DJI Mavic 3: The TOUGH LOVE Review - Part 1

Фильм және анимация

Check out Storyblocks here: storyblocks.com/Pbloom
Part 2 has been delayed first by DJI releasing new firmware just as I was about to upload it which made it very out of date, then I filmed all my reshoots and caught COVID-19 which has floored me for the last 10 days. It is slow progress but I am working on it again. It will be worth the wait. :)
Like all my reviews this took many weeks to make and it was never going to be ready for when the embargo was lifted for the DJI Mavic 3, but that’s fine and nothing new for me!
By really taking my time and doing exhaustive testing I have been able to really get to know everything about this drone. Whilst it is missing features that are coming in late January, most importantly the active track, all the main things I focus on when reviewing drones are present. This is a camera review, albeit a flying camera review!
I decided to split it into two as there’s so much to cover and it would be over an hour long if I didn’t!!
This is a very impressive and powerful drone that has a huge amount of improvements over the Mavic 2 Pro but there’s also some things that in my opinion DJI absolutely MUST fix to justify its extraordinarily high price tag comparably to its predecessor.
So find a comfortable place to watch it on a big screen and get a drink and some snacks. It also works better if you have a cat or a dog sitting with you!

Part 2 has been delayed first by DJI releasing new firmware just as I was about to upload it on the 6th December which made it very out of date. So I reshot all my image tests and filmed then new footage for the new features. Just after finishing the filming, I caught COVID-19 which has floored me for the last 10 days. It is slow progress but I am working on it again. It will be worth the wait. :)

I cannot wait for part 2... I cannot tell you how many reviews I've asked in comments to talk about thr different shooting modes and the different frame rates to see if there's aliasing or quality loss and proper comparisons between h265 and pro res. man you are the first person I've seen actually talk about what matters... I must have asked about 20 content creators i swear. Thank you for this.

Thank you for clearing up the ProRes workflow issues. So in theory, with two M3Cs, 8 to 10 batteries, a generator or huge battery bank, a fast computer, LOTS of secondary storage, and an assistant to handle the data management while flying; an operator could in theory sustain a full day of ProRes HQ shooting. As you say, frankly, ridiculous.

The greatest cliffhanger of 2021 so far🍿 I still love my Mavic Pro 2 and finding it hard to justify the price tag for an upgrade right now. I think part 2 will determine the fate of my credit card. Will need a genuine leap in image quality and dynamic range to justify it.

I agree with you about the M2P, although DJI have taken the M2P off their retail list according to their website at least and won’t be issuing any more updates it’s still an incredibly capable aerial platform for photographers though I do worry about what the implications maybe for the Go 4 app.

  • 2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for a great and thorough review Philip! Really looking forward to part 2. I just want to add my issues with the Mavic 3 in your comment section, just in case DJI listens to your input and maybe even read the comments (I really think they should). 1) Why does the Mavic 3 have such a crippled and limited gimbal pan (+/- 5 degrees) compared to the Mavic 2 Pro (+/- 75 degrees)? For me, that gimbal pan is extremely valuable when filming moving subjects and making them look cool. Plus it's safer and easier to fly forward with the gimbal panned far out, instead of flying sideways'ish trying to accomplish the same thing. This one is for the "How to make simple things much more complicated" books. Sigh… 2) With the new controllers, it seems we lose either way. To use a bigger screen to control the app, like an iPad or something, we have no other choice but to use the RC-N1 controller, which has fewer buttons, dials and wheels, and is too basic compared to the old Mavic 2 Pro controller. Then, if we choose the RC Pro instead to get a better controller, we are stuck with a tiny screen, and cannot connect for instance an iPad to control the app. I know we can connect an external monitor and get an HDMI feed out, but we cannot control the app by touching the monitor. Not a good solution. Sigh… 3) Not being able to chose other ISO values than 400 and 800 when in D-Log. I know people keep repeating that high ISO combined with low light and log footage is a bad idea since you can get noise etc, but I want to make that decision myself, not have DJI make it for me. Noise reduction in post usually isn't that hard. Sigh… 4) Why the FLY app, when they already have the much better GO 4 app? Sigh… 5) Why no enhanced color display when shooting D-Log like the Mavic 2 Pro has? Sigh… 6) The non-swappable SSD in the Cine version like you talk about. Sigh… By the way, it wouldn’t surprise me if the so called “SSD” was just a micro SD card soldered to the motherboard, since the weight difference between the regular Mavic 3 and the Cine version just happen to be the same as what a micro SD card weighs… 7) I’ve spent quite a few days in DaVinci Resolve comparing ProRes to the other codecs, and I can’t really see much of a difference between them (in normal ISO and good light), even when pushing and grading the footage quite heavily. I expected a much larger difference between the codecs, especially with the much higher bitrate and the ridiculous large file sizes of the ProRes. 8) I have seen test footage where the propellers of the Mavic 3 can be seen almost as a “color vibration” on the left and right side of the footage when flying at certain angles to the sun, like in this video by Darren McHardy (you can clearly see it from around 4:55 in the video): kzread.info/dash/bejne/imeN0syiicapm7Q.html To me, this seems quite concerning… Could it be the bright color of the propeller tips that reflects light towards the camera lens? 9) The plastic toy-tele-camera. Sigh… 10) Releasing a drone now, without a C-class marking. Sigh… I could have added more than these 10, but I haven’t got the time, since I need to make more popcorn in case you publish part 2. Cheers, Eivind

