Great reaction. The official video cuts a full section of the song ... possibly for sensible reasons. If you want to get the full meaning of the track though it's necessary. Word of warning though, it's pretty dark.

David Draiman really delivers a gritty and unnerving vocal when it's called for. The key element in this song's success, as you pointed out, is its rhythmic drive. The hook is very chantable/singable as well. Great reaction, Jen! I'm so proud of you for braving it. Keep the great mix coming. Also, congrats on the album release. In case someone hasn't said it yet, David Draiman trained as a kid to be a cantor in the orthadox jewish community he grew up in. That's where the "classically trained" techniques come from (vibrato, etc), along with a few other stylistic things that helped make him exceptional and unique as a vocalist in the world of Metal. I'd recommend you spend some time exploring Disturbed's work in general (you seem to dig it!), and in a few months go back and re-watch The Sound of Silence. You'll have a deeper appreciation for what an impact that made for their existing fans when they put it out. (I cried. So good. Augh.)

Great video and reaction! An aspect in metal that you may have noticed with this one is that many of the held notes and much of the sound hovering happens on a consonant like the nnn sound as well as the vowels. This is because the voice is often used as "just another instrument" in metal so it helps to be good at staccato and holding on consonants to introduce a vocal rhythm and open/leave space for other instruments and sounds. It is also why the vocals are often more buried in the mix - the story and emotion is told as much through the overarching sound of all combined instruments as it is through the words of the song - which is why heavier metal genres like death metal can have nearly incomprehensible singing but still be enjoyed.

Nothing but Good Luck with the new Album, Jenn. And everyone else involved in that project. Should be GREAT. And now,,, ok. You have reacted to Down with the Sickness. This is the Clean - er version of the songs, and the version that I believe was a better version for you to react to. Not that the other version is needing a separate reaction, it just SHOWS why it is a HEAVY METAL song. LOL, I'm trying to say it nicely. Anyway, Great reaction to THIS Post. And thank you for sharing it with us.

There was about a minute of the song that was cut out. It’s basically David yelling and cursing at his mother.

David Draiman was trained by one of the first "Metal" specialized vocal coaches, don't remember her name unfortunately, who found that many Metal performers gave themselves permanent vocal cord damage from singing. She took on Disturbed, and is David's coach. Please look her up, perhaps you could figure / trade techniques. Thanks!! Great reaction.

Hey Jen, the 25th is my birthday! So your album is a nice birthday surprise. I enjoyed your analysis. Did you pause too often? Nah, I'm here for the analysis at least as much as for the reaction. Always happy to learn something new. And since you like diversity in voices, I will again recommend to look into Ayreon. There are even a ton of live videos. The Ayreon Universe show from 2017 has a lot of musical and vocal diversity, since there are 16 vocalists featured in the concert. As a starting point I would suggest "The Eye Of Ra" (kzread.info/dash/bejne/lYGllsucgNitkZs.html) which is the last song of the concert, or "Everybody Dies" (kzread.info/dash/bejne/a3V1utaOlLCdqKg.html). Both songs have multiple vocalists. The whole show is really good and never gets boring. If you are interested, the whole show as a playlist is here: kzread.info/head/PLJGn3wi7b7b606GfoKAdOgm6rtX9OliRc

16:42 you said what David did was classical kind of singing…I’m sure I’m not the first to tell you he was Classically trained as a Cantor when he was young, I read somewhere that he actually comes from a family of Cantors.

Oh, bummer, I was looking forward to your reaction to “the” section. You did the PG version. The proper version tells more about what the song is about. Also it would have been more fun watching your face. Hehe
