DIY Drawer Dividers for Desk Organizing (Tips and Tricks)

Using nothing but cardstock (plain or patterned) and glue, you can create some pretty DIY drawer dividers in a matter of minutes that will tame your drawer-mess monster.
This is a generic tutorial where I show you an idea for you to organize any drawer and not just one like mine. Keep in mind that each person understands differently and it's impossible for me to please everyone's style. So what I did in this video is to explain how you can get your own measurements and go from there to create any size of dividers you need. All the minor details of this tutorial can be found on my blog post linked below.
If you like this project don't forget to give a thumbs up and Subscribe for future videos.
Supplies:
Cardstock (plain or scrapbook cardstock work perfectly)
Glue
Cutter and scissors
Pencil.

  • @thecraftingnookds

    @thecraftingnookds

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much Shona, yeah I've heard that. The thing is I have no way to give a measurement that might get in conflict with some viewers. The way I tried to explain is so each person can make this idea work whatever drawer they have. Every measurement is adaptable to everyone's desire, taller, shorter, larger smaller. If I give measurements it might not fit perfectly unless by coincidence you have the same drawer. In the post linked in the description, I share a more detailed reference on how to create the layout and measurements. Hope it helps! Sending love and hugs!

    Cherry, THANK YOU SO much for your input. Ok, to be honest boxes always work but it's really hard to find sizes that will fill up your drawer without weird empty spaces. But since this is something that is up to each person it will depend on the needs and expectations. In my case, because of how my brain works I so hate when I get those uneven spaces and that's why I decided to go for my OWN dividers so I can control every space in my drawers. Control freak? oh yeah! LOL. Creativity is the limit and if you happen to have boxes that will fit your spaces the go for it. You can decorate your boxes, or paint them or just wrapped them. Here is what makes you feel happy! My drawers definitely make me feel happy each time I open them. It's been over 6 months and they are still organized!!!! Hope this helps! Hugs

    Won't the items in the back be hard to access, especially if they're small like that tape in the top drawer?

  • @thecraftingnookds

    @thecraftingnookds

    5 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question! I always set items to be put at the back of my drawers when I know I don't use them frequently. All those tapes are replacements for my tape holder. And the wires are also seldom used. I prioritize things, so important things get easier to take and put back and less important items won't take up important spaces. BUT the thing is that since this is completely custom, you can build your dividers and place them in any order you want. So imagination is the limit! Let me know how it goes! hugs

    Terrific ideas! Love how you plan where everything goes, and KNOW where everything goes, before you start! Might suggest leaving some space empty, for growth. Seeing an organized area that's already full, tires me. Question: what's that stuff you keep spraying on the paper?

  • @thecraftingnookds

    @thecraftingnookds

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so so much! I love keeping things organized and know where to find them. And yes, the key is planing well before doing anything else! Your suggestion is very wise! I didn't feel the need because I'm quite the opposite LOL. I don't like empty spaces but that suggestion might be a great idea for many viewers THANK YOU! So far, it's been over a year since I organized these drawers and I haven't changed anything much. A couple of things replaced by others but that's it. So far the best time investment LOL. Regarding your question, not sure what you mean by spraying, do you mean the yellow tube? If so, that's contact glue. But you can use your favorite glue as long as it doesn't wrinkle the cardstock. Thank you again! Have a great day!

    Sorry to hear that. What part was confusing? A more detailed tutorial is on the blog just in case. As for the time, well if you make as many as I did, it could take you a couple hours yes. Each divider took me about 5 minutes to make + planning and organization. It all depends on your goal. In my case, it was making something cute and really low budget. Buying containers and dividers not always offer all my "must haves" so I decided to create these custom dividers and share for those who think alike. There is no perfect solution for everyone but I appreciate your feedback! Hugs!

    Good idea in theory. Needed more info measurements wise, would have been more helpful/informative if you had included the measurements you used on your example. Blog didn't give much more info either

    Thank you for your feedback. The thing is I can't give measurements because it's supposed to fit each people's needs. My drawer is not the same size as everyone else's and not everyone else has the same things to organize and store. That's why in the video and blog post I start with a cardstock to create and simulate the size of the drawer and organized my stuff on that cardstock and then design the spaces. That's what all that is made for so you create your own measurements to fit your needs. But that's ok, maybe this kind of project is not your style! Hugs!

    @@tamikamoana I totally understand and appreciate the feedback. The sizes you need are in your drawer. If I give you my sizes, they might not fit your drawer properly. Just follow the tutorial. When you have the design of your drawer and space placements drawn in the paper, just measure each space minus about 2mm and start creating the dividers. Hope this helps! Hugs!

    @@thecraftingnookds you just need some examples or voice in this vedio for better understanding of others like if you take 2 cm tell us that i have taken 2 cm you can take according to your drawer

    @@manya4803 Thank you for your input, I so appreciate it. I totally understand your point and I'm sorry it didn't work for you. The thing is that I try my best to help with my videos but I don't use voice in any of my videos, this is my style of videos (except screen-sharing). For more detailed instructions and even layouts, you can check out the blog post linked in the description box. Just to make something clear it's not 2cm, it's 2mm in order to replace the cardstock thickness. Keep in mind that each person understands differently and it's impossible for me to please everyone's style. I'm sure that if I give measurements, even if it's just as a sample, a lot of people will say they tried and didn't fit, so it would be my fault as much as I explained it. So what I did in this video is to explain how you can get your own measurements and go from there to create any size of dividers you need. hugs!

    Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, you are totally right. The actual 2 reasons I have to choose this kind of organization are 1. It's definitely more inexpensive and 2. Because I hate having weird spaces left in the drawers. It's almost impossible to find plastic organizers that will fit perfectly inside the drawers (unless you buy everything at IKEA LOL) So you always get those blank spaces that cause things to move around. Yes, I'm that kind of control freak LOL. Depending on how many dividers you want or need it might take a few hours to have it done, but then you will have years of organization. So for me, it's so worth it. Thank you so so much for stopping by.

    Yup, you are right there! I have a Silhouette but for the sake of the tutorial and that not everyone has a cutting machine I explained how to make them by hand! However, since I changed the Desk drawers recently, I might use the silhouette for the divider patterns and make and update video but now made using a cutting machine! Thanks for the idea!
