My wife just got her first bow, and keeps losing her gold tips. She's been contemplating just quitting because we're spending money on the arrows. So I'm going to build this for her today, and hopefully she won't want to give it up, anymore. Thank y'all for this video!

Suggestion: paint the backstop to match the background behind it (green/trees, etc) That way when you're practicing you don't get used to this big black wall behind your target - which won't be there when you're out in the wild.

Backstop is nice, however, if you leave the sides and bottom unconnected the mat will absorb the energy from the arrows and probably the arrows will not penetrate the mat or not as much penetration. The arrows may even bounce off the mat and still prevent you from loosing arrows. Thanks for the video. Great design and lesson.

I have one of these mats waiting for me to build this tomorrow and I'm thinking about using your idea on this. I'm wondering though if it's just too heavy to support itself with only the top connected. There was one at the store that was cracked down the center just from being handled too roughly. They are tough, but I'm worried I'll destroy it without enough support.

@@privateinformation8364 we ended up using an old structure that came with the house and used to be for covering firewood. It's got a nice slanted roof on it so it helps protect my backstop from the elements a bit. We used the same hardware for mounting it though and it worked out great. I decided to put a couple down the sides but leave the bottom open. It works perfectly. Only problem with doing it that way was we had to lift the thing up and hold it while screwing it in. Not an easy task with something so heavy and floppy. Worth it in the end though and I finally have my own range to practice on. It's held up great so far too, but we'll see how it survives the winter.

Yes and also important to fasten on all sides because the mat itself is what will lend the entire structure integrity by keeping the frame square.

You have galvanized lag bolts in the firing field. Turn the thing around. A 2x4 is forgiving, unlike steel.

Home / backyard archery.... backstop is absolutely necessary. less the cost of replacing arrows...more the cost of safety. You would be stunned at how far an arrow travels, just 6,8" off the ground...even a bow at 42lbs... I'm so so glad I stumbled across this video. We have shut down our backyard practice range because of arrows 'just' missing the target...finding one at least 50yds beyond...it had hit an oak tree... luckily. others I'm certain crossed the road. behind us is thick heavy brush.. arrow skimmed right thru. One arrow passing thru 4" heavy corrugated cardboard... blowing off a vane. Never found it. I would suggest, securing the mat, just across the top and upper corners allowing the mat to absorb the impact as the arrow penetrates

For non-compund (horse bow and recurve bow) shooting I normaly use 1-2 sheets of discarded synthetic carpets that I picked up after some fair. I punched holes at on side and I just hang them with a strong paracord which I tie to nearby trees or, if shooting indoors, to concrete pillars. They work great. Even if I use just one sheet and an arrow passes through, it doesn't fly off too far. I am looking for a diy backstop I could pack in the trunk of my car and carry it in a backpack to a remote uninhabited spot where I can practice shooting while running, jumping and rolling without having to search for stray arrows afterwards. So far, I found no way around the €200.00+ backstop net from local archery dealer. 😢

Good idea. Ive lost all but 1 arrow trying to sight in my crossbow scope . I can see them hit the ground but they are getting burried in the hill side some where going under the leaves. I thought about useing metal detector cause it should pickk up on the pps and broadheads but people who lived here before me dumped trash out in the woods plus the soil is alot of roots tightly compacted.

(I used y'all to show I even have some words that signify my location, LOL, the South - Florida) My apologies, I watched twice to see if I just missed it . . . what mat is that? Is that the fatigue mat from Harbor Freight/Tractor supply? and thank you, we occasionally miss just a "scoatch" (a tiny amount) but i will add "yeet" to the discussions now. 🙂 Thanks for your DIY project, good seeing others find solutions and sharing their way. 🏹

I,d have to get 4 horse mats & sandwich them all together , I,m actually looking to make something maybe 10 foot tall & 8 foot wide that stays outdoors all year long & is very weather durable year after year . I need something that tall & wide so I can shoot a range of different size targets with & hight from Buffalo & elk to squirrel & bird . I even thought about buying full size zombie 3D targets like 6 foot tall & air brushing them in black light paint & even shooting at night with lighted arrow knocks that might be fun .

I used 6 mats to make my backstop after not returning my slider to the top, i sent an arrow into my neighbors property. I did 3 12ft 4x4s with 2x4s across it. Its 15ft wide by 9 feet tall(3 feet in the ground). It's been amazing and stops 4mm arrows and has been in the weather for 3 years with little signs of wear. I guess I'll get 7-10 years out of the mats full weather all year long.

Great video, thanks guys! Also like the ideas in the comment of camouflaging it as to not get used to shooting at a black rectangle and maybe not connecting the mat to the bottom. Just would've appreciated a more detailed explanation about how you fixed the wheels on to the backstop. A double threaded rod? That short? Is that widely available in DIY-shops? Did you get it where you got the wheels, so it definitely fitted the thread of the wheels? Otherwise, I'll definitely be building one of those, cheers!
