Do EuroLeague Stars Earn MORE Than NBA Benchwarmers?
Спорт
It’s clear that the NBA is where big money is, but what if the only role a player can get is to warm the bench? Europe and more specifically the EuroLeague has been a popular landing spot for NBA athletes in such positions.
In this video, we delve into the financial landscapes of both leagues and discuss whether an NBA benchwarmer could earn more in the EuroLeague.

Warm that bench up and stay a valued tradable asset. By that time, I'd be on a veteran minimum. If I'm getting waived/released by then, it's time to jump leagues. Try the Euroleague circuit and all the other leagues around the world. Off top my head, there's the CBA, JBL, CEBL, ISBL, BSL, ACB, BBL, VTB, KBL, PBA, NBL, etc... There's so many to choose from.
A lot of NBA fans including myself were surprised that Mirotic chose to go back to Europe after having a successful time as a volume shooting PF in the NBA. He would have probably earned 15 million a season or possibly more (considering Duncan Robinson is paid 18m for being a 3-point specialist) if he'd stayed in the NBA and had an important role on many teams. However, he gets to be the highest paid player in Europe, play for and live in Barcelona as opposed to some random city in the US and be a superstar rather than an important role player and I can understand why he chose to go back.

@@liraymond96 ...yes, Juan Carlos made the all rookie second team but did he consider this a success? There's an article that writes "Despite his accomplishments and progress through his inaugural season, Navarro played for the NBA’s third-worst team and he received inconsistent minutes throughout the season - one game he would start, the next he would come off the bench. The combination of these factors more than likely played a role in his departure." In an interview with Intereconomia, Navarro said "there was a series of circumstances that did not make me feel at ease. The team was bad, the language was a barrier and my family, my girls were not comfortable. So when I had the option of returning to my team life, earning headlines again, and to be important, not waste it. Yes, that's a good one. Wesley Johnson's project didn't work out in Europe.
The biggest advantage in NBA is earning potential. As a benchwarmer in the NBA, yes you'd maybe make less, but if you can develop and earn your spot in an NBA rotation, your earning potential skyrockets. There are tons of benchwarmers who got shots for significant play time and then got huge paydays that go well well beyond Euroleague's top salaries. FRED Vanvleet, Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson and Duncan Robinson are just a few examples, but there are so many. In Euroleague your earning potential is capped around $5 million per year, no matter how great you play. I'd also add that NBA you have potential for a much higher potential for media attention and potential for lucrative sponsorship opportunities, access to generally better facilities and other perks of being in the NBA like team sponsorships and team staff support. I don't know too much of the Euroleague lifestyle, but I'm assuming basketball professional do not garner nearly as much recognition or have as many perks as NBA players. Once again, this is just potential opportunity, obviously if you never end up cracking a rotation it's probably worse financially than being a Euroleague star, but simply having the opportunity to crack a rotation and have massive on the court and off the court earning potential would make it well worth sticking in the NBA.

Nice video and good work you have done, but remember you had your review based on salaries that are completely different in each European country... For example Greece up to 2010 had alot of good American players and the presidents of the teams were giving alot of money, but about then Greece went in financial crisis and up until now still is.. the Taxes from about 10-15% have risen to 40% and teams give extra in the contract a house , car etc etc, this is done this way for tax reasons (i am from Greece and i know that). In the contract maybe a player gets 1-2 mil. per year but they get extra a signing bonus, which could be alot of money, those money dont have the same percentage of tax because are considered as bonus and they pay much less there..so even the salaries that you found are not the money that a team has to give to have a player.. If you look in Turkey if i remember well the tax is about 15% on everything, so they dont have to risk a big bonus and then have a player that has taken tons of money on bonus-signing fee and doesnt play well, most of money is in contract so if someone is sold you dont have so many expenses ... OF COURSE your video was about the players income not the teams expenses but what i meant is about the same with taxes and salaries is the same in many countries in europe ...Most countries maybe have the same currency the euro but taxes and way things work are completely different..Thanasis Antetokoymbo used to play for Panathinaikos before he came to NBA and really was a superstar... Do you know that his family didnt have alot of money when they first came from Africa and Thanasis was given to another family to grow up??because his family was very poor, thats why you can find videos saying that Giannis many times used to sleep in the stadium this is truth 100%... best regards from Greece sorry about my english , hope you understand what i was saying!!lol

