DIY Fireplace Remodel Pt 2: Shiplap, Painting and More!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Quickly fixed audio issues and reuploaded - Thanks to those that pointed it out*
This is the second part of the living room fireplace remodel. In this video, I put shiplap on the wall surrounded by a frame. Then, I paint the entire thing as well as the crown molding in the room. Finally, I wire up all the electrical and reinstall the baseboards. Enjoy!
Stay tuned for part 3 where I build a custom mantle to secretly house all the electronics!

    im a painter and decorator..bit of healthy advice..to cover the knots in any wood you want to use a product called zinsser. You apply it before any undercoat, primer or base coat and it will ensure the knots wont re-appear. Otherwise in a few weeks time..the knots will come back through. fireplace looks awesome though! 😀

    Varnish over knots and they will not come through your paint. I noticed that you framed your hearth with softwood, it will dent easily if ever his with vacuum cleaners, firewood, and other fireplace tools. If I recall some states require high ambeint electrical insulated wiring around fireplaces. NIce all-around job. Just stumbled into your channel. It's one of the best out there on KZread and I see a lot of them. Your a very talented young man, major kudos to you. p.r.morehouse (author)

    I think the fireplace would happen even more awesome if you would have put a electric fireplace insert in it wouldn't be that hard to run the wiring. I've had one for eight or nine years I love it they even make them make a popping sound like wood burning effects thing. Safer than any wood burning fireplace will ever be

    Take the shiplap down and cut the holes out for the electric box

  • @Riverafo821
    @Riverafo8214 жыл бұрын

    You could have used PL glue on each shiplap and a finish nailer instead of screws...to cut the time of filling and sanding. You could have used a 2 gang box for the top and bottom outlet...more cleaner looking...that attic is pretty bad...I would have a licensed electrician check that..just to be on the safe side ...but over all it looks good ...

    Man, you have a electrical mess! Is it allowed in your country to leave electrical wires everywhere in the attic? We always put them neatly together in the PVC conduits. In straight lines.

  • @fd3871

    @fd3871

    4 жыл бұрын

    old retrofit homes have tons of junction boxes and mixed wiring. it is a nightmare; surprised more of them don't burn down tbh. generally, new home wiring is pretty neatly done and has few, if any, junction boxes, but we typically don't put wires in conduit in residential construction (usually only seen in commercial) however in some jurisdictions it is more common to run wire in metal conduit. This is more common in brick and mortar homes prone to hurricanes.

    Ben I want to commend you on this series! I inadvertently started at phase 3, I went back and am just starting p 2. Just one question for me; What is your measurement from the bottom of the mantel to the top of the firebox? I am in the research phase of going from a 61” fp surround to 79” to accommodate a bigger flat screen. My number one goal is to hang the new mantel as far down as I can get away with to pass inspection if I ever sell my home. How low can I get away with! It’s a gas non-vented (rarely used). Sidenote. I watched a dozen or so videos, you are far and away the most interesting to me. Do them all just like this one love the detail!

  • @BenTardif

    @BenTardif

    The measurement you asked for is about 21” but I don’t know if that conflicts with any specific code. We have yet to light our fireplace (and don’t ever plan to).

    Sorry but you are dangerous. Use a push stick when you use the saw and the metal box you install probably has sharp edges which could cut the wire and cause a short or fire. That attic looks like a good place for a fire. Nice job in the design.
