“What is going on here musically?” This, to me, is what Jinjer is all about. They’re a band for music nerds. Tatiana’s growls get a lot of attention, and rightfully so, but the stuff that’s going on underneath is crazy. They’re each phenomenally skilled at their instrument, and they’re constantly playing with time signatures, phrase length, dissonance/resolution, genre fusion, and so on. The more you know about how music works, the more there is in every song that’s cool and different and worth noticing. It’s similar to what I love about Voiceplay (which is how I found your channel a few months ago). Also, the comments about her using the shape of the tunnel - that’s how she creates pitch. The false folds are unpitched, so they only make one sound. She changes the shape of her resonant spaces to make it come out higher or lower, almost like how a trombone works. If she needs a higher pitch, she makes things narrow, for lower pitches, she opens things up, including dropping her jaw to make more space in her mouth. If you do more Jinjer, it would be cool to try to catch how mouth shape and jaw position and such correlate to the pitch of her growl.

Exactly... My first reaction to Pisces was less about Tati, as I've heard women growling before (obviously not to the same level of skill), and more about the band and the composition.

@@mikedanger6323 Yeah, Pisces is a cool song to surprise people who aren’t expecting the growls, but the things that stick with me in that song are the 7/8 time in the verses, the cool unison guitar/bass runs in the bridge (that’s one of my favorite bass lines ever), and the belted section at the end. Also, the way they make such different feels work together and feel like a cohesive song. Everything I’ve heard by them has stuff that stands out to me like that.

What is very cool to me is how Tatiana has won so many of you guys (content creators) over. You are not the first that have said something to effect of "not knowing you needed her in your life" But over and over again she seems to hook you guys. Not exactly sure what that means (if it means anything at al) I have witnessed other harsh vocalists covered on channels however few ever get past one video. Jinjer always gets at least a second look. Love the reaction/review.

I’ve noticed that about reaction coaches too. People just LOVE the band but especially that demonic little pixie. Personally, it was the same for me. HATED growling until I stumbled upon Pisces. I’m still fairly "meh" about it. Unless, of course, it’s Tati. 😉

It seems like a lot of them end up really liking Spiritbox, too. I’d bet it has to do with both bands being seriously musically interesting even without the vocals. A lot of bands with harsh vocals are fairly straightforward metal, but Jinjer and Spiritbox are both super creative from a music theory standpoint as well. They’re the whole package and not just a crazy voice.

9:07 - In that part she's "emulating" jamaican Reggae singers. Reggae was one of her musical influences growing up, she's a big Bob Marley fan and when she joined Jinjer she had big, long dreads. 🙂 17:35 - Her relative stillness is easy to explain: the mic was in a stand and she was recording in an improvised vocal booth (basically just a black cloth hanging from somewhere in her then boyfriend's, now husband's, house in LA). One other vocal coach who reacted to this one-take mentioned that posture is very important when doing harsh vocals, blah blah blah, but don't let it fool you, when you react to Perennial Live at Wacken 2019 (I'm pretty certain you will 😉) you'll see that she can do everything she did here (and more) in all sorts of positions and still sound amazing.

Great reaction and analysis! It's awesome to see your increasing appreciation for the ways in which (safely produced) harsh vocals can be used for storytelling. One thing I think vocalists like Tatiana, Floor, and other great metal vocalists today share with musical theatre is the use of a wide variety of tone qualities and dynamics for storytelling purposes. Another musician who makes excellent use of a variety of clean and harsh vocals for storytelling that you might enjoy reacting to and analyzing could be Devin Townsend. I'd start with his performance of Kingdom for EMGtv. I'll also throw in a request for you to check out Unleash the Archers, and their beast of a lead vocalist Brittney Slayes. She's a mind blowing alto power belter with insane range and stamina. I'd start with Awakening if you're interested in checking them out.