Unless it's really about you wanting to play, financially, it pays to hang around in NBA for as long as you can.. as a veteran you qualify for a lot more money, even on a bench.. satoransky had 10 mil a season either this last year or a season before that.. even if you just keep half of it, how long would you have to be earning that in Europe? Also, NBA has retirement package if I'm correct. That might be a topic for another video.
You forgot one important thing. If you make the leap from bench warmer to role player and stay in the league for 8 or 10 years you will make way way more money in the NBA. Play solid defense and hit open jumpers and in half a decade you're making $7M a year. Going to Europe is basically conceding that you will never be anything in the NBA. That or you're hoping the extra playing time in Europe will up your game and get you back to the Association. That's why most Americans that play abroad have washed out of the league. About the adaptation NBA>Europe, we would also consider that players comes from NCAA. From here, they need to adapt to NBA or to NCAA. But NCAA is closer to Europe than NBA somehow. For NCAA undrafted elite players or second rond draft, or for some bench players hwo have spent few years in NBA and for who NCAA wasn't so far, it could be more interesting to go to Euroleague or Europe Cup. The question is for players who have to choose beetween draft and europe teams not qualified for Euroleague.
Many countries team gives apartment and car for player during their stay and for player outside of eu many times no taxes if you stay in country less than 6 month a year. Of course some countries they forget to pay couple of months salary at end.

In Euroleague a player with 9mjns if they are kmportnat can be one of the very good or best players.
It strongly depends. Not every US benchwarmer can be a starter in a top european team. Being generally bigger, faster and jumping higher helps, but won't make wonders in a slower and more team oriented game. On the other hand - many european key players ended up being average catch and shoot dummies because they could'nt bulk up and adapt to a faster and more physical game. For me being important is slightly more than being well paid. But I can see it is a hard decision since you may not get another chance in US.

A guy like Russel Westbrook, even in his prime, would not be considered a top EL player, damn outside of Russia and Monaco I can't imagine him completing an entire season in the Euroleague without fans booing him away mid-season. Also a guy like Joe Ingles, who was a role player in EL at best, got a significantly larger role in the NBA. A border line NBA player should choose the environment that fits his style more.

@@jerdansamagbisit547 I watch him closely, but stats padding is not appreciated in EL no matter how big is your talent. Westbrook cares about his contract 10 times more than he cares about the team. I can't imagine him doing something like this in Turkey/Greece, damn ven in Israel or Spain the crowd will make him miserable and demand to not give him minutes.

@@jerdansamagbisit547 it's about fit. Someone like Lebron would still be a star in Euroleague because of his adaptability. We can see that with Dominique Wilkins. Someone like Westbrook isn't going to get 30 minutes/game solely from coach preference.

Yeah, in a league where Anthony Parker was one of the better players no way PRIME westbrook could be a star. Prime mj would struggle too, same with shaq. They would do better than westbrook ofc, but still they would just be solid role players - no way stars like mighty larkin. In euroleague you need more than being strong or athletic. It’s about tactics after all. I’d say that 2017 fenerbache would give a good series to 2017 warriors. Gsw would struggle against good coached euroleague defense

I didn't watch all of it but let's not forget basketball is not that popular in Europe, like NBA is in USA. Football is popular and you can tell by their salaries
Is really hard to judge. the player needs to judge is playing time and the option he has in the nba before thinking in moving out. get in the NBA is already super hard, if you have a chance to stay in a team for lets say 5 years so it is usually easier as safe to stay. But if you feel like the window is about to close soon, like being in the bench with 5 mins of garbadge time and no one is noticing your stats, then just take a risk. reminder, Euroleague is a mens league! They play hard, is not like any benchwarmer in the nba would be a star. There is a few cases of success but most of the times the player needs to adapt to the culture, the league, the low press coverage... is hard! Specialy if the players wants to get those inflated numbers to get back to the nba.

Patrick Beverley was a bench warmer in the Euroleague and then reached a pick to be considered top 5 defender in the NBA 😅
I am a european so i probably would play in europe its just the crazy passion to the game
Good analysis. As an agent who works with pro players in Europe I’d say they the potential earnings is a big factor. If you’re on a minimum contract in the NBA you have the ability to play your way onto an 8 or even 9 figure deal. It’s also possible to earn that kind of money as a role player in the NBA whilst in Europe you’ve got to be a go-to-guy which doesn’t mesh with most players games.
Is it hard to go from EuroLeague to the NBA?
People don’t realize that playing pro ball anywhere is amazing, you get to do what you love for a living

Did you assume for the statement "Euro star earned twice as much as NBA bench warmer" that you pay almost no taxes in Europe? Probably a similar amount as in the US
Miloš Teodosić Came late into the NBA Because he got payed more by CSKA Moscow 5,8 for playing average that year. Yes he had great sessions behind him, but only average before signing.
I will try my chance in Euroleague and become the star
Yeah but he brings a ton of energy that gets the guys going
If I’m in that position I’m going for the bag regardless
Hey - Basketball News - You forgot the most important fact between NBA and Euro league basketball. In the euro league the clubs pay the taxes on the salaries, but in the NBA the tax burden is on the players. Therefore in the euro league you get to keep your whole salary.

