Why is EVERYONE Buying a FOX BODY Mustang?

Ойын-сауық

Most guys had a girl as their first love, for me it was the Foxbody Mustang.
Nothing sounds like a Foxbody 5.0.. and you could hear this music all over Miami- they were in every corner… all modified too! In today’s Miami, the Foxbody has been replaced by Lambos & Ferrarraas everywhere. But many… still keep Foxbody’s as their all time favorite ride. ROLLIN IN MY 5.0!

Just had to add I miss the days when we had our Z28, Trans Am, Mustang rivalries in the high school parking lots. The cars were 10+ years old then (my Camaro was closer to 20 since it was a second generation). One guy had a BEAUTIFUL Fox body mustang with 5 speed, chrome pony wheels, a wicked exhaust and this crazy purple metallic paint job. Well, one day someone called it “The Barney Car” and the name Stuck 🤣

I bought my 340 high compression 1970 Duster for $3k cash with only 50k miles on it. Headers, traction, L60 tires. That was the going price back then. Yeah I totaled it but pulled the engine/trans and bought another 6 cylinder and did a swap. Cars (and gas) were a lot cheaper plus we had 4 local drag strips! Atco, Englishtown, Maple grove and Cecil County. I luv the F body stang but I'm older now so drive the gentlemen's s550, more refined.

I own a '85 Mercury Capri RS, a '86 Mustang GT, a '91 LX, and a '93 GT. I'm an old fart, they're all vehicles I bought for a grand or 2 in the late 90s through the mid 2000s. It's absolutely insane to see what people pay for these things now days... I remember being able to buy entire parts cars for 300-500 bucks that were complete enough to drive home. Between myself and my circle of friends back then there was probably never less then 20 of these things sitting around at any given time, in back yards and storage units and whatnot. Never had to look too hard to find parts. Was a couple really good years there where it seemed like everyone had a buddy who just went and got a 03/04 Cobra (believe it or not those were like $12-15k when they were 2 or 3 years old) and was looking to unload all their foxbody and 302/351 stuff for a case of beer and a handshake.

I got an 1986 for $1500 3-1/2 years ago. It was my friends and I believe I'm roughly the 3rd or 4th owner. It was sitting since 2006. Didn't start, breaks were a little seize, 2 tires were flat. It took $400 to get it running (fuel pump, fuel filter, battery and cables, oil change, while I'm at it fuel tank gaskets and spark plugs). Engine was shaking a lot because of the engine mounts falling apart. While I was at it (again..) I spent another $500 for valve cover and oil pan gaskets, oil pump, rear main, clutch, throwout and pilot bearings, pivot ball and fork. Everything seemed original and was seeping oil. Currently trying to figure out why it's still shaking once it idles down. Tested the vacuum tree last night with a harbor freight hand pump, blocked off the AC (not hooked up) but didn't get a chance to start it. Will try wires next if the vacuum lines aren't the problem. Once I save up for some tires, I'll be driving it around, even if it does keep shaking.

The Ford 302 is one of the best engines in Detroit history. They're so very easy to work on. They put down a lot of power for their size. The 1987-1991 period is my favorite timeline of the Fox Body. They are such amazing cars to have fun with and shoot down a straightaway. They are very light, giving them an excellent power-to-weight ratio. The sound of the exhaust on the Fox Body 5.0 is my favorite exhaust note, esp when it comes to high revving manuals, just beating a Hellcat exhaust note. I could just imagine cruising in a Fox Body convertible while playing Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Van Halen songs, along with some others like Addicted To Love, Give Me All Your Lovin, Rockin Down The Highway, Nothin But A Good Time, and Hip To Be Square.

I have gone through them all, and as a youngster a lot of the older 70's and 80's muscle cars. Only one stands out over the rest an 89 Gt 5.0. I beat on that car harder than any other car I owned, by a huge margin, dumping clutches regularly at 5-6k, roasting new tires to bald in cul de sacs spinning till you couldn't see outside from smoke, hard street running at high speeds and cooking off brakes till she barely stopped, in all of this, all she ever needed was regular maintenance, and she was a stocker, save mass air and exhaust, NOTHING ever broke....that's "why"

I remember the F-body/Fox body street fights back in the day. Stock for stock the 350 TPI had it’s hands full with a 5.0. Add to that how the 5.0 responded to mods compared to the TPI, they had the F-bods number for a long time. It wasn’t until the LT1 came around in ‘93 that the tables turned. Before ‘93, if I was smart, I would’ve gone with a turbo Buick or the turbo T/A. In those days though, there was something emasculating about not having a V8, even though the Monte SS with the 305 was sucking wind and seconds slower compared to the GN. Anyone man enough to drive the Buick was owning the streets and the strip.

Eventually we found a Calypso Coral convertible. The owner said it was painted because the paint was too perfect (it wasn't) it also made a horrible noise with the engine running. I quietly stuck my hand behind the engine and found a factory handle they used to put the engine in the car. The EGR pipe had broken and was letting the exhaust into the air making the racket. I wispered to by buddy to act calm. $3400. I went to high school in the 80s. People had a lot of shtbx GMs and everybody hated Ford because they produced slow cars during the 70s. Being 17 in 1987, I didn't have the money to buy a new fuel injected Mustang. So I bought a 1981 six cylinder. Put an 87 GT spoiler on it, full 86 GT interior in it, 15 inch rims, painted the chrome trim black. Feel sad for me? Don't. 351W with ported heads, crane fireball camshaft, crane variable duration lifters, ported Edelbrock intake, solid engine mounts, 750 Holley, MSD ignition, exhaust pipes never passed the axle. FMX transmission with shift kit. I brought it to school and destroyed everything. Then I went to other schools to show them the rumour was true. Then in one of the hottest racing spots, I gave a GN 3 car lengths and took them back and laid a beating on it. I passed a Beaumont racing a Camaro using the oncoming lane, pulled in front and kept going. Nobody wanted to brag unless I wasn't there. Within the same year, I brought a 13:1 460ci big block stuffed into a 1980 Cobra. Offenhauser, Isky, big headers, ported heads etc It paints black stripes at highway speeds. Nobody wanted to race anymore.

