DIY TRUCK CAMPER / DODGE DAKOTA / PART 3

Спорт

Hi and welcome back to our dodge dakota diy truck camper series. It's been a while since part 2 but switzerland is getting rained out lately, so we just gotta wait for the clouds to clear sometimes. Since part 2 the following has happend:
-waterproofing the whole cabin from floor to roof with epoxy/fiberglass (very sticky and tricky stuff for firsttimers like we are, but we got better every layer)
-cutting holes for our 4 side and 2 roof windows and installing them
-finished armaflex insulation inside and started putting the cotton fabric with sprayglue on top (be gentle)
-Finn, my 2 year older brother, working his magic on all the electrical..he's a perfectionist for sure, working on the job since almost 15 years.
-the banks, kitchen table, dinner table and some wooden trim had been painted, you will see in the next video..
stay tuned for PART 4.. the cabin is ready to be lifted on the truck :)))

I have had a camper before and I guess I'm used to what I'm used to. If I were to make my own camper like that it would be long enough for a shower and toilet. Thanks for posting this for us.

I think putting that diesel heater on the outside was a bad choice, when it's really cold it will be drawing in really cold air, which means, more diesel will be needed to bring it up to the correct temperature.

I've never seen epoxy colored, did you mix a coloring agent or did it come like that? I'm going to make a camper for my flat bed ute, out of marine ply and glass and I was just going to lay the glass and epoxy it, (like I've done with boats) then once cured I was going to paint it with an epoxy paint. But your method seems quicker as 2 steps can be achieved in one step. Anyway great job, I'll be coming back to get some ideas from your build. cheers

Hey Patrick. All my windows are from a brand called carbest, ordered on a german website for not too much money. The cloth glued to foam is only done to make it more comfortable and cozy to life in. The cloth is the finished look and there will not be a coating on top of that. I did it this way instead of using wood to save weight. Yes my bro really did a great job!! i already tested all the lights, plugged my cooler in, heated up the cabin with my china heater and charged a couple batteries.. works really good so far :) cheers

Out of curiosity what is the total of your expenses so far? If you would be so I cloned would like to hear how much each component cost from how much for the amount of what type of screws, adhesives, foam insulation, lumber, plywood, fiberglass, windows, clear plastic vent type for vent for roof, and etc...? In addition, how many hours you've put in so far for this type of build? And what about links to any of the parts you bought? I know I'm asking a lot but I'm on the fence trying take this task on aswell so any advice at all will be greatly appreciated.

Hey harris, cool to hear you wanna start your own personal build :) i will make a video about the total cost of the camper soon. So i can't tell you yet.. But i can tell you how long it took in our case: With the help of my dad we worked around 35 days on the camper. 6 to sometimes 10hrs a day. My brother who did all the electricals maybe worked for 4 8hrs days.. So if i did this only by myself (which is almost impossible in my opinion), it would take me around 70-80 days of work at least.. 🤔

It's surely mentioned somewhere but what is the finished weight? My truck payload is 1600 but that is to include 250 lb me and other people/things. I assume fibreglass on wood is lighter than even thin alum siding and same as poorman's fiberglass (glue on canvas plus paint). Is there other colors but gray for epoxy to avoid separate painting?

  • @TruckHomeSwitzerland

    @TruckHomeSwitzerland

    Жыл бұрын

Hey brad. My camper weights around 500-550kg. Im sure you could build the same style/size like mine even lighter.. Fiberglass on wood works great. I don't think there's a huge weight difference to aluminium. If i build another camper in the near future i would do it in 2 steps: fiberglass/epoxy and then color. The color beeing mixed directly with epoxy does not seem to be a very nice longterm solution. Color gets washed off by time..

@@TruckHomeSwitzerland thanks, that weight would be just barely okay but still with weight of my wife and I plus camping gear it may be too much. So hard to have a slide in camper with a mere 1/2 ton......I had no idea at the start that it would be an issue. Nice to know it's better to just paint after vs mix color in the epoxy. Lots of work ahead of me but it will be a labor of love and these videos of builds like yours make it so much easier.