People think European cities are boring and not like Paris or London, but many of them even the ones you don’t know are arguably even better than like most American cities. I get tired of people/ especially these entitled players always choosing LA, which is a SHIT city with a traffic and homeless problem and make it seem it’s a world city. ITS not LMAO. I tell you I would take Prague and many European capitals over LA with its overhyped Hollywood sign and full of prententious fake people who want to sell their souls for fame. All these players and fans always say about LA is it’s about the weather and the hot girls, but I can find that everywhere in Europe and America; especially those guys who will get beautiful women thrown at them wherever they go. That’s why feel annoyed seeing good franchises like the Pacers, Jazz, and Blazers out winning products consistently each season even if they are rebuilding, but these star players, who claim they want to win, choose lifestyle over winning teams unlike in Europe, where players in football, choose passion and history of a club over the superficial ness of these NBA players. I tell you if Euroleague had NBA superstars, it is the better league than the NBA. NBA is just lucky all the talent is there so they can get away with the brand of baskwtball. And I love the NBA and baskwtball is my favorite sport so it’s my favorite league, but these things are things I don’t like, and compare it to football, NBA can be better being more about passion and history than superficial ness and caring about who is the GOAT player.
The reality is that they won't play for Europe teams unless they play for a national team
Euroleague for me as a football/Manchester United fan. Passion in Europe is intense probably second if not equal to south america plus you have more chance to win trophy since there's domestic league/cup and Euroleague/cup
Actually he (Thanassis) SHOULD be in Europe because he could probably be a solid wing like Derrick Williams lol

NBA. It’s harder to make in the NBA than in Europe. I would want to prove myself against the best players and those players are in the NBA. I mean a bench warmer in the NBA can be a starter in Europe tells you lot about the talent in both leagues. If you want to prove your talents then it the NBA if you care more about an easy life style and have them pay everything for you but not play against the best then go to Europe!

@@BasketNews_com Must to agree, but in other side - there are not so much teams for all good players in both EL and NBA. Players have 2-3-5 year contracts, are adapted in team sistems etc, so such places as China - is good place to be basketball player, at least in financial aspect.
I just feel more Americans should want European/international basketball leagues to be better for the sake of the game. Truth is football is king in the world and lots of that is that it is popular in almost every continent even North America in Mexico. Basketball may never reach the popularity of football worldwide, but I think it can be much closer than other sports. American football will always be an American thing and baseball is almost the same outside a few countries. Baskwtball already has a good following in Europe even in big football countries. I feel like the European leagues should invest more money into the sport and bring it lore coverage. I also believe America should help European/foreign leagues and help bring talent there. I honestly think NBA/ Foreign leagues should try to model the player market like in football. It wouldn’t be like transfers or signings, but I believe NBA should open the trade market to European teams. I don’t know if this is possible or if NBA would agree with it, but if an NBA team wants a player there, they can offer some compensation and maybe a young player who hasn’t gone much playing time in exchange for a player like Micic or Musa in Madrid. Again don’t think NBA teams would want to do it and players might not agree wanting to get traded to Europe or even outside Europe, but if they are an end of the Bench guy that most likely won’t get time, I believe Euroleague would be so much better than even the G-League. Also if a player doesn’t want to play for a European team, they can’t o the buyout thing like in the NBA and give that money for the European club. Hope this kind of make sense.
What you don't understand is that a benchwarmer in the NBA will still be a benchwarmer in EL or even a very important role player in the NBA could be a benchwarmer in EL. Let me give you an example, Thanasis Antetokounmpo had the exact same role maybe 2-3 mins more in Panathinaikos but less money. Another example is Mario Hezonjia who left his starting five role in the NBA to become quite useless in europe .You Americans underestimate European basketball so much, no wonder why you didn't even reach the finals in the world cup.

Yes, you can, at EuroLeague.tv
Does it really matter where any of these guys play? Literally in any market, they are making 10-1000 times what an average person makes. If a person made $50k/year playing professional ball in Guatemala, they could live 4 times as well as an average Guatemalan, and still save at least $2k every month... It feels to me, like if a guy did that for 20 years, and went down in the Guatemalan record books, he will still be doing just fine financially, by any measure used in the world, having never even played in a major league, and he's probably not even 40 yet.
People don't pay taxes in Europe?

In two words - its moneybug`s tournament. If it would be a systematized FIBA tournament, then there would be a lot of shitty games for weak teams from countries where there is little interest in basketball, or too many teams from strong national tournaments, which is also not so interesting for other countries, and in total it would not carry such the commercial success that the Euroleague has now in the form like it has now.
