Thanks for the DYI - one tip I learned the hard way - add the Dawn after you fill the jug with water so you don't have to wait for the suds to go down.
Been using this solution for decades. I don’t measure anything. Works great.
Great video! Suggestion: use distilled water instead of tap water.
Thanks for the video. I would cut the amount of Dawn by half or more, if you don't want soap residue on the windshield.
Thank you so very much!!! I will make some today!!! Yes my first time!!!
Thank you sooo much!!!! This will save me so much money!!
Cool! Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this

A well executed video, simple instructions all done without loud music and stupid sensationalism. I will brew some up tonight and thank you for your contribution in the youtube classroom. All the best from New Rochelle N.Y.

Put water in container first, then add Dawn and rubbing alcohol. Gets rid of "bubble" problem.
I drive a plow truck in Chicago, we all go through these so fast that I had to look how to make it cuz half these gas stations are out of it or it's $6 a jug and the rest of the places are closed cuz the bullshit going on

My rubbing alcohol I buy is 99% I made some a few hours ago, here in Canada they charge about $6.00 per bottle of windshield fluid

I haven’t made a winter mix yet, but in my summer mix I use a long squirt and a half of dawn with about 6-8 oz of ammonia. If you want color, just add a few drops of your favorite food coloring. Also, as mentioned earlier, putting the water in first will reduce the bubbling while filling.
Would you please show how to unclog a severely clogged kitchen sink. I've run a small snake about 15 feet down the mainline from the outside portal, but it didn't help. Do I need to just go further down the line? Thanks for your advice!
What is the freezing temperature of that highly diluted alcohol? You used about 7 pints of water to 1 pint of alcohol.
I shook it up after putting everything in and the ran a test I put one bottle in my freezer at 0°F and 1 in the garage at 29°F. The one in the freezer froze except for the rubbing alcohol which apparently separated from the water. The one 1 in the garage didn't freeze but I put a thermometer in it to how cold it was 35.3°F. Is there a reason it separated?
Thank you very much for your video. If using vinegar instead of the alcohol, as you suggest in the video description, could it affect the paintwork and/or rubber around the windshield?
👍
Is that mixture good down to 5 degrees?
Another thing...Isopropyl alcohol freezes @-128°F and NOT around 170°F. While Methanol freezes @-147°F. Methanol is better for freezing. Just wanted to point that boring but useful fact out there. Cheers.

It's not about how much they charge for it. I drive a truck and sometimes you just can't find the stuff anywhere. I'm just looking for something to use in an emergency situation.
This will replace windex too
Hello I was wondering how it cost only pennies when the alcohol for 1 gallon is around $40 dollars. I took 128 ounces and you said 6 to 8 ounces per gallon so I just went with 6 ounces that would enough for 21 fills which comes out to $1.90 per refill. So it's cheaper and I know that the price for rubbing alcohol has gone up but I can purchase a gallon of Windshield washer fluid for -20° below for $3.00 so I don't see a significant savings in this current time period of February, 2024. Do you know where I can get rubbing alcohol or Isopropyl for a desirable price? Thanks

Will this mess up the rubber in the tank or pump?. Great video btw
Four bucks? I live in New England buddy, try $7 or $8 gallon! All the more reason to make it yourself. thanks for the content.
Add the soap at the end. Problem solved
At the dilution of water to alcohol, what is the approximate freezing point of your DIY winter windshield washer fluid?

probably around 35°
Prices for the gallon pre-mix going through the roof.. not unusual to see $5, $6, $15?!? wtf, with the price gouging?! I thought there was a tiny amount of anti-freeze (mono propl. glycol) in the commercial grade mixes, not just reg. alcohol blended in- or did that stop happening sometime in the last 25 years?
Does this damage car paint?
I'm no chemist but by my calculation your DIY fluid comes out at about 4.4% alcohol. This might give you freeze protection down to about 25 degrees or so (just guessing). The -35 degrees stuff is around 40% alcohol (methanol) or maybe a little higher. I think I'll stick with the store bought stuff.

50% = -23°; 60% = -32° - By the time you account for enough alcohol you may as well have paid for the pre mix.

The mixture should be between 30.5- 32.5 percent methanol to withstand temperatures as low as -20°F. I make this stuff for a living. Be careful with DIY because it will f*ck you car up if you do it wrong
Why not methanol instead of isopropyl alcohol? I think it's less expensive.

Why do so many DIY recipes say to use distilled water?
@PhillipBridgesReviews
2 жыл бұрын
Distilled water has all the minerals and impurities removed. That way there is no possible way to get build up in hose lines.
Nowhere near enough alcohol for any place that gets cold. Isopropyl alcohol is very expensive at least in Canada not sure why. But it’s def not pennies to make winter wiper fluid. You need about 30% of your gallon to be IPA. Doesn’t make economic sense. And you also need to use distilled water not tap to save your lines and pump from getting mineral buildup
I've seen many people add ammonia why do you not use it?

@@harrypoter4465 This is completely false and whatever comes from a house tap wouldn't have anything that could clog a washer line because the tap has a fine mesh filter anyways so duh. Tap water is more than acceptable!!! don't waste your money on distilled aqua.
@tadcox6345

@@peteranserin3708it all depends on where you live. People with hard water have mineral build up on their fixtures and they'll have it on their windshield and in their washer nozzles too if they use tap water. And of course the filter screen will not stop dissolved solids😂
The store bought stuff does not use alcohol but methanol in their windshield wash products to protect from freezing. Isopropyl alcohol does not work the same way as methanol does. Obviously you cannot buy methanol in a store as far as I know so be careful making your own stuff. It's all got to be measured accurately by the percentage of water to methanol. If you don't get it right it will freeze inside your car and cause a problem. I make this stuff for a living btw. Cheers to trying to save money though! 🍻

winter washer fluid costs 15 PLN per 4 liters. 99% IPA costs 40 PLN per 5 liters and I can make about 25 liters of winter washer fluid with this alk. so, in store I would have to pay 90 PLN for about 24 liters and by this DIY I will pay for the same amount of fluid about 40 PLN. It's at least half of money saved. It is a good deal!

What do you mean it cost a couple pennies to make? The alcohol isn't free. And when you add it all that water to the alcohol you raised the temperature of the freezing point.
