitors and expatriates alike, and we encourage them to get to know us as civilised people who can make good friends with them especially when they are in our country.