It's incredibly informative & entertaining, & I totally enjoyed it, I learned so much about it, & I am a fanboy par excellence, I owned an '88 & regret selling it, I will, however, start to collect every special Fox body & tuner version like Saleen & the rest of them, because it's the BEST Car in my world. Anyway fantastic review, I give it 15 out of 10.

You are right and if you have a lightened stripper lx coupe you can be well under 3k lbs. That is enough to make a solid hci setup quick with a gear, tire and a driver behind the wheel. People these days judge everything off hp what matters is average power and torque as well as gearing and power to weight plus the driver. Simply watching peak hp and tq is only a small part of it but that is what everyone hyperfocuses on today.

I wouldn't look at the airbox for a Ford motorsport sticker because it's easy just to stick the original back on. Do you want to check the door frames whether or not the doors shut properly the torque boxes underneath the car , etc. I not worry about the engine because you could drop in a long block for cheap. Or better build one. One modification to look for that a positive is subframe connectors, especially on convertibles as a flexes a bit ridiculous on them. So if the frames were installed back in the 90s - all the better. Save 30 years of flex. Unless you're looking to step into a fully built car, I avoid most unless they've got complete build sheets, and you know who did the work . The weakest part of the engine is the two bolt main. Anything over 500 wheel horsepower and you're asking for a crack block. It's not a matter of if it's a matter of when as a number goes above 500. The 38 cars I've owned my 1990 GT to this day is still my favorite car. Far more so than any mustang that came later (and I've owned eight total). The hatchback is what makes it. I used to be a fit 26 foot two surfboards and an X pattern with the backseats down and have it not in fringe at all on the driver or passenger seat at 6'3". As far as modifications go or at least your first ones - gears, full exhaust, CAI and then save up for a supercharger. Whipple is going to be your best bet particularly on the street. That is a set up. You can run every day and never worry about. Add HC intake, new valve, etc. in combination with the above is the point everybody ends up wanting to sell the car six months later. Mostly because when you get to that power level stuff starts breaking. Great car I'd love to buy another one if I could find a clean GT or LX 5.0 . I miss this simplicity of it. Radio Speedo, and no nanny controls.

You can get 300+ with ported explorer heads and intake and a decent cam plus headers and exhaust. I'm talking wheel hp too with even higher torque. That is enough to make them quick. For anyone getting an exhaust for a foxbody, don't get blowmasters. The drone like no other. Worst mufflers you can get, period. When I got my 2nd foxbody, it had blowmaster 40s, I got it in San Diego and drive it to LA... My brother was waiting for me with my ramps because I called him and told em I was tired of the drone 30min into the drive home. Cut those turds off before the exhaust cooled off and straight to the bin they went. Get an absorption style muffler like a magnaflow or borla and avoid anything chambered. Those things were only popular back then because they were the cheapest option muffler shops had on hand.

  • @HernanSpeed

God i hate that name, ha ha ha,ill get used to it one of these days,i grew up around these cars and was modifying them when most of the people on KZread were wearing short pants,we never called them Foxbodies back then, the Foxbody platform was used on a ton of cars Ford made,Ford used the Panther platform on a multitude of cars, we dont call Crown Victoria Panthers do we? I own 2 of these cars, a 89 and a 91,my 91 is a semidaily,i drive it year round, they are some of the best cars ever made, easy to work on and the aftermarket for them is insane, they are great cars for a father and son to have a project together to restore etc, they are fast (by old standards) and fun, major bang for your buck. I f you are looking for one stay away from Convertibles, they are a heap of fun but unless you have a place to keep it they get broken into constantly like any convertible, if you have a house with a garage you'll be fine , lots of jealous folks out there that love to take a knife to the top and they are heavier too (for those people that like to dog these cars constantly) but if you are looking for a nice cruiser, convertibles are it and if you enjoy compliments you'll get lots with these cars, people love them, everyone has a story about them, how they went to senior prom in one back in the olden days or how they owned one but totaled it in a month etc,lol I f you are looking for a Foxbody (there i said it) and you find one that hasn't been hacked and abused to death for a good price, get it without hesitation, they will continue to climb in price,i mean dont get it as a investment unless its a 93 Cobra /R with low miles, get it to enjoy it and have fun with it and drive it,thats what they like the most, treat it right and it will give you back enjoyment in spades.

Yeah around these parts and I’m going back 26+ years now, we all ripped off the flows and went Mac. Hell even today you can’t hardly touch Mac. You see Mac on marketplace for sale you gotta jump on them fast and fork over that fat cash to score some. Wish they was still in business, someone needs to bring them back. All 3 of my fox cars have full Mac on them. I currently have a 87 gt vert, an 89 gt vert, and a 87 gt ttop hatch. I’m one of the OG fox guys from way back in the day in my area.
