When u stop and think about it tho, you can logically understand why Asian immigrant parents are so in your face. 1) Chinese culture puts their entire future of ur parents on their kid’s back. They are financially responsible for their parents once a certain age hits. 2) On top of that, they’re raising this kid in a strange land that hates them and their children. Many Asian parents are just toxic. But many more, like Ming, are just living in a feardriven mindset. They don’t wanna control their kid for the sake of control, but because they are legitimately scared for their child to leave and get hurt, bringing everyone else down with them.

Kind of interesting, a therapist on KZread said that Mei's mother having issues with her own mother, people often say they'll do better than their parents implying they'll do things differently, but subconsciously, they fail to realize they end up acting exactly like their parents. It reminds me of what Tarrlok said to Avatar Korra; "I thought I was better than my father, but his ghost still shaped me. I became a soldier of revenge, just like he wanted me to be. And so did my brother."

2:47 The reason the food looks SO FRIGGIN' GOOD in this movie is because the director, Domee Shi, also directed Pixar's short film "Bao" about the little dumpling boy. They did a TON of research and work to make the food look as realistic as they could, without making it look gross... which is really hard to do with ground meat! And yet, they did it! If you haven't seen "Bao," I highly recommend it simply for its animation!

it's true that the mom was so overbearing and generational trauma doesn't excuse it but as kids we internalize things so differently. at least mei have friends that show her that her mom can be too much sometimes. and this is why we should do a lot of healing first before bringing children into the world because trauma can be a very subconscious thing and we pass it on to our children without realizing it

I get that the bully is jealous of Mei and that's why hes such a douche, but he had that °confrontation ° coming. Can't be picking fights and can't °handle the consequences. Plus his self Esteem is obviously low and hes taking that out on Mei the 'perfect' girl°. Especially with how no one would've wanted to come if Mei wasn't there. I get that kids would eventually bond over something so small as a boy band, but it doesn't erase everything he did ° and it may never if he doesn't change. If he truly changed then it wouldn't matter much at all anymore. I think that could've been a better point for them to make for kids° °The violence and intimidation was a no go, we don't love that, but the standing up for your family and calling out your bully in the moment, we love.° Edit: don't take this comment too seriously. It's not full of malice against a child FYI in case some people actually think that. Its not that serious. Edit 2: edited again to make my point a bit more clear. I hope it comes across better what I was trying to say.

    1) Sure, the bible tells children to honor their parents. But a lot of people also leave out that parents shouldn't drive their children to anger and bitterness. So... 2) Honestly, I think labels help in some ways. Like, yeah, sometimes labels keep you in a box, but not all labels keep you in a box. 3) Girl, the nightmare sequence kinda freaked me out the first time I saw it. After that I shrugged it off because I've literally had worse nightmares. 4) Literally had an argument with an acquaintance about why the mom was how she was. Not all parents recognize that they were abused/manipulates by their own parents, and even if they do they don't always catch themselves doing the same things to their children. It's the whole point of generational trauma that I think sometimes gets glossed over by the older generations. I dealt with it myself, and I think if I were to sit with my mom like I did during "Encanto", my mom probably wouldn't catch on the same way in "Turning Red".

I'm an old black guy about to turn 70, but I think this movie is great fun. Something I want to argue about, though, is that the Red Panda isn't a girl getting her period. Mei doesn't even get her period in the movie...that was just to show us how over-the-top her mother was. It's not really about puberty, either, at least not completely. Notice that all the old women, including the grandmother, still had their pandas, so that rules out both periods and puberty. Remember too that the Red Panda was a gift so that they could protect themselves while their men were away. In China, the color red represents good luck, power, happiness, and strength. None of that is menstruation. The Red Panda represents a woman's natural strength and assertiveness, which women in general and Asian women in particular are taught to repress. Maybe it was the custom in old China for a woman to keep her strength and assertiveness repressed, but in Canada in 2002, Mei's assertiveness is acceptable and even celebrated. And kudos to Jin, Mei's father, who was glad to marry Ming even knowing about her Red Panda.

Btw, yes it actually is in part about getting her period. The jokes weren't coincidental.. Gross red monster. The way she's walking stiffly when she's in her bedroom? I can confirm that's how we walk when we're trying not to move too much to prevent...an "accident". "Prevent any accidents." Curling up in the fetal position because it hurts. You can even make a case for the extreme emotions thing, cause a lot of us can attest that extreme emotions tend to make it...worse, let's say. And the friends neutralizing the panda? A way to show that having friends around to help you through it when you have an "accident" can make it less embarrassing.

Imo we should be learning about periods earlier than 9! At least the basics. It's not shameful or embarrassing, it's natural. It's also a part of puberty - 100% of people go through puberty and 50% of people get periods, so we should know that it's gonna happen to ourselves or our family members eventually. I think it helps young kids not be so scared of it. Some girls start puberty around 9 anyway, so they may as well start learning 😅

Because as a kid blood = pain. I didn’t care if people said it was normal, I didn’t want it. Plus your period comes around the same age as when your Mum had her first. My mum didn’t until she was 12 and a half and for me it wasn’t until a few days after my 13th birthday. If you want to argue your mother method, she would transform into tiger and shout you out loud with her roar and even would slap you with her tiger paws if you still not obeying her orders.. Tiger mothers think they always right because they had more experience than you and she saw more things even before you born.. So how dare you arguing your mother method if you know you were wrong? So, yeah, it's sucks and the cycle would be repeated over and over again through generation if no one brave and smart enough to proof that parenting method was wrong..

"...the mom should leave hers behind, she is too huge..." Entirely agreed. Imagine if she accidentally transformed inside and office building or similar. Everyone in the room with her is dead, it's possible _she's_ dead, and if the transformation is powerful enough she'll collapse the entire building killing all of them, too. As for the others giving theirs up... everyone makes choices. The panda seems to be messy and sometimes problematic, as large emotions can be if you haven't learned to deal with them. For Meilin, this is less of a problem because she's a kid and still has time to make big mistakes and recover. As an adult, the margins of error are a _lot_ smaller. If you get mad and hit someone as a child, you'll probably get grounded, suspended, etc. Do the _same thing_ as an adult... and the possibilities include _prison._ This is something they would have had to have learned while they were teens, it's not something to mess around with as an adult.

What this movie does really well is show how sometimes, when parents are like that , the child has to become the adult. Look at 13 year old mei mei holding her mothers hand and helping her like an adult whereas it should be the other way around. Trauma causes bad parenting, that's why its important to heal.

4 town was based off of many iconic kpop groups, as they have massive influence also they have some backstreet boy influences as they took over in the americas and europe in the early 2000s! so it’s pretty cool this film was set in 2002! also some other big names of the group is josh levi, and finneas!

About labels : I'm agree with Meimei. Embrace all labels. Don't waste your time and effort to deny it. Have peace with it, because maybe they're right or wrong to a some degree. Take it as a somekind of criticism, and don't forget to be a good person. For the context : Meimei and her family is an immigrant. Being labelled as something is almost unavoidable.

Disney's "4 * Town" boy band looks a bit like the "Boyz 4 Now" band of "Bob's Burgers." (And "Tina Belcher" is a cooler 13-year-old character.;) Also, "Linda Belcher" handles the ups and downs of family life much better. By the way, I found your reaction/commentary on "Turning Red" MUCH better than other KZread reactors. (I found other reactor's videos as unwatchable as the first appearance of "Vanellope van Schweets" in "Wreck-It Ralph.") A "needy" Giant Red Panda? Looks a tad like "Wreck-It Ralph: Ralph Breaks The Internet." Not my kind of movie, but she "looks like a Disney Princess."
