Thank you so much, Debbie! It was so much fun to add this little twist to one of my favorite techniques. I always like to say that ill take some risks so you all can decide what things you might want to try. ♥️
i started knitting about a year ago and my grandma (who doesn't knit much anymore) sent me a small part of her stash over the holidays, including 250g of a 70% wool/30% nylon yarn in some kind of off white/cream colour which i'm not crazy about but this popped up in my youtube recs and now i'm contemplating trying to dye it :D

YES! You can easily start playing with dyeing using food coloring and vinegar in your kitchen (artificial food coloring - I recommend the Wilton color right system which you can frequently get with a coupon at big craft stores) That is how I got started before transitioning more to commercial dyes.
this is making me think of spaghetti with pomodoro sauce. Ok, I'm off to cook something LOL
I love that burnt orange color!

Since this is a gradient technique on its own, I might not do it unless I was trying to layer another type of color on some minis I already had. BUT I was super curious to see if I could do this and was thrilled with how it turned out!

I really like the idea of doing the minis with the larger cakes. I hope you get the opportunity to knit up one of the sets so people can see the effect. (Or have someone knit it up for you.) There are so many patterns right now that call for gradient yarns, such as shawls with lots of different stitch patterns. The longer stretches of color in the large cakes would be really intriguing with the shorter repeats of the mini skeins. Really nice idea. (It kind of reminds me of fractal spinning.)

Yes, or just some acrylic yarn ties.
That yarn turned out gorgeous! When I wind my skeins I take a large darning needle and pull the tail through the outside of the cake. Wouldn't that me easier when you dye?
I have not dyed anything, but love to try it. Really liked the results. :) P.S. New subscriber. lol :)

Welcome to the channel! I got started with food coloring and vinegar and yarn that was 20% wool / 80% acrylic. If you just want to experiment, I recommend breaking the yarn down into some miniskeins to make the yarn stretch farther until you figure out what techniques you like the best. :D

If you want more level dyeing use some type of agitation. That’s how I do it in my lab at work.

For sure - for more even color coverage movement and more water volume help. I don't really want the color to be even here - the goal is some amount of asymmetry. You also need to be careful moving some types of yarn (especially if it is not superwash) in hot water too much since it can cause felting.
Beautiful! It is so interesting to see the colouring from the beginning to the end. And i love how good you explain the method and why things happends like they do! I feel like i am learning a lot
Beautiful!! I wonder what would have happened if you would have wound the mini skeins simultaneously instead of consecutively..😊

Oooo... I'm not sure. That would be a little... annoying to unravel. ;) I've done two strands together before but more than that might be a little tricky... but not impossible.

Thank you, and can you tell me what to add with saffron and white vinegar, please
@ChemKnitsTutorials
3 жыл бұрын
This dye isn't actually Saffron the real spice, this is a Dharma acid dye called "Saffron Spice" which is that warm orange color. I should have the whole recipe in the video description.
It would have been interesting to see something made out of this. Why don't you post it when you've made a scarf or something. That's be fun.

I am overdye for another finished objects post. Unfortunately I don't have TONS of pictures since I sell a lot of the yarn that I dye so it is up to the customers to share the finished objects. There is a picture on my instagram page (@chemknits) with all of the chanukah minis all in one crochet project.
What would happen to the color way if you put a wire mesh tube in the middle of the skeins before dying it. Would it give you a better color coverage
@ChemKnitsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
I think that this would provide more color coverage on the inside. However, one of the perks of this technique is the uneven color coverage. BUT you might get some more fun reverse speckles.... so I might need to find a meshy tube!
Are these rinsed at some stage? Thank you for a lovely tutorial! :)
@ChemKnitsTutorials

Yes. I usually rinse the yarn right after dyeing and then wash once I unwind the yarn cakes.

@@ChemKnitsTutorials Thank you :)
Does yarn shrink when you boil it? And does it became more ruff? Thanks
@ChemKnitsTutorials
4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tested the shrinkage. I have noticed that some yarns become more "fluffy" with dyeing, which could result in a shorter length, but the yarn should still block out the same. Sometimes bare yarn suppliers plan the yardage around the yarn dyed versus the yarn in the skein, but I'm not sure if all companies do this. As for texture, most yarn doesn't change the texture much with the dyeing. If it does I will always mention it in my conclusions!
Would the mesh bags from onions & oranges help contain the loose ends of cakes?

This would likely be really helpful. I think I didn't anticipate the unraveling so that was my downfall. thanfully they weren't too tangled. I didn't have to cut anything to resolve them. Phew!
Hi there. You refer to a spin dryer, would you please explain what that is please. Many thanks Jo. X
@ChemKnitsTutorials
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jo - It is a stand alone device similar to what some gyms have for swim suits. It is like a spin cycle on a washing machine and removes liquid really quickly so things can dry faster. Here is the review of the one I use kzread.info/dash/bejne/lXiB0o-qqpS_lpc.html (This model was discontinued shortly after the company gave it to me so I don't mention the brand very often.) It lives in my kitchen full time and means I drip less around my house. It is something I didn't know I needed and now that I have it..... ti is amazing! I did use a salad spinner a bit before this.

Could you over dye this with a pink and get more of a coral color?
@ChemKnitsTutorials