  • @philipbloom

    @philipbloom

    2 жыл бұрын

Cheers Eivind I cover a fair amount of what you talk about in part 2. The gimbal can’t pan because of its size, a real shame. There was ISO higher in the pre-release version but it went with release firmware. I shot stuff for part 2 at 6400! Being forced to use the over sharpened and too contrasty normal mode for lower light is not good. The gamma assist for log will come back. I had it and again lost it with new firmware. I’ve seen a screenshot of the January firmware and it’s deffo in that version. The SSD is is an SSD. It’s too fast to be something like a micro SD. it can write 5.1k 50p ProRes Hq after all! The basic controller is a mistake on a drone this price. Interestingly the iOS app has the ability to change the exponential values of the sticks but the android one in the RC pro doesn’t. One other thing is if you look at the file directory of the Rc pro it says DJI Go V5, not DJI fly!

  • 2 жыл бұрын

@@philipbloom GO V5...? Wouldn't that be nice, if they not only fixed a lot of stuff in firmware, but also surprised us with a brand new and even better GO app! Wouldn't fix the basic controller, but... I had my finger on the "buy" button of the M3 Cine the same day they launched it, but after a few initial reviews, I was leaning more towards the Fly More Combo. But after having watched part 1 of your review, I'm actually thinking about keeping my M2P instead. Even though the M3 seems better in so many ways, some of the bad points of the M3 is close to being deal breakers for me. My boss (I'm self employed, so that would be me) says I can have a brand new Mavic 3 Cine or whatever as a pre-Christmas gift, but I think I'll wait until the big DJI M3 firmware update in January (and your part 3, hint hint...) and see what's been fixed or not.

The choice of app annoys me. With the fly app we lose waypoints, the ability to adjust saturation, sharpening, contrast, turning off landing protection, the ability to tap to grab focus (apparently it's either manual or continuous, no button to grab focus), the ability to alter joystick exp, and add to that the loss of tripod mode. Why DJI? Just give people the choice, it's supposed to be for more advanced pilots, people who want control.

As things stand now, with all kinds of travel restrictions, I'm more tempted to get another Phantom 4, a Pro, saving a lot of money and utilising all the batteries and other gear that I already have. I like the image and video quality and features of the 4 Pro. It's easier to spot as well. To me, that's an advantage. If I want stealth, I have a Mini 2. Still looking forward to the second part.

Thanks Edward. I saw a couple of people mention it wasn’t ideal but didn’t see anyone go through the full nightmare workflow and data management from flying to offload. Its frankly ridiculous! 🤓 I don’t get how nobody at DJI flagged these things before production. The moment I got the specs sent to me, before I got the drone, I said that surely you haven’t put in a non removable 1tb SSD?

@@philipbloom it certainly does mean very careful planning of shots to reduce amount captured. Hopefully they will be able to offer ProRes 422 / LT with a firmware update , at least that would make it a little less painful. Still undecided which version of the mavic 3 to get so bit of a moot point for me at the moment.

Excellent part one, waiting impatiently por part two 😎 I got a M3 cine for myself, i cannot imagine doing all my personal work flights using ProRes (or none really), but i can imagine working on production environment for clients (been on a few, targeting some more) where i do not need to fill up the all of the SSD at once, and can offload it quickly in between shots to my Macbook Pro (2021, TB 4). During most of the scenes there is a lot of "dead" time in between flights on set. For a full day out shooting, yes i agree it is a total pain in the a*s using prores on the M3c with non removable storage. I really love this drone and picture quality, even now with half the features, but i crave for manual control on dials and buttons, i really miss what we had on Go4/ M2Pro. I'll be working on a pretty showreel for my youtube with the Mavic 3, anytime soon. If you care to see the one i shot with A2s on the Azores, i would aprecciate it :) regards Philip!

Just.... THANK YOU! I was almost forced to become a YT video reviewer because no one was willing to talk about how "un professional" the Cine workflow experience truly is. I cannot believe the internal HD isn't powered via usb power. I would have taken 10min less flight time for removable SSDs. This cannot be used in any standard high paced production environment. 😒

Welcome. Yeah it’s crazy. It should be able to be powered by usb for offloading for sure. In part two I suggest they make a dummy battery to usb power delivery so you can offload without having to wait for a battery to charge. But to be honest micro sd looks like the future for me here. If only the 4K h265 didn’t have crazy NR

The best review as always and can't wait for part 2 - How has the rest of KZread not highlighted these seeming obvious issues? Killing a battery just to download footage ( if you've even got one charged after a flight) seem bonkers.

I loved this review. I never sit down to watch anything more than 10 minutes since I get restless but this was a very captivating piece of work. Pity DJI couldn't figure out or held back on removable media for Prores but maybe we see that in a slightly tweaked Mavic 3 Cine S a year and a half from now. As a total noob to the drones, I am eagerly waiting for part two to see if the Mavic 3 is the "best" option for me or saving a bunch and going with an Air 2S. I think for the media I do, 80% stills and 20% video for KZread that the normal Mavic 3 is for me. Thank you, Philip.

Shooting aerials from helicopters for years, during rehearsals the pilot and I would usually first establish "Number One", "Number Two" etc. These were positions in space that defined where the camera ship would be at a certain point during the shot. In other words, waypoints. We really need waypoints. Safer, easier and photographically superior drone operations would result.
