CAMARO IROC Z - Ultimate 80’s Muscle Car?

Ойын-сауық

Some of these third gen Camaros are selling for over $100K! Yeap! And most nice IROC Z28’s are selling for more than $50k....regularly. The market has changed on the F-Body's and is about time. -My dad always had a Camaro, they remind me of him.

Agreed ! What ever you do don’t engine swap or modify in any way. You’ll lose a lot of money if you do…as I found out the hard way years ago when I attempted that on one I had. Sold it for a big loss on my “investment” I put into it. Only thing I’d recommend to add if you have to is a quality experience stainless steel T-304 Exhaust system to open up its breathing a little. They look better also but that’s it! Maybe remove the cat also. So true about finding parts. I must have spent 10’s of thousands of dollars on N.O.S new parts.

I'm around these 3rd gen f-bodys quite often, I see people changing parts when they shouldn't. When these cars came out there wasn't anything better looking on the road, i say leave them be or you'll never get the experience of what these cars were like when new. The nicest 3rd gens are the ones that aren't modified.

@@HernanSpeed I'm ok with changing stuff, when it comes to modifying a classic car sometimes people go a little overboard and many times it's for the wrong reasons. Sometimes people do things to their cars just because they can, for example let's use a bone stock 1967 Chevelle SS 396. Unfortunately, I've seen someone install a Dakota digital dash, fuel injection or rear disc brakes. I think that kind of stuff takes away from the car, Sometimes it's better to just leave it alone. Here's another example, I have a few old Schwinn Stingrays muscle bikes. They're heavy bikes for today's standards, I could probably make them lighter by throwing some newer aluminum parts at them or I could put a digital speedo on in place of the mechanical one to make it more modern. You get what I'm saying.

@@HernanSpeedThis is only my opinion, let's use a 3rd gen. I have one now and I've had a bunch of them over the years, Z28's and T/As. I changed the radio & exhaust on everyone of them, driving on the highway with the T-tops out and a stock Delco don't really mix. I could barely hear the radio, I like music too much. I did that and even a little more to the car I have now, I updated the suspension with some pretty decent stuff. Even so the car still looks very stock, it just drives and sounds better.

Man loved seeing your take on the 3rd Gen F- Body. You are very correct. 10 years ago I would see the occasional tired one driving around. But now you never see them anymore. I went to Sweden then saw more 80’s cars like F-Bodies driving around on the perfect roads they have like you said they are great at cornering! Which is why I have 3 Mint like new low milage 82’ Trans Am’s all black. Love them ! In addition a 92’ Firebird convertible. There is a difference in the structural rigidity just like you said. More comfortable and less shake. I never saw that much a difference in going with a Camaro so just built up my Firebird collection. Literally everyone stares when I drive them and loves them! Also have a 77’ Bandit T/A. Can’t believe you had a Yellow IROC-Z Camaro - for free! You were crazy to sell it. Now please do the Trans Am video 🙏🏻 and please include your wife. She added a lot of fun to the videos also: ) not many you tubers do and think they should include the wife / GF adds some female perspective too on the cars we love:) Merry Christmas 🎄

@@HernanSpeed yes 🙏🏻 Thank you. It wasn’t easy to find them. Took 25 years ! All are Black and Gold apart from the Teal 92’. One is the Recaro Edition 82’ T/A. Factory seats from Recaro. Cornering is 🔥 Wow that’s what you remember all right from childhood. For me it was with Knight Rider cars. My dad had a Silver 77’ T/A red interior, so had to have a bandit from Smokey and the Bandit. I have made one of mine to look like the T/A from the Bandit 3 movie also filmed in Miami. These cars were so cool in pop culture Don Johnson drove a white Camaro IROC on the pilot of Miami Vice and Tubbs the 82’ Black T/A and to me it was the height of cool because it was on Vice. Couldn’t believe how much torque an Camaro IROC-Z had when I put it in Drive. It chirped the wheels right away 🤷🏼‍♂️ wow it must have had some souped up 5.7 I thought back then in 99’ when I first drove one in red. Was seriously impressed with the IROC-Z back then. You got me hooked on the 928 though! I love mine. Appreciate your videos man! Thank you for all you do:) if you can’t find your dad’s just buy a yellow one but better with low mileage! What you remember from back then will be even more better now with a perfect example :)

It’s almost impossible like you said. Most are trashed or gone. That’s what has made these cars go up in value so much lately. Besides people like us remembering how cool they were back when we were kids but couldn’t afford them. Most are exported that are nice. That’s why there is more In Europe now left than are in the states. It’s sad. But yes I’ll have to check that place out in person! Thanks 🙏🏻 Let me tell you what they ask for them is on point. The Mass airflow sensor failed a couple of times, the catalytic converter died at about 50k miles. The 700r4 blew up around 40k miles. I bought a 1987 IROC Z28 with T Tops Black with red interior almost loaded. It was my first new car after working a couple of years out of high school and some help to finance from my parents. I remember ordering the car picking out the options with the sales guy, buying cars back then were a lot of fun and involved not like today. the best part was the delivery day, I was so excited because it took a couple of months to build the car and everyone was buying them up. That day the sales guy took me to the delivery area where customers picked up their new cars. The car was under a car cover and when the sales guy took it off, I was totally blown away!! This was my car which the wait and anticipation was an awesome experience! It was the 80's and I was living a dream and it was like yesterday, by far one of my favorite cars but the experience of owning it new these cars could handle and drive real nice, especially going out to the clubs and yes racing Mustangs!! Oh, my new old car is a 1983 Mustang GT convertible had to get it off my bucket list. Lol 😆

Already did several things like lower it. Relocated the torque arm off the trans to the crossmember. And other stuff. I know 88-89 the iroc 5.0 was special in its own way only if you got the 5 speed. The 305 came with the l98 cam and a different tune. And it’s got almost the same power as the 350. But is actually faster then the 350.