Given how much energy she has on the stage I assume she has to hold back when the microphone is mounted. I feel like she loves running around the stage and perform. I love this song and Tatiana does a great job with the vocals (better than on the recorded version, IMO), but if you decide to listen to one more Jinjer song, I would highly recommend the song Wallflower, which has a totally different groove then this song and Tatiana’s vocals are beautiful (with only about 20% harsh vocals). A bit of backstory that I don't remember how much she talked about in that interview, she's always loved singing and had a few months of lessons as a kid but didn't get serious about it until she was 15 in roughly 2002 or so. Between then and joining Jinjer in 2010 she'd sung cleans in 7 bands (Jinjer was #8) and added growls in the last of those called Prophecy starting in about 2008. After Jinjer she also did a side project with a latin band whose name is usually romanized Kodry (if you look up "vidcerts tatiana nirvana" you'll find 22 minutes of Tati singing latin-infused Nirvana with them which is just awesome). All of that experience until 2012 when they got their first indie label was amateur and local with lots of performances at parties and local clubs so at this point she's been performing for more of her life than not. Without much formal training, she's been growing a lot during that time and the technical sophistication of especially her cleans has grown a lot over that time.

Jinjer really has carved a rather unique segment for themselves in the modern music scene. You noted a few times the time signature and they really like the changes as rhythmically it keeps you guessing as to what is next. Then Tatiana unleashes her unique style on top of that and you realize this band is one of those that you just have to listen to multiple times before you really get the way the composition flows and how you can follow it. Unique riffs (guitar AND bass) coupled with Vlad laying down just outright odd timings but keeping everything cohesive and closed out with Tatiana shocking you with 3 different (guttural, fry, and clean) vocal flavors. Jinjer doing Jinjer things. Perennial live at Whacken next please - this song closes out their set so you get to see them all a bit winded and just continue to kill it. 🤘

Hey Jen, great reaction! I’m thrilled you’re really getting into the harsh vocals :) Tati’s different mouth shapes are to create different resonance chambers to pitch her growls. And as for the time signatures… multiple crazy beats are a signatory of progressive rock and metal. Tatiana counts reggae and jazz as heavy influences. She also adores Gwen Stefani, which really shows in some of her music video outfits. You’ve gotta check out an actual live performance though! Seeing the band perform for a crowd is a whole new dimension.

The lyrics are very important to Tatiana, she wants/needs you to be able to understand them, even is the distorted voice parts, so she works very hard at it. Tatiana is a huge Gwen Stefani fan and it is not uncommon to see her wearing a Tragic Kingdom t-shirt (an album by No Doubt which is Gwen's band), and when you listen you can hear that influence. The Charismatic voice has done a video where they stuck a camera down the throat of Will Ramos, the singer for Lorna Shore, to see what goes on when he sings distorted, it is really worth watching. That said his ability with distorted voice is almost unequalled and is shocking to even people who are used to the use of distorted voice. When (if) you are ready he has several excellent One Take Performances (my recommendation is his cover of Sleep Token - Hypnosis so you can hear him sing clean before you experience the total distortion he is capable of) which are very similar to this one by Tatiana (the camera angle is probably a bit better).

They got millions of views with their Metallica covers. They have a good selection of originals and I would check them out live - Vertigo live is a great place to start. A cover of Dio's The Last in Line is amazing. For some insane vocals, try "Not Afraid". Watching them do "Enter Sandman" when they ranged from 11 to 19 years is quite amazing. Until you see it, you won't understand the shock value of the talent of the band and Melody's voice as a young teen. I don't think that comparing to theater is a misstep at all, I think of vocalists like Tatiana who can do it all as alike to voice actors for animated or video game characters who can really transform their voices. I think of the different vocal styles as different characters in a song sometimes, that was partially how I was able to learn to appreciate harsh vocals at first (by making that comparison in my head). most of the song is in 4/4 btw, the drummer rarely plays on the beats you expect

Jen, Tatiana is a rock & roll goddess. She rules, so very good. Plus she is easy on the eye. She has so many styles and a great vocal range. She owns the stage, it is hers! At 4:something she holds her headphones on, to keep them from blowing off of her head.? This song does go reggae at times... Such vocal power and projection I would so love to see them in concert. Reaching for notes, no need for her because those notes are just there. Yes she is still and calm. Epic...

