DIY Overland Truck Camper Part 16 (Loft Bed)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Sorry for the delay. But I'm afraid its that time of year. The rain is here and the sun doesn't like to come out that often. Luckily I have enough batteries for my Ryobi tools to keep them going. And hopefully I get a few days of sun, so I can get them all back to full charge. Other then my table saw, everything else I am using for this project has been battery powered(HINT HINT RYOBI). A few small solar panels have been keeping my battery charged to keep up with all my small jobs.
So this was a learning curve for me. The chisel was used too quickly and I should have used the router for the first 3 passes. Then cut the rest. Basically this is a groove for the frame to sit on. And it works great. Just doesn't look as clean as I would like it too.
The good news for me is that my next step is picking out the tent material. Its between Vinyl, Canvas. And the decision at this moment is honestly based on what will be available. But if you guys actually read these things and would love to share your two cents I am all ears. And even if there is another material I am not thinking about I am willing to give it a shot.
So I started a website to keep track of all the stuff I'm using to build this camper. I keep some pricing, along with a quick thought on the product. I will update it as I use the products. If there is something you wants to see, just send me an email from the site and I will be glad to add it. And hopefully next year I can get my shop and start a few other projects such as Camper 2.0. Thanks again for watching. Site link is below.

Yeah. You can really see where I did the wrong thing at first and took a while to get the router going for all of it. I just didn't want to let the chisel idea go.

Yeah. The original plan was to open both sides. But when I went with the one side I figured using the back meant I could stand up in it.

This is something my wife fears I may try, lol. Your engineering techniques are interesting to watch unfold and there are some good ideas. My 2 cents may not apply since I'm in Florida and have different environment concerns, but moisture will will build up in there with humans present and there will be a need to ventilate it out. Are you considering a roof vent and then some other window to allow fresh air in while expelling humid air?

So I think this is something you would need to worry about almost anywhere. I just plugged up the remaining gaps on the bottom so there is less and less circulation each time I work on it. My roof is large enough for 4 solar panels that I have waiting in my shed. But as someone who has owned a fantastic fan on previous trailers I know the great benefits it can bring. I am not decided yet on if I'll install a roof fan. Or a wall fan. I'm even looking at trying some small fans made for cooling cabinets or even some sort of mix with PC fans. But it will definitely have some sort of circulation. It's well worth the 2 cents since I think it will change the comfort level completely. And once I take it out to some of our secluded campgrounds and post that online, your wife may be convincing you to build one.

For the rear pop top how long is each section of wood in the pop up mechanism? And do you plan on doing the same in the front. I’m building something similar not sure on size or what hinges to use. Thanks.

I don't know the length and no longer have the camper to measure. I know they were just cut to match and then adjusted by eye when placing them. My original plan was to do the same at the front and ended up with just doing a triangular build to add some strength.

This has been a great project to watch. I have been considering a build like this myself and I have two areas of concern. I would like your take on them based on your experience so far: 1) Supporting the cantilevered bed over the cab concerns me. There will be down pressure from occupants slowing pushing the structure toward the cab. Also, it will have upward pressure when it acts as an airfoil while traveling at highway speeds. My question is have you noticed either of these two issues thus far with your design? 2) The open access port at the front (cab rear window access) would seem to me a way for rain to enter the dry bed area especially while traveling. Are you planning on using some kind of gasket to seal around the opening in the final design? I was thinking something simple like an inner tube can be inflated to seal around that opening between the shell and the cab but perhaps it's not an issue in practice. Thank you!

Thank you. It's been a blast so far. As per your questions. 1) I haven't noticed anything so far. I was concerned with the space between the cab and the bunk over. And have taken it on the highway with no issues. And also drive near highway speeds on a daily basis thanks to the speed limits near me. And haven't run into any issues. I also plan on adding some more tie down points on the inside to help it stay where it is. I love redundancies. And would rather have more then I need. I've also had all my weight over the cab itself and it didn't move at all. This is probably due to the 2x4 spanning the whole length of the camper and bolted down. This is part of what I'll be watching over the next year of testing before making the final camper. 2. I've built a swinging door that fits into that opening(it was even Line-X'd) and it will also be sealed later. I have the material to give it a proper seal. But I'm waiting out for a bit to see how everything works out and how I want to place it. I did install the door this past weekend. I did not film this process but will show all the changes once I finish the canvas and go out for its first real trip. I do like the inner tube idea. That would make for a solid seal.

At first I was trying to design a sort of folding wood side. I switched it to canvas. But it seems hard to get proper canvas where I am right now. So if I don't get a supply soon I may switch back to some sort of panel system.
