Truck Camper Build - Self Built Camper- how we built our home on wheels!

Ойын-сауық

#truckcamperbuild
#selfbuiltcamper
#camperbuild
In this video we show you exactly how we built our our self built camper, almost entirely from refurbished wood. This a complete timelapse of the truck camper build from start to finish. We did the entire thing for under $4,000, including our solar setup. It was only supposed to last a year, but we fell in love with it, and have been living full time in our tinyhome on wheels for almost two years now.
Through use of timelapse we were able to capture the entire process of the 43 day project.
We did our best to give as much useful information as possible, and are more than happy to answer any questions you may have!
Please hit that subscribe button, and follow along to see how building this camper has completely changed our lives and the lives of so many others.

    Aviation Dope would last longer and hold up nicer against the wind blowing across it. Aviation Dope is used on the airfoils(wings) and cockpit on light weight Aerobatic plans know as a Scitaborea which is literally Aerobatics spelled backwards because it's a stunt plan so all of the flexing and turbulence the Aviation Dope holds up. If you start noticing the paint failing and need a longer lasting solution, that would be a great option especially if you decide to do another build and only do a frame an use sheets instead of wood to make it even lighter weight.

    Great Idea! I'm in the planning stages of building a slide on camper/micro house. Putting it on a landscape trailer. So I can use the trailer for other things as well. This is by far the best video on building your slide in camper I've seen. You guys did a great job. Although, I would have liked the time lapse to be a bit slower; I was pausing and "rewinding" to get a glimpse of the details and product materials. I did notice one item in the video that caused me some concern though, the position of the propane tank. Your video showed it directly under the sink. I'm concern for the safety aspect of leaking gas. I hope that you compensated for this by allowing for max ventilation and have an appropriate amount and placement of gas detectors. Looking forward to more videos. Great job.

    A domed roof is a good option for water mitigation. Metal roofing is a must for long term usage. These rubber roofs that they put on campers nowadays are a joke. All windows need rounded corners to reduce the stresses on the corners. Don't be tempted to simply nail it together. Screw and glue all timber. Simply, th8e build has to stand up to the stresses of road conditions. Having said all that, you can end up with something far better than anything commercially offered. Everything that I have seen on the market is nonsensical junk and purely criminal for the money they want for it. Recently, I went to a dealership and the models were falling apart from the manufacturer to the dealership. I applaud your efforts and you will have something you can not only enjoy but also repair if necessary.

  • @LoveHut4Life

    @LoveHut4Life

    We don’t go over 60, so we don’t take interstates; we also generally don’t drive if the winds are over 20mph. We have been forced to stay an extra day or 2 a couple of times. I suggest going slightly shorter, both because of winds and because of some bridges we know we will have to avoid in the North East. Semi trucks are fine as long as the driver is nice, and we let them pass every chance we get. Occasionally an asshole will purposely rock us, but that is rare. Most people are good. Good luck on your build. Shane and I are both willing to answer any questions you have. Hope to see you on the road some day! Some states require a permit for having a potty/bathroom, others require a camper registration. Some campgrounds exclude anything without an RIVA tag, meaning anything home built. The US is very lax about camper and trailer standards, other countries border on the ridiculous for standards of materials used in a build. From windows to lights, wiring to trailer tongue materials. Check your local regulations before building, and save your receipts for areas that charge sales tax on new builds.

    Hi, I remodeled a camper after turning my horse trailer into a one bedroom camper/horse trailer. I noticed the comment on electrical. I added one Renology 100 watt panel to the camper after wiring in more lights. I used a separate fuse box and charged my batteries off solar or a dual Charger/maintainer/optimizer set up that is always attached to the batteries. I plug it in to shore power or generator as needed per weather. The converter stated the battery only charged while attached to a running truck, not shore power, so it followed I needed something else. I have since sold the camper and am back adding finishing touches to the trailer. I have two 100 watt panels, a 20 amp MTTP controller and a 1500 watt inverter attached to my two 105 ah AGH batteries. I have a mini fridge hooked up to the shore power system or the inverter when away. I had to leave the trailer out all day in rainy weather today while getting tires. I was concerned on how well the batteries would do with limited light to the panels with meat in the little freezer. The controller showed my batteries at 89% when I got it home. I recently bought a 12v car fridge/ freezer and am anxious to compare usage rates between the apartment tiny fridge (600 watts; 900 watts when compressor comes on) vs the unknown usage of the 12v fridge. I boondocks a lot and can’t do ice runs to tow every other day.

    I've watched a BUNCH of these DIY truck camper builds. I'm planning to do one myself, though with a different construction method. That said, I do have a question for you. I see you built your camper to extend beyond the bounds of the truck bed. Every other camper I've seen built has been built to fit within the bed with the tailgate closed. I've always wondered why they didn't extend it to at least the length of the down tailgate. That's about 20" of valuable space they lose by not extending it. Do you know why someone might not want to extend and can you tell me why you've chosen to extend? My plan has always been to extend. It just never made sense to me to throw away 20" of space when space is already so limited.

  • @LoveHut4Life

    @LoveHut4Life

    4 жыл бұрын

    I assume they choose not to extend for 2 reasons. Parking is easier with a shorter structure, and they are worried about the strength of the tailgate. Also, we had to place wood underneath the house to level the bed with tailgate so that the weight was distributed better.

Also the weight distribution factor over the axels, we also lost the ability to have a Porch or landing for gear. I would choose to make it shorter... but that’s only because of technical difficulties it’s caused

    Thanks. We honestly have never even thought about that question lol.. fully loaded, our best guess was around 2,000 pounds, but that was just an estimate based off a list of the materials we used and what we put in. After the first 15,000 miles or so, we noticed the truck starting to slightly squat but nothing major. We’ve added around 500 pounds in a composting toilet, finishing out some trim, and a sturdier door, so we just put an air lift suspension kit on the truck that is supposed to raise our payload to 5,000 pounds.

    From NZ. Saw you on Jenna's pod & am ever so happy.. after lot of research, decided really didn't like what was on offer. What you have done will totally work for me.. an idea is shutters for big plastic window, maybe others, (which I'll be doing.) You have achieved such peace and beauty, combined with good old commonsense. Have actually had debate with mate re where do you put clothes can be worn again, your hanging idea brilliant. Thanks guys, all the best

    Did you weigh your truck before and then afterwards with the hut on it at a public scale? BTW, love the build !!

    No but we kept up with what we were putting in it.. our best guess is right at 2000 pounds. 170 days in and the truck isn’t showing any signs of it being too heavy:)

    Sure. We’ve been meaning to do a full video on it for a while now. We’ve improved it significantly since this video. It now holds ice for a full week, sometimes longer if it’s freezing at night, and is out performing the Orca in our back seat by days. What questions do you have?

    No. There is about 2 inches in between. We have since added a metal rack with hands that come down to the running boards for extra support. It has taken some minor repairs here and there, but the house is still holding up strong after 24,000 miles
