Thanks for making this video. I've been around cars, especially Mustangs all my life. I'm one of your older viewers and have seen all kinds of BS sellers out there. Got taken myself when I bought a rusted out POS 77 Datsun 280Z back in the 90's. Craigslist and Marketplace are the worst. I read some of the listings and laugh they're so bad. You're right about some modifications. I want to see receipts.

Same thing happened to me when I got my first car. Didn't know enough about them to even be thinking of buying one at the time. So much wrong with the car that a pro would've known to leave it where it was. I ended up driving almost 60 miles home with wood screws holding in the right upper torque box. Thing was a death trap and that dude knew good and well what he was selling to me. You live and learn though and by God's grace I made it home without incident.

Look @ the Torque boxes (rear) are the twisted up from drag racing? Look for VIN stickers on the body panels, firewall, trunk area. Inspect the uni-body for accident damage/repair. Inspect the shock towers in the engine bay. If they are rusted, be prepared to dump a ton of money into it to repair those, or just walk away from the car.

I took a pretty big risk buying my first foxbody recently. I found a 87 with a fully built 302, 72mm turbo, built C4 trans, and a bunch of other nice stuff done to the car for only 9k! I know nothing about these engines or car in general so i took the risk and bought it and its been driving great for 2 months now.

  • @chrisbuff6584

I always give a quick "guide" when asked what to look for. Rust. Floor pans, strut towers, spare tire area, hatch mount area, sun roof, and battery area. Damage. Radiator support and bay area. Look for bends, breaks, and dents that would indicate front end damage. Take a magnet and a thin cloth. Check your quarter panels for Bondo. Bondo will alter the magnets attraction strength. You can also use the tap method and listen for a deeper tone in the areas. Torque boxes for rust and stress cracks. Basically crawl all over the thing. The single most important advice I give is either try to find a good solid base roller or a factory engine car. There is far too much gray areas when dealing with engines and transmissions. Save yourself some trouble and either get a solid roller or a stock 302 and budget to rebuild. These cars are already inflated way beyond reason in price. A good solid buildable stock version should not cost 10k. I see garbage piles that are priced at 5k. People be trippin on these insane prices. I have a factory 79 V8 Cobra and even I know the prices on them are over inflated......and I WANT it to be a Barret Jackson priced car lol!

It happen to be a 4 cylinder car with a V8 swap that had metal shavings in the oil, a worn out tranny, worn out 90 rear end, bad ECU and a lot of other crap. Paid 11K for a car with many problems. Almost the same story, down to the car…88 GT t-top. It’s been sitting at my nephews, haven’t pulled the carpet up to look, but the pans look solid from below. I did it backwards which was completely my fault, found out the miles were higher than listed after I bought it. I just figured a running, driving, manual, t-top GT was worth 5k at the very least. Older fella who thought it was a rocket lol don’t really think he was out to burn anyone.

Been burned before and it does suck. Bought a truck from a family friend and 3 days later engine blew. Then found several other things that were wrong. Spent thousands for repairs and sold it for a lot less than I had invested to just be rid of it. Complete nightmare for me but new owner got a book of receipts and documentation of all repairs. I just couldn’t enjoy it enough to keep it.

The number one thing I will always say about a Fox body is this unless it is documented low mileage and come from a collector it has been beat on probably more times than you can count probably around 4 owners if your lucky and remember the odometer probably doesn't have the 1000,000 mark so always assume it has what it says plus 100,000 see proof before buying like the man said no proof dollars get lower take it or leave it. I have seen these cars going for $20K even $30K I say unless it says saleen or SVO and is documented that it is not worth it. Clean average price I say is around $12 to $18K depending on mileage.

So damn true, take someone you trust, or do your homework, take a light, look under the car, looks at door jams there are a lot of hidden rust/rot just by looking around wheel and pulling wheel liner back, doesn't matter if it has fresh paint, it might be hiding things.

Thanks for sharing this. Anyone spending more than a couple of grand on a car HAS to get it checked out by a good, independent shop unless you have a lot of experience and know your way around cars. At that price point, a couple of hundred dollars more spent vetting that car would have saved him in the long run. Poor guy. That being said, I know you said you wouldn't reveal the source, but please do us a public service and out this predator. Imagine if it were your kid....

Also if the car is running when you arrive, something is wrong. He had to jump it, or worse, push start it. Could just be out of tune, but maybe the ring gear on the flywheel is chewed up, starter is lunched, etc. Even if its just warmed up, its suspect. If you can't cold start it, walk away.

Ask for fresh new pictures of stuff that’s not posted, if they are ask for a live one. Most of the time they can be pretty quick if it’s theirs. I also let them know this isn’t our first, husbands a mechanic and we restore them. That helps people know we have an idea of what we’re looking at. Maybe you should do one for buying cars off a website and show some ads as well.

You can get a 4.10 gear for a 8.8" thiugh. 4.11 no, but one digit could be a mistake. Best advice i can give is if you don't knoe what your doing bring someone with another set of eyes. Eyes on the car is best thing can do. Rust, top strut mounts, lower rad supports, boot floor, rear frame rails, torque boxes...you know the score. And panel gaps is my pet go to. Dont be blinged by fresh paint on a turd. If the panels, and multiple panels, door lines, bonnet lines dont line up that's red red red. Id rather a dented up workhorse that's honest with factory panel gaps and no rust rot out. Good luck peeps

#6 When a seller has a proper car for a proper price he doesn't have to sell you anything..... He throws the keys at you and lets you poke around it all you want, and doesn't have a long winded story for any suspicious thing you find. All the best cars I ever bought the seller didn't have overly wordy used car salesman responses and let me take all the time needed to inspect the vehicle. And particularly didn't care if I bought it or not, because he knew someone lucky was going to get it. Now I'm not saying a tight lipped person that "doesn't know anything" about the car, because those sellers know it's got issues but hold the truth. Omission of info is the same as lying. Happy hunting!

This isn't new. For all time, people have been selling vehicles that have major issues. Used car lots are the worst. People don't just trade in their vehicle if nothing is wrong with it. I'd say 90% of people trade in because of an issue, and they'd rather just get another vehicle. It's also hard for the honest guy to pull what a good car is worth because so many people screw others. I've walked away from so many vehicles that people claim all it needs is "***." If it's that simple, they'd fix it. I haven't found a good deal lately at all. Marketplace, cl, all full of scams. It's bad when you ask a good price for a good car, and everyone thinks something is wrong. "Ran when parked." These ads drive me nuts. If it ran when parked, why was it parked? Trans go out? Overheating? I'm just tired of it all. The whole system is a scam now.

Just needs a fuel pump! Friend got taken on eBay. Car looked decent close enough to go look at it. No ac compressor but had cam and ported heads new clutch 3.73’s etc. Only real stuff was shorties stock H with cats removed and turndowns. Pump didn’t run because it was straight wired to ignition switch to pump relay. They pulled relay so the knocking engine couldn’t be heard! Lucky he only paid $3k.

If I'm paying 10k for a foxbody it better already be restored. You can buy a mint for 10.

Caleb, I get the subtle rage over deceptive people. The best you can do is lots of research and/or bring an expert along to see the car before purchase. The silver lining is that the buyer will have to do the hard work of fixing the car...and will learn a ton in the process. It sucks but anything can be fixed.
