Hi guy's, I have made many different DIY targets over the years, I have never used the skins you describe from 3rd hand ect. but what I have used and still use is lumber wraps. You build your frame the same but just use the lumber wraps as skins and stuffing. I have a 200 lb crossbow and they stop the bolts from that just fine. In case you don't know what I mean by lumber wraps, I mean the tarps lumber ships with, most lumber yards are just happy to give you all you want, you may have to travel to several lumber yards to get enough, but the price is right. Give it a try it works.

That will definitely work as the skins only hold the clothing in place. as you just stated you have made many over the years. Third Hand Archery Range Target Skins will last many years so one doesn't have to rebuild the targets.

Good idea! I shoot micro diameter shafts like he has, with the little lip from the outserts. They catch on woven material like he shows trying to pull them out of his skin. I wonder if stuffing the whole target with woven material would make pulling those arrows an absolute nightmare

I have a target from American Whitetail called the cube, it has a foam outer with a large bag stuffed with fabric scraps inside. Easiest target to remove arrows with FP from. Had it for several years (since 2015)and it's still great. Has a broadhead core that can be swapped in replacing the cloth filled bag. I was surprised how well the cloth stops arrows and how easy it is to remove. I have made several targets from grocery bags stuffed into large dog food bags that work well at stopping arrows and are fairly easy to remove arrows from.

Have you ever thought about using layers of carpet behind the shins without packing it with clothes and see how that works? I have a friend that built a similar target and he just used about 7 layers of carpet and he has used it for 10 years.

I have found that using a grinder or file to taper the side of the field point that snugs to the insert helps with removal of those micro diameter shafts.

I just completed my DIY Target after watching your video several times. It is almost complete now, but need to finish collecting old clothing to finish it out. I ended up using treated 2 x 12's and 2 x 8's because they only cost a little bit more than untreated lumber. I also doubled the feet thickness so I could add castors for rolling it around the garage and outside on the driveway if I need to. I used castors that could support 350#s each. I used the same black backing as you did. I have collected most of my old clothing from a local hospice store for $2.00 a bag (about 25#'s in each bag). My total cost was $258.26. I think this is going to be a great target. Your video was extremely helpful. Thanks!

I did the same. I just used Waste Fabrics. Allot of clothes factories have cut off threads which is sold to companies cleaning oil spills. It is sold in 25kg bales. I used 2.5 bales to fill my target and it works well. I have been using it over a year with extensive use and it holds up fine. Changed the face once, but the bale of threads stays constant.

Do you have a source for some of this? I can find some more retail-oriented waste scrap places, not nothing selling in bales. Maybe you're close to the factories, which is probably easier to source.

Only thing with that is those outserts makes it pull hard almost like your gonna pull the outserts off arrow why i stopped shooting at a bag target but looks great and if nothing else be a good back stop for those longer shots

I bet a couple layers of synthetic roofing paper, or house wrap would work good. Stuff it with old couch cushions, or old tarps or something. Cool project... got my brain spinning on this one!

other that leaving it outside and getting wet & UV rays, clothes work the best. Plastics leave film & make arrow removal more difficult.

I bought the black fabric at the local hardware store, got the skins from Third Hand Archery, and the stuffing from Goodwill.

Small town "goodwill" places and 2nd hand stores often will GIVE you clothes they don't want. I you are going to leave it outside for months or year round it would be best to cover it with a tarp and bungee cords when not in use.

That's a great option. Around where I live there are so many people that things which don't sell in the normal Goodwills just get sent over to the outlet stores.

Funny you mention using old clothes. My first arrow stop was a cardboard box filled with old clothes and an old life jacket.

Hi! Great video, been thinking about doing this myself and was hoping you would be kind enough to answer: what poundage are your bows? My main concern is that I will be shooting a compound at around #70 so I'm worrying if I have to load a shit ton of cloths in that. Also did you rip the fabric to smaller pieces? I did some testing and plastic bags and old bed sheets ripped to about 2" wide strips compressed really nicely and didn't make a cardboard box bulge badly compared to larger pieces.

I shoot bows between 65 and 75 pounds generally, so I wouldn't be concerned shooting 70 at 30. I didn't tear up any of the fabric ahead of time; just stuffed it into the top.

