Do Eastern Orthodox Evangelize? | A History of Orthodox Christian Missions | Vol. 2. (1601-1917)

Ойын-сауық

Welcome to the second video we are doing in a series on the history of Orthodox missions in the second millennium.
Our first can be found here: • Video
This series of videos was created mainly to answer the accusation of Catholic apologists that we do not evangelize and, therefore, we could not be the true church. Catholic apologists cite the supposed successes of Catholic missionaries throughout North and South America, Africa, and Asia but have these missions actually achieved results more spectacular than other religions and sects?

One could say self-propelled research. This was not the case for me - when I came out of anti-theism, Catholicism was the obvious choice and became a six-month fight I still struggled with for almost all of the decade I've been Orthodox; this is because I had an ecumenist (Vatican 2-ish) view of the episcopate, my wife is a Catholic, and the Latin Mass (which she now attends) is practically Western Rite. But marriage is not how truth is determined.

@@ubipetrus3882 Not well. Her Bishop was one of the rare ones who actually said "well, they didn't sit around coming up with conspiracies all day, so I'm not implementing it where it doesn't apply," since he's one of the last Neocons who doesn't represent "Leftism for Conservatives." But she knows Francis can squash all of them, and everyone is buzzing on how Cuppich's recent meeting with the Pope likely is over doing in the TLM for good in the US. I have been trying to hint that the problem is systematic (speaking of Leftist worlds, lol) and that the difference between the Pope and Elpi (who appeared at the Synodality on Synods meetings/safe space hugbox for Rome's bishops last week) is that we aren't bound by what Elpi or the Apostle of Climate Change say, and that those Bishops who do wrong can get excommunicated for it even if they're at the highest post, the way things used to be. The tough part is that she is not like debating with Catholic apologists. She brings things of her own to the table, conclusions drawn from points made by (shall we say) brighter, more historically important individuals in the Roman sphere. She's a tougher nut to crack, especially with the force of both sides of family tradition in the background and the whole shebang in general making her too angry to want to talk about it for long (which makes sense), and at any rate Francis' God (sic) of Surprises theology, along with the corporate feel that constantly gets injected, is making my whole argument for me. At least when our own clergy aren't jumping in the middle of it with theirs.

I was intrigued when i realized that a small mission under the polish and servian churches exists here in Brazil. Orthodoxy is for everyone! "Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. God did not say the promises are to Abraham's seeds, meaning many; but one, saying "to your seed" which is Christ. There is neither Jew or Greek, there is neither slave or free, there is neither male or female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then are you Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise" (Galatians 3:16, 28-29)

Even in the Philippines where papism is forced through colonization for 333 years went backfired and now they are doing something like "new evangelization" due to a massive number of catholics in the archipelago are just nominal and have no idea on their religion when it comes to their basic catechism. Their so called Doctrina Cristiana didn't work well. Some Papal apologist will refute the first premises you laid by stating "Philippines don't have diluted natives, there is conversion en masse". But the reality is far from it. Indios or native filipinos are bred like rabbits for manual labor and other man power allocation under Polo Y Servicio. Making them catholics at the same time use the tribal difference among the native is an effective way to expand amassment of resources at the same time control using papal religion for free labor. For example Spanish colonists use Campangpangans as constabulary while cavite manpower for free naval production. A better way to do than exporting military regiments from Viceroyalty of Mexico or Spain. Another reason of rapid population growth under catholic papalism in the archipelago is the accounts of rape and sexual violation against women natives by friars and other Spanish authorities. Fray Fidel Villaroel OP a historian said that illegitimate child of these Spanish figures carried a specific last name to tell which one impregnated by who (a game of thronelike scenario). "Those who are illegitimate children of Governors are named Reyes, and the bas**r* children of his cohorts are called delos reyes. Friars' offspring from indios are called Santos and those delos Santos are from the sacristan mayor. Those who bear Dela Cruz are from the Hermano Mayor (Lay Chairperson of Parroquia) and the disgraced children of nuns violated by men of authorities are names Del Rosario. This is why in the Philippines those Spanish surnames are the most common because 500 years of Catholicism really bore a lot of b*sta*ds from the "Catholic friars and Spanish colonizers" Yup a lot of trads will get mad at this lol.

@@ubipetrus3882 from the Jesuit Spanish account there were already Greek and Armenian settlers that lived in manila capital however that doesn't constitute as a mission of sort. The first mission as far as I heard was from the request of the Benedictine Monastery of Calatagan Island in Masbate lead by Fr. Vincentius Esarcha of blessed memory to Metropolitan of New Zealand for their conversion to Orthodoxy. I am just a child of first converts in that country that are now in the States and visiting the country back and forth. I think you can ask the Masbate Monastery for their Chronicles and pictures last time I know of the first converts especially the nuns are still there to hear their story. As far as I know there is a page called Orthodox Manila where they have those documents to date. I hope this info helps.

Just goes to show that the gates of hell will not prevail on Christ's Church even when those who were entrusted to safeguard the faith did not live according to it. It's been 500 years since Catholicism reached the Philippines yet it is still a predominantly Catholic nation. And since then, alot of Catholic Universities, Hospitals and charitable institutions have been built that have helped the country and in so many ways. If that is not part of the great commision, just because of the selfish motives of the Spanish Monarchy and the unfortunate incident of erring clergymen, then what church should have been in the place of Catholicism here in the Philippines to fulfill that great commision? Does it it mean that even if 2,000 years has passed, and still counting, the Philippines is still waiting for the true church to change the course of history of the entire country? The truth is God works through history even if his people have not been faithful. If Orthodoxy is the true Church, it should have been here 500 years earlier and not the Catholic Church. No amount of research can rewrite what God wanted fulfilled, that the Philippines be part of His Church, the One, Holy, Apostolic, Catholic Church. For if not, we Filipinos must have been forsaken for 500 years due to our pagan ancestors.

Can you please do a video on the current Moscow-Constantinople Schism? I’m having a hard time understanding which side is correct. The MP claims Constantinople invaded its canonical territory and recognized schismatics who were outside the Church. The EP claims Moscow unlawfully seized the Kyiv Metropolis from Constantinople in 1685 and legitimized their control through simony by bribing Patriarch Dionysius IV in 1686. Are territorial disputes even worth going into schism in the first place? Does the Patriarch of Alexandria’s recognition of the UOC justify Moscow’s own invasion of Alexandria’s canonical territory? I think this is the most serious issue pressing the Orthodox world at the moment.

    1) Because I have a policy of *not* giving spiritual advice (I'm just a guy who likes history, Latin, and Costco pizza), the most I will say is this: I cannot imagine a situation in which your parish priest is not your default confessor but if you don't feel comfortable with him, tell him and see what he says. Most priests are far more concerned with you being able to make a thorough confession than their ego. The danger is with people who hop from confessor to confessor without good reason (i.e. moving long distances). Be wary of people who insist you need to find a monastic confessor: the truth is, hardly anyone is special enough that they need a monastic elder as a confessor because you have exactly the *same* problems as 25% of the people in your parish but you have fairly similar problems as 50% of the people in your parish simply by virtue of being a male. 2) Why don't you just email/message/text your priest?

When did missionaries have a significant presence there ever? Vietnam went Communist, I don’t know why you ignore this, as did the northern part of Korea, where most of the missions happened.
