Do NOT Upgrade Your iMac Pro!

Ғылым және технология

Okay, the title is clickbait but it is important for us to see the downsides of upgrading. I guess I am happy to show that, even though I would rather have not broken the iMac....
If you want the cpu is an intel xeon 2191-b
Buy it on eBay.
Original price of $5,000 + $2499 for the upgraded CPU (I have proof down below)
In all seriousness, if you have any suggestions I am all ears, literally I have huge ears compared to my bald head now.
Thanks as always for watching!

Props to you for uploading a “failed” attempt at this project man. Other KZreadrs doing it successfully gives the layman the misconception that it’s really easy and a no-brainer to self-upgrade. Your video brings me back down to earth, so I appreciate you! Love your vids

I appreciate it! Yeah I would have preferred to obviously get the computer working, but I am not going to hide behind the fact that I messed up and broke it. Hopefully I save 1 or 2 iMac Pro's from the same fate as mine. Thank you for taking the time to watch!

A new 5k screen is $400, I mean. I would use a magnifying glass and look at the ports, maybe there is a piece of the old connector stuck in it.

I'm not entirely sure how the performance of each machine compares off the top of my head, but you might be better off getting an adapter board to turn the iMac screen into an external monitor and use it with a Mac Mini. If you strip the internals of the iMac and remove the Mac Mini from it's shell, you might be able to even fit it inside the iMac if you want to preserve the all-in-one aesthetic.

Great idea! I actually ordered a board off of eBay last night! This iMac isn't dead just yet! Well the internals are kind of toast

Hey dude, you're not alone in this, although I didn't break a imac pro, i did break a maxxed out 2015 retina 5k, I was repasting the cpu and my microfibre cloth landed on the socket with the pins and bent a bunch of them, after tediously bending them back, the system boots, and will install mac os, but once installed it hangs when booting into the system, i keep getting some kernal error, either way I have 3 others so i haven't had a chance or desire to tinker again. Do not get 2015 or earlier, they have issues with display ghosting as they age, my 2017 has also started showing signs. As you said, the later, the better. Also if you still have the mainboard and wanted to use it what you could do to continue using the internals of this computer if you really wanted, Opencore has an option for disabling firmware throttling caused by missing display etc, you may be able to use one of the thunderbolt outputs and then display input back into the card. Then you would have an imac pro with secondary display input! which I don't think anyone has done before

I bought one of these, and yes it’s a fantastic deal. I picked mine up on eBay for 1400 with 14 core, and was thinking of upgrading the RAM…but no, I’ll just enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for putting out this video. It’s a shame this thing is so finicky. I think the best route for anyone purchasing one of these is to pick one up as is and maybe hunt one down with upgrades already offered. You were right though, overall it’s a really nice setup. I’m really happy with it.

You should bring it to a micro solderer and they should be able to put a new port on the motherboard

  • @archytys
    @archytys3 ай бұрын

If the connector on the motherboard is broken It might be possible to replace it with some micro soldering (Louis Rossman is known for this in the us), but It might not be worth it, it might be expensive and it might not solve the issue. Same thing if there's an issue with the screen itself, I don't want to be pessimistic but overall I don't know if the repairs are worth it. These are just assumptions, everything might not be lost, something can maybe be done for cheap, idk. Sorry for that happening to you. It's as well on the other side, "cool" to see these types of videos, your channel seems very authentic and qualitative, glad I stumbled upon it!

I’m hoping this iMac’s arc isn’t done. Need to see a redemption where the port is replaced and we get to see an ultimate iMac Pro! But, I think it’s totally understandable if that requires either extreme skill or is prohibitively expensive. Good luck-either way I’m glad I found your channel!

Good luck selling it for parts. I turned a perfectly working 2015 27" retina iMac into a 5K monitor using a third party driver board from AliExpress. The monitor works great, but I've had the old iMac logic board on ebay for almost a month now with no bites. I just dropped the price this week and no takers yet. I still have to list the RAM and speakers and fan assembly, but not holding out a lot of hope in recouping much.

I once ruined my Dell XPS notebook in a very unnecessary way, just to impatient, exited, wanted to see it's working before closing everything and a shorted something while testing and the XPS was dead forever. The only "good" thing was, it was a very disappointing "high-end device" from the beginning with a lot of QM issues and questionable design decisions by Dell.

Do you enjoy torturing yourself Scott? It's an Apple product, they designed these thing to basically be not user serviceable. Just assume it's disposable tech and nothing is user replaceable, Apple thinks of their products like that and have been doing everything they can to make it reality. It's why I don't have any Apple computers and the only Apple products I own are disposable.
