How to Dye Gradient or Ombre Yarn

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This tutorial will show you how to dye yarn in a single, long gradient. This technique is a lot of fun, and can produce some really amazing results. I apologize about the blurriness in the beginning, the steam was throwing things off! Hopefully you can still get a good idea of the process. If you decided to try it out, I'd love to see what you make! Feel free to post a photo on my Facebook page: / chaleurlife

I appreciate the fact that you've taken the time and effort to create a tutorial for those of interested in indie dyeing! Don't worry about the negative comments because I think that despite the blurriness issues I was able to get the basic idea which is really the point of this tutorial!

Wow didn't remember watching this 6 years ago! and love it just as much. Before you unwind it you can give it another go by inserting a syringe into various places in the ball to randomly add a color, then wash again and then unwind. Will give a different dimension. It always turns out as it wants to for the most part, that is dye's gift of surprise! that I love.

I had not one negative thought during the viewing of this tutorial. Than I read the comments. Gosh, people are way too picky. Any way, you made a solar eclipse with your yarn! Awesome coloring and I will easily do one very similar, as I learned how by watchin with out my aversions in the way, which, if you think about it, is a good way to go through life.

FYI, the yarn was pre-soaked by watching. That usually keeps a lot of dye from getting to the inner layers. If the yarn was dry, you would get a completely different effect. Me, personally, I would do a light simmer to avoid felting the yarn. She doesn't say how much vinegar she used, I use 4 to 5 tablespoons with about a teaspoon of dye. You did awesome here, I'm going to try the same colors.

Thanks for the video - interesting effects from having the yarn in a ball! I have always read or been told, to never never wring yarn when it is wet - your yarn has not pulled out to look like string from wringing it? Interesting. I squeeze mine dry, then wrap in a towel and sit on it for a minute or two, then arrange it loosely on the ironing board in front of the room fan. Small amounts dry in minutes - large amounts an hour or two. Thanks again.

Great video...only a few questions. How much water? How much vinegar?? Is it white vinegar?? what brand gel color is it that you used?? Is it ok to use Tulip one step tie dye paint instead?? You kept saying wool....Can this technique only be done with wool yarn, or can I use 3ply sport weight. What if the person I want to make this for is allergic to wool?? Thank You. Your yarn on the video turned out sooooo beautiful ☺

Josie Ojeda The amount of water and dye really does vary, so I can't help with that. It looks like she was using Wilton food dye gels, but you can use any food coloring. She mentions wool because this type of dying only works on animal fibers like wool, alpaca, mohair, etc. It will not work on artificial fibers or plant fibers like cotton. Sport weight or 3 ply refers to the size of the yarn, not the fiber content. And unfortunately, if the person is allergic to wool, this might not be the project for them. You could check with them and see if they're allergic to all animal fibers, or if there are any they can use. Hope this helps!

Cotton yarns will have pale colors in acid dyes. You need soda ash to set the color in cotton. There are lots of good tutorials online for dyeing other types of fibers. The method being used here works with protein fibers such as wool and silk.
