Dmitri Hvorostovsky (1962-2017) performing "O Carlo, ascolta" from Verdi's opera Don Carlos during the final of the 1989 BBC Cardiff Singer Of The World competition.
The phenomenal showdown with contemporary Bryn Terfel during the Main Prize final soon became known as the 'Battle of the Baritones' and, until this day, marks one of the highlights of the competition's history.
The Russian baritone took the Main Prize that year. He was one of the world’s most extraordinary operatic singers, with a great appreciation for the works of Verdi and Tchaikovsky in particular. He embodied a great variety of characters, including Onegin, Yeletsky, Germont, Don Giovanni, Rigoletto, Count di Luna and many more, at the most renowned opera houses worldwide. He was equally a sought after recitalist, with his repertoire covering a great variety of composers, from Russia and beyond.
In 2019, the Cardiff Singer Audience Prize was dedicated to his memory.

He was still 26 here, actually. He would turn 27 later that year in October. But yes, such artistic mastery at such a relatively young age. Wonderful!

Even though I’ve seen this about a million times on other channels, I’ve never been more excited for a video to come out in my life
I saw this and was mesmerised by this talent.. A versatile voice than can reach heights and lows further than normally associated with ‘baritone’. To sing anything from ‘Xerxes’ let alone in competition, takes courage. To lose this artist at 55 years old was a tragedy felt round the world.. His charismatic presence, you cannot learn or teach, plus a god-given singing voice, made him an operatic superstar… he will live long in the memory and never be forgotten. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Stunning. Beautiful, and so heartfelt. What a performance. His combination of technique, power, tenderness... the emotion he conveys... I am so grateful to be able to hear this. So grateful he shared his gifts with us.
Breath control!!!!!!!!!! When one of the judges is weeping, you know you're getting a good score.
However many times I listen to this performance I am still excited and astounded at the quality and promise of a voice that is already world class and would hit the ground running. The phrasing and breath control is out of this world! In the 34 years since this performance, I have heard no other Baritone sing this aria with the same breath control. Dmitri was so involved with the story of this aria, that he died on stage that night! And while my heart wanted to hear the final note of the aria ( because I am selfish and I just wanted him to continue singing forever) he performed it as he would in future full opera performances and expire on the last bar instead. That took great guts in a singing competition and it showed a vocal and performing mastery, which I don’t think I have heard before of since in Cardiff Singer. No matter how many recordings of Dmitri singing that I hear, and believe me I have listened to a fair few, this always excites me….and saddens me that he is no longer with us and was taken at a time when he still had so much to give ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

His voice was nice when he was young but very early on his career it became woofy and lacking in core. Heavy smoking probably had a lot to do with that. I think be was never a great baritone though - - - nothing like Merill for example
