@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious If the dog can't be confined for 10 days you might want to consider post-exposure treatment. Rabies isn't likely but there is no cure so best to be cautious.

Off grid living, power is one of the hardest problems to solve in some ways. As a Pommie who travel around Oz back in early 2000’s with some proper 4x4 adventures before 12v systems were affordable it was the hardest thing to get used to. Great build, repurposed cart is perfect housing

Thanks Doug! Agreed. Generally speaking, in this age we take our common utilities for granted. Power, water, waste etc is all there, we just plug in. These little systems really make you aware of how much power you use and you have to manage it carefully. Most of the parts are very accessible nowadays and quite a bit easier to use too I guess.

Anderson Power connector (and #8 wire) is probably overkill for your PV input. Check the 'short-circuit' rating of you PV Cells (spec sheet) to determine max amps, probably just a few amps each. Like the build! A wiring diagram would have been a nice addition to your video...Cheers!

Thanks Tom. I think these panels are around 5 amps each at 36 volts (New). Yes 8g is an over kill but when I put the panels say 5m + away I like to have oversized cable to make up for voltage drop etc. Sorry I should have included a diagram, definitely would be useful.

Great utility power unit. I think you should change the wiring to the Battery Monitor with Shunt. I believe it needs to be permanently powered for the SOC monitoring. This is certainly the case if it was a Victron battery monitor shunt.

Thank you! I leave it powered the whole time. The breakers are just for protection because like you say, the battery monitor looses memory when turned off.

I made this machine for the Milk Shake Maker......Dammit now I'm gunna have to buy more tools to make another one for the hair straightener ;)

Scott, may I suggest that the Anderson [SB50] Grey plug for the solar input be changed to a light blue SB50 plug (and on the solar panel cable), this way there is no way to plug the solar into the wrong connector (top mounted Grey one), the different colour SB50 plugs have different 'keying' so they don't interchange, this alleviates incorrect plug-ins. Good job on the unit :-)

Hi Scott, good video, you covered each aspect really clearly. You were fitting many of the same style of components as I fitted into a camper van conversion. Big difference is in the van, the chassis is connected to the negative. It looked like you left the chassis floating. Any reason why? I'd have thought grounding it would add a little safety, since it prevents it from being able to go live from a fault.

Thanks Andrew. I think you are right about the chassis negative. I'll ground it too as it does no harm and only improves safety like you say. I have done a couple of vans also and used the Chassis as the common negative. Cheers.

Nice tidy unit mate well done, just need to build an acrylic rain coat for FNQ conditions. Also looking at the comparrison can you provide dollar value for both please?

Thanks Bruno! Rain coat! Mine cost me $1050 approx and the Bluetti retails now at $2700 approx (AUD). The Bluetti has twice the capacity and power of mine. I'm yet to give the Bluetti a thrashing but what I have seen so far it's a really nice unit.

You did alright getting the Victron for $100. I believe they retail for $300+ for that particular model.

Great project Scott. easier to get going than my 4 stroke generator. could you use lead acid deep cycle batteries for this setup? what would be the cost difference.

Thanks Damo! Yes, lead will do it also and it will be cheaper by maybe 2 or 3 hundred $, However lead is heavier, slower to get the full charge and you can only use about half it's rating. Lithium tech is getting cheaper and I think even now is a much better option. Hope your neck is getting better.

Sorry you only get to double the voltage or the wattage, you don't get to double both with only two panels. Nice looking workshop you have there.

Good question Robert. My system doesn't have any inbuilt RCD. You would need to plug in a portable RCD and use a ground stake, grounding the inverter to the stake similar to a portable gas powered generator. There may be better ways though.

Those Chineseium DC breakers are dangerous, they often weld themselves shut and catch fire. You'd be better off using traditional fuses
