You need to also remember that you're looking at a relatively new band in this video. You can hear that David's voice is much younger and less mature than the one you heard in "Sound of Silence". Sixteen years of touring does a lot to a lead singer's vocal cords... some good, some bad, depending on how they use them. In David's case, I think he sounds better today than he did 20 years ago. This tells me he hasn't abused his voice, as much as strengthened it.

I was lucky enough to catch Disturbed in a small venue in Nashville very early in their career and...David was an an absolute force on stage. Everything you highlight for his voice, is so much more impactful live because of stage presence. Honestly as a an amateur vocalist, David's work inspires the hell out of me.

Shame that official MV has a certain part cut out of it. Also it's worth mentioning that between Down with the Sickness and Sound of Silence there is at least half of a decade gap in vocal improvement. Another thing worth mentioning is that David got some kind of vocal cords surgery in the mean time.

Another great analysis with the added bonus of your best visual reaction since "Aqualung" or "Hurt". looked like you and David had a moment in the beginning with the whispered "You feel that" like the visual reaction "My empire of dirt" with Johnny Cash. You can see the emotional connection you're having with the music which is the thing that I thik sets your reactions, Chase's, Elizabeth's etc apart from the vast majority of reactors. Down With the Sickness is probably the most well-known Disturbed song, and the "oh-wah-ah-ah-ah" in it is certainly the most iconic of David's "noises", but there are other songs where he makes different noises, and does them more often. Asylum and This Moment come to mind immediately, followed by Stricken, The Game and Haunted. Other songs I would recommend would be Pain Redefined (more for the unusual progression and cadence on the verses than anything else) and Overburdened (for more of his "sweet" tone - I would agree that that's a good adjective for it).

When I hear this song, I have thoughts about one thing. When I was an indy wrestling referee, I met a guy who went by the named “Hardcore Kid” during a show in Jesup, Georgia. I had his match against Adam Lyger, who was a friend of his. They had an incredible match that went about 8 minutes. After the match, I ran to the back and thanked both of them for the match. I did another match they did with Darin Lynch, another person I was close with who threw out the idea of me being a “heel referee.” Five years later, I’m working for a group down here in Charleston , SC and he’s on the card but now known as “Josh Magnum.” For his entrance he used “Down With The Sickness.” A few years later, I get on a “Hall of Fame” show being held by a group in Orangeburg, SC as part of the group in Charleston. I get to the show with a friend who was working as a manager on the show. I get to the show and find out that it’s a tag team match with Josh in it and I had the match. Now, the group that was hosting the show was a group that Josh was HUGELY over with the company’s fanbase. Plus, Josh hadn’t worked for them in a couple of years and they didn’t know he was going to be there. Once I realized that, my brain went full throttle into an idea to get as big of a reaction as possible. I’m in the ring with the ring announcer and he introduces the match. The first ones out were the heels with the manager who rode up with me. They get in the ring and taunt the fans. Then, the ring announcer introduces the 1st half of them who comes out to “Billie Jean” by Michael Jackson. He comes down the aisleway and walks around ringside while high-fiving fans. He gets back to the aisleway and stops. After a very brief pause, the lights go out and his entrance video comes on as that opening drumbeat starts. I knew the reaction would be good but I wasn’t prepared for this. The crowd, which was maybe 300 people, went crazy. I couldn’t hear myself think. I could barely hear the music which was blaring in the National Guard Armory where this was. I was doing everything I could to not react myself. It’s one of my favorite moments as a referee. So, whenever I hear that song, that’s the first thing I think of. Also, earlier in the back, I was talking with Josh about the reaction he would get when he came out. In his deep voice with a strong Southern drawl, he looks at me and says,”Brother, I don’t think they’re going to remember me.” I think this may have played a role in why I enjoy reaction videos.

2:44 Exactly. I was listening to Disturbed for years before they did "The Sound of Silence." Their established style of music makes their rendition of that song even more mindblowing because of what a departure it was. And yet, it was so expertly executed. And it wasn't their first cover on one of their albums. They did a cover of Shout by Tears for Fears on their album The Sickness. They did Land of Confusion by Genesis on their album Ten Thousand Fists. It wasn't until their album Immortalized in 2015 that they did their cover of The Sound of Silence. And now it has become one of their most well-known songs.

The use of his vocals as a strong part of the rhythm and not just the melody is what first got me into Disturbed. Namely, the first song I heard of theirs was Liberate, and the way his vocals blend melody and rhythm so completely in that song's verses in particularly really got me. I'm not saying no others are doing similar things, but he just does it so well. There's a clean-ness to it that I've rarely heard elsewhere.

Great reaction Julia, I listened to this so much when it came out, though these days I think I actually prefer the cover by Ai and Violet.

Love this song but the music video version cuts a big chunk out of the middle, so I'd recommend you see the live version as well

Holy crap Julia, right at the end of this video you made sounds that heavily reminded me of "clickers" from the video game The Last of Us. Very cool,👍

His family were the ones who sing for ceremony in synagogue. His grand father & father, and they have some unique songs and sounds. I think that helped him develop his range and two sounds almost, at once.

I had heard about this song from friends who referred to it as the “monkey” song. The first time I actually listened to it I picked up on the reason not only due the intro but the chorus to me initially sounded like “knock your monkey down with the sickness”. I later read the lyrics and now I can pick out the correct phrasing of the chorus. The censored part of the song has been wildly interpreted by fans over the years. David has explained the band’s sentiment of the meaning in interviews but they leave it up to the fans to assign their own interpretation. They often address social issues in their songs that may be controversial.

I got to hear this the first time it was ever played out in public- yes before they were signed- at bar on their very first gig. I've seen them at least 20 times- 15 of them in bars when they were first starting out. SOUTHSIDE for life.

Awwww, you listened to the short version of the song. I wish they'd take that version off of KZread. David has a great voice and I love singers like him and Tatiana Shmailyuk, Mike Patton, Ronnie Redke and Courtney LePlante who can do so much with their voices.

Did Julia like the song? Seeing the beginnings of some head banging there. Disturb will bring out everyone's stank-face at some point. Excellent reaction as always!

2000s era metal making the rounds again in 2023. Some good sh*t…from the nostalgic Nu Metal era to the brilliant underground. A better period than originally thought. Glad it’s getting the spotlight back on it. 🤘🏽

I'm glad you watched the full version too. A shame that it wasn't in the video, but at least you've heard it, cause I always thought it a shame that most reactors just watch the official "clean" version w/o the "mommy" verse.