You NEED to react to Tool a progressive metal band that’s known for having odd time signatures in their songs with many of their songs being longer than most songs. Tool has a huge fan base so it will definitely get you the views when you react to Tool. Tool songs are so incredible that fans often can’t pick a single favorite song from the band. Songs to start with are 46&2 (think chromosomes) The Pot, Lateralus (Fibonacci sequence based song) Schism, Sober live performance, Pneuma, The Grudge. I would avoid official videos except for Sober live and Pneuma drum cam video as the official videos for other songs can distract you from the complexity of the music. Tool is a band of true musicians and their skill is incredible and unparalleled. For Lareralus I do recommend a lyric video.

She doesn't get enough respect for her compositional skills- the lads create their often very complex, angular, brain-engaging-with-uncommon-timings-&-heavy-syncopation music (which I adore btw).... then a final demo is handed to Tatiana, who has to figure out, from scratch, melodic vocal lines which can flow over the usually very cerebral score from the boys. She invariably comes up with very *human* ,emotional, clean passages which lend balancing heart to the lads' music which is quite heady.... & obviously when things require intensity, we all know she does the extreme stuff better than anyone else. Also, the fact that she writes cleverly for the extreme passages- never trying to fit too many syllables in any measure, which allows you to make out most of what she's saying without having to immediately reach for a lyric sheet. I'd very much enjoy seeing what you make of their thru-composed song "Vortex" from the most recent album sometime, if you can handle a no verses, no choruses, kinda thang?! Go on, you know you wanna!! ;)

Good analysis. I watched her interview on The Charismatic Voice also. Tetiana seems to be more of a fan of pop music, and Reggae. It’s the other band members who seem to be into the metal core scene with the time signatures and progressive nature of their music. She seems a little bit frustrated with the proggy nature of their music, but that’s why I like it!

Again, one of the best reaction/analysis versions of this song. Also, a master class in video editing, other channels should take notes, no ummms, no ahhhhhs, no dead air, just what we want & need to hear. If you watch enough of Jinjer's interviews, you learn that the music is written separately by the musicians in the band, & then is handed off to Tatiana, who interprets the music & writes the lyrics in her 3rd language of English, behind Russian & Ukrainian?!? The Band was forced to flee their home town in the Donbas Region of the Ukraine, when the Russians invaded that area & the Crimea, before the more current invasion. This inspired the song Home Back. kzread.info/dash/bejne/YqiTq8GgmNC-ebQ.html Like many of their official music videos, which boarder on musical theatre, this one is a particularly poignant, in light of the current #UkraineConflict. I recommend downloading the lyrics ahead of time. I still can't get through watching this video without crying. Tatiana also shows yet another somewhat surprisingly sweet & jazzy side of her vocal repertoire.

Home Back is incredibly powerful and even before the invasion I felt it was perhaps their most important song, as we don't often get to see art by ordinary people caught in a war. Usually if we get an authentic work from those who were there it is soldiers' stories which are important in theor own way but the reality of every war's devastating impact on the ordinary citizens caught in it often gets missed.

Yes the situation in Donbas is a tragedy the world let fester for eight years. The Minsk Accords should have been the end of it. As late as March of this year it was possible to get to that state. No more. Now it's like India where a 22-25% minority will be carving off because of irreconcilable conflict. Didn't have to happen. But it did. I just hope the ceasefire is soon.

Actually, this is a rare Jinjer track which is completely in 4 time, it's just that the syncopation within the 4/4 structure is all over the shop. Great reaction, but can you try to get rid of those micro-glitches in the audio playback of the video.