Bought a 1988 IROC new and absolutely loved it. I owned it for 14 years and then sold it. Bad mistake. I miss that car. Mine was black with the flat black and electric blue stripe around the bottom, the 5.7 and t-tops. I still love that stripe combo the most today. I took impeccable care of this car and it looked better than new when I sold it and here's why. The paint on those cars was a problem. With the new paints GM was using at that time, mine faded like crazy. I ended up having to take the whole car apart when it was like 10 years old, strip it to bare metal and had to repaint it. I spent the time and $$ for the paint and it looked like glass when done. The other issue I had with my IROC was the check engine light was always on (it seemed like) for a MAF sensor code. I spent tons of time and money trying to figure it out at the dealer, independent shops and on my own. Never got it figured out. I finally just pulled the bulb out of the light and called it fixed. Other than that, it was a very reliable car and was super fun to drive. I would totally get another one.

Sounds like you had a fun IROC! The T-tops really make them even funner! 🙌🙌Yes, you’re totally right about the paints back then. The paint was crap on them, especially after August of 1987. Why? .... Because GM closed the Norwood, OH plant, and they were all done in Van Nuys, CA. Which had a garbage paint processing plant at that time. I ordered my loaded '87 w/ the 5.7 in late '86 and got in Feb. of '87. It was built in Norwood, which was only about 40 miles from the dealer I ordered it thru. Owned it 18 years and SOLD it in 2005 with 20,200 original miles. It was never in the rain 1 time as I always had multiple vehicles, and in 2023 that continues for me today.

I'll let someone with more knowledge on the subject jump in, but I went through the 1988 RPO codes and it lists t-tops and a 350 and doesn't mention any exceptions. I picked my IROC up at the Braeger Chevrolet in Milwaukee, WI in June of 1988, just a couple weeks after graduating college in May of 1988. It took them a little time to locate the exact car I wanted. I know I would have wanted a 5.7 and a manual transmission, but could not get that combo together. The top items on my list were the 5.7, t-tops and black in color. I didn't realize at the time that some black cars came with the black and blue stripes. I thought they were all gold stripes so I was pleasantly surprised when it showed up with the blue stripe. I really wanted the Bose stereo option, but they added like $1500 (can't remember the exact number) to the price of the car. I had to pass on that option.

I’ve kept my 89 Formula 350 that I’ve owned since 1991. I have to disagree that these cars are good in the snow. I don’t know for sure because I never took mine out in the snow. It was kinda dangerous and unpredictable in rain especially on the highway. So I learned early on to have a beater for inclement weather. As far as the 5.0 Mustangs being faster in a straight line, my results vary from this popular opinion. I was into street racing back in the day. Even bone stock, I was able to put a smack down on every stock or mildly modified 5.0 Mustang I ever came across. GT, LX, automatic or 5 speed, didn’t matter. I did lose to a handful of heavily modified ones. The 5.0 owners back in the day were amazed at how fast my Formula was. The ones who weren’t too embarrassed to talk afterwards never wanted a rematch. I do like the Mustangs, don’t get me wrong. That was originally what I was looking for when I stumbled across the Formula. The Mustangs were too expensive and I got a deal on the Formula. It was $2000 cheaper than any of the 5.0s I looked at and had much lower mileage to boot. I reluctantly bought it because I thought it was better looking but I too believed it was slower. How wrong I was.

@@mikee2923 the 350s were rare in the 3rd generation. For the most part they were all 305s. The 305s didn't stand a chance. The 350s were a much better race for sure you just don't see many. Had a buddy in high school who's brother had a iroc 350. He swapped out the auto in that car and put a 5 speed in it and that thing was fast! It's a shame none of the 350 cars had a option for 5 speed that would have changed the game for sure. In my experience the foxbodies were faster if you could get them to hook up, 5 speeds, the aod foxbodies were slow stock but fun. Mine is a auto car but it's got a built trans and a 35-3800 stall converter and the rear has 4.10 gears. Those changes alone make the foxes much quicker but then traction becomes an issue lol.. it's all a balancing act with both cars. I love them both but I have only owned 1 of the 3rd gen camaros and I'm on my 7th foxbody. This car has been built up quite a bit with heads, cam, intake, tb, and some suspension.. all in a stock appearing automatic gt convertible. It's a fun sleeper if you can call it that bc it sounds kinda mean lol.. those formulas are nice cars enjoy that you really see less of them then foxes anymore!!

They outsold most of its competitors, that’s why there were so many of them. As time passes, all older cars become more rare. So now, you can enjoy an IROC and be the only one that has one….makes it extra cool 💪💪 Thanks for watching! 👊👊

How prices of third generation can be escalating is hard to believe. I owned several IROC-Z's in the 80's. One was a blue one with a 5.0 tuned port injected engine (195hp) and I traded it in on one with the 5.7 tuned port injected engine (225hp). The 5.7 was much faster but I would not consider it collectable today. The only car I would consider collectable would be a Trans Am with the Buick Grand National's 3.8 liter turbo engine (245hp).

Sounds like you had some great ones in the 80’s! The 5.7 has incredible torque! I agree with you about the Trans Am! But the GNX’s engine had well over 245hp, it was totally underrated! I cover it in the video that comes out tomorrow! 💯👊💪 Barron thanks for watching! 🔥🔥
