I know it sounds funny, but a outhouse door opens in. You have to close the door to use the pooper. But in the hot of the summer you hold the door open to get the breeze. If someone is coming you can close the door fast. I know to much as you can see. I was 6 years old before the house we lived in had indoor plumbing.

"The deeper it is the longer it last" this statement is key. We in Trinidad use 2 oil barrels one on the other. The bottoms are cut out and water soaks away. 2 barrels equals 8 feet so it will last very long and u can build the top extra nice and beautiful

Need to keep a bucket of lime to sprinkle in the hole, helps keep bugs and damn flies down. Lived lots of places with an outhouse as a child and growing up, always sprinkle lime in it.

At 9 yrs old I lived in a house with no indoor plumbing at all. The happiest day of my childhood was when I flushed our toilet the first time. No more carrying an indoor pot to empty and wash daily.

looks good. My variation is a rear door i put a plastic tote in there and a scoop of mulch to start. Mulch is added after use. I then pull out the tote and dump into another larger bin with wheels and that gets dumped in a hole before long it is soil. Yes more steps I get that.

  • @earthwizz

Nice job. If you put a tube liner in the hole with the bottom of it below the vent exit you can create a thermal syphon with fresh air entering the seat hole and you will rarely have smells. I take it the vent pipe is at seat level so a 6-12 inch tube liner would be fine.

You are going to get water or snow blowing in from those openings around the roof line. Get a piece of aluminum roofing and size it so it overhangs at least 6 to 12 inches wider all around the roof. DONE

1981pjt there is. When you go in the dark you want enough light to see where you sit isn't on a spider. And not so much others can look in. Also. My uncle told me that there was a moon to remind folks to pull up their britches before standing up or they would "moon" anyone trying to see if anyone was in there.