Where did you get the blueprint for building it??? Do you think it would work well for 4H archery club. I see the video was 7 months ago. How is it holding up still??

The rough plans are included with the target skins from Third Hand. This would be good for a 4H type club since it is pretty low maintenance and arrow removal is easy. Mine is still holding up. The front face is fairly torn up from me shooting systems with outserts or half-outs, but it still stops the arrows everytime. I think as long as it is still able to hold the clothes in place, it will stop arrows.

Hey great job!! Would this be ok for outside use in really windy conditions?

I haven't weighed it, but the finished stand is quite heavy. If you wanted it to be mobile installing wheels would be something to look into. Also, building some type of awning would help if used outside to keep as much water out as possible with all of the materials stuffed inside.

The skins just hold the media in place and give one a flat surface to pin a target on. 12" deep will stop 400 gr arrows up to 350 fps regardless compound bow or cross bow. If one is shooting a faster bow just increase the depth of the target. Using 2 @ 2''x10'' will give one a 19'' deep target that will stop a 400 gr arrow up to 450 fps.

What recurve bow is that hanging on the target?

It's an RK1, a co-branded bow from Striker and New Breed. Striker makes the limbs and New Breed machines the riser. I'm going to be posting a review on it shortly.

What is the name of the surface material you replaced away from tarp?

The skins hold the inside material in place. We built 2 for the ATA show last week 4'x4'x18" deep. It took shots in the Scorpyd crossbow booth over 400fps with 400gr arrows for 3 days at ten yards away without a single passthrough. Yeah, it will stop them.

You can stuff that box...let it belly out. Built another shallow box attached to the front using g flat material....li,e foam.

So how's the target holding up? It's been almost a year... was looking forward to your follow up video but haven't seen it yet? I've built one myself almost the same dimensions prior to locating your video... I tried stuffing with plastic originally and packed it so tight it was bulging the entire target! However, shooting 70lbs on my Mathews Triax with 305fps I lost an arrow :( n' resulted back to my old 18"x18" block until I could finish it right lol... I've started stuffing it with clothing but was unsuccessful locating enough cloth to do so with and my budget did not allow me to go to a goodwill like you advised... But, I just went to a 3d shoot this past Sunday and the people running the shoot had recently replaced their old targets with new 4ftx4ft block targets and luckily gave me the old targets with old carhartt stuffing inside... I'm planning Sunday when the temperatures come up about 60 to finally finish my build! I was going to purchase some 3rd hand archery skins, but the tarps that are on these old targets are in really good shape and I may utilize them until they ware out... Anyhow any advise until then? BTW Mine is outside and I love your awning Idea I may use that! I built it with holes at the bottom to drain any water that leaked in but also wrapped it with tarps to attempt to make it waterproof as possible! Hopefully I'll get a video up soon about mine! Thnx for the video!

Go to your local screen printing company and ask them for their used up strike offs or test print clothing they tend to have piles of stuff they will gladly give away

Heads up goodwill will give you clothing that they are not planning to sell People donate far more than they are able to sell - people also donate clothing in condition that is not able to be resold

It’s the 3rd hand skin itself that makes these a real pain in the butt. How can you make it easier to pull arrows out with arrow, insert, and point, those fibers of the skins just grab the smallest discrepancy in diameters and it results in pulled inserts and points.

I have 2 questions for you sir, How is the target holding up now? I noticed you’ve got a new stabilizer on now from the one in your diy video. Is that a new diy?

The one in this video was a DIY lookalike of the Quivalizer, but currently I use a carbon front and side bar set up from TAP. I show those in my newer stabilizer testing video.

Have not replaced anything yet, but it's definitely showing signs of heavy use and bowing out quite a bit from sag. Its still stopping arrows though.

99 cents a pound ?? That’s close to a 100$ dollars. Plus the cost of all the materials is way over what something like this should cost. Big boy Achery targets google it. For 100$ you can get a way better target. Good video though it would be a great idea if you didn’t have to pay for the clothes.

Still going strong. Had to spin it around 180 a time or to when it started bulging in the back but still stopping arrows.

Need way more building of the target and a lot LESS talking.
