    derBackfisch123 I can't speak for AMD but Nvidia support of DisplayPort is shitty to non-existent. I have to use it because my 4K monitor predates HDMI 2.0 but the majority of times my GPU fails to transmit a signal via it after the BIOS screen, my motherboard beeps and gives a GPU error code. About 1 in 5 times I can boot first time without having to reset immediately. The only workaround I've found is to connect both HDMI and DP, set it to extend displays, then turn off the HDMI "monitor". Now every time I boot it uses HDMI until it gets into Windows, then extends, then switches input. It does mean having two cables between my GPU and monitor after all, and it's not an elegant solution at all, but until this infant technology is actually supported this is the kind of shit we just have to live with. Edit: this is on a GTX 970, by the way, so not exactly ancient tech. These issues are current as of October 2014.

    Thank you for clearing up a lot of questions for us. We are a digital signage company and at present have 14 locations in operation. We are now getting inquirers about multi screens at some of our location. Great job explaining DisplayPort connections. We are presently working on a 2x2 video wall for a up coming show here in our area.

    Some things you forgot to mention: 1. HDMI also supports Ethernet and control signals (CEC). 2. DVI-D actually supports audio, but it is not in the standard. 3. What about HDBaseT as a display port? Why is it not used on computer cards yet? The cable used in HDBaseT is much simpler since it is a standard RJ45 connector and uses standard Cat5/6 patch cables. Not to mention you can have cables up to 100m with HDBaseT (in some cases 300m). Supports 8k resolutions, supports power over cable (PoC), supports digital audio, supports ethernet and carries two way control signals like RS232 and IR, all trough the same cable...

    + NCIX Tech Tips Hey I had a question about active display port to HDMI adapters. I'm looking at getting thunderbolt dock for my laptop, but I need to have the dock output to HDMI. I've heard that you need to use an Active Display Port to HDMI adapter in order for this to work. Are there any caveats to using this dongle? The HDMI cable will be fed into a stereo for audio and video.

    You mean Composite Video. That sucker does only 480i (NTSC) or 576i (PAL). Component Video ("Red"/Blue/Green) can easily do 1080p and higher. For Analogue Video outputs on a computer it is comparable to VGA (which goes up to 2048x1536 @ 85Hz), whilst its Digital Video compatriot on computers is DVI (yes, there ARE DVI Composite Video converter cables out there).

  • @Candisa

    @Candisa

    They are actually still very widespread as f.e. CNC machines, vending machines... still use them as their main (often only) connection for programming. Lots of consumer equipment also have some sort of serial connector (be it the typical 9-pin or something proprietary) for diagnosis and firmware upgrades by technicians. That's why you'll still find ancient computers (sometimes as old as 386's running DOS or Win3.1!) in professional environments and many technicians carry very bulky laptops with all kinds of connections.

    DisplayPort doesn't run in fps like HDMI but rather in maximum bandwidth transferring data in packets. If the connector is short or has a repeater for longer range then the bandwidth will be high like Ethernet and allow theoretically any fps/hrz on a monitor to be set. (as long as the monitor supports it) (longer cables pick up more EMI thus lower the bandwidth without repeaters) As i'm typing I am using DisplayPort to drive my ASUS VG248QE at 1920x1080@144hz

  • @CelmorSmith

    @CelmorSmith

    You need to differentiate between FPS and Refresh rate, your monitors probably support only up to 60 Hz so that's what determines the needed bandwith. The requirements of bandwidth and the supported bandwidth of each DP version can be seen hear, you can calculate the needed bandwidth for every resolution and refresh rate yourself with a formula: width * height * refresh_rate * bits_per_pixel * 1.1 Example: 1920 * 1080 * 60 * 24 * 1.1 ~= 3.3 Gb/s DisplayPort 1.0 allows a maximum of 8.64 Gbit/s... If you want to daisy chain all 3 monitors (if the monitors support daisy chain) displayport 1.2 is enough for 4 * 1080p monitors 60Hz Source: forum.videohelp.com/threads/363933-Displayport-supportet-resolutions-refresh-rates www.displayport.org/cables/driving-multiple-displays-from-a-single-displayport-output/ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Technical_specifications

    rubikfan1 not in the general sense of video. A lot of mobile devices support it, but almost no display devices use MHL ( monitors, tvs, av recievers). the 8k @ 120fps is only possible if it is using pure mhl on both ends, which is pratically not supported. The moment you adapt mhl to another connector, you are limited to that connector's bandwidth.

I have a 21 inch Dell LCD monitor with DVI, VGA, S-Video, and Composite inputs and a second HP 21 inch monitor with VGA, DVI, and Displayport inputs. My main stream is DVI to 1 monitor and the other HDMI to DVI conversion. I still use VGA as alternate port on one monitor with my MSI Netbook PC with VGA output running Win 7 when at home using the front panel switch to select. Hey, its been around the world litteraly 3 times in a previous career and still going strong. Now I have a second CPU with HDMI, Mini Displayport, and USB-C displayport outputs. Well I'm still trying to figure out what I'm going to do with 7 outputs and only 2 monitors. ;-)

    Display connectors explained the short version: 1. VGA= DEAD...stop using it and at least come to the 21 first century to DVI. 2. Dvi and dual link Dvi= STILL has some useful life in it for decent enough chunk of years to come. 3. Hdmi=has a BRIGHT future ahead on a variety of reasons already explained in this video 4. Displayport= so far the KING of the mountain in terms of what it can support and options. It's simple. If possible get displayport. If not get Hdmi 2.0, If not, get dual link dvi. If not, get hdmi regular ( aka 1.4 today's standard..found ....EVERYWHERE), If that is not available, then for the LOVE OF GOD. get dvi or dual link dvi but stay the fuck away from vga!

Am I not getting the TV's full potential? I'm working on a new computer now, with a Asus Z170-A motherboard, which just says 1xHDMI port. Is 2.0 the norm now? How do I know if I have 2.0 on my laptop? Will my new motherboard have it? Thanks for all this help
