My favourite part about peeta lying about katniss being pregnant, is that he was so convincing, even KATNISS was second guessing herself (in the inner monologue of the book)

I think the reason why Haymitch and Katniss protect Peeta isn't because they see him as weak or unable to win but because they feel like he is the only "good" person out of all of them. Haymitch and Katniss both see themselves as killers/they'll do anything to survive and they don't want Peeta to have to be like that.

  • @tmm4195

Yeah, they both put Peeta on this pedestal. Plus the movies don’t show this properly at all, but Peeta did a lot to help katniss in the first games and saved her life multiple times by his actions and he was focusing on helping her survive (which is why it annoys me when people call him weak and useless and the movies don’t help) and because if this, Haymitch also chooses to focus on katniss on the last games, which is why he doesn’t send Peeta any sponsors even though he has them and only would focus on katniss, because all three of them were working so that she would survive. This time katniss is determined that for these games they’ll chose to save and focus on Peeta instead, since they owe him that. Peeta bless him, uses the fact that Haymitch owes him for choosing katniss as a reason to choose katniss again

I just thought of it as evidence of Katniss loving Peetah (before she even realises it). This whole movie is about viewers realising she likes him even if she doesn't know it. It fits right in. Never thought it had anything to do with being *able* to compete or not because otherwise, why would Peetah try to keep her from going back in the games? haha

@gabbystorm3992 Actually, it was supposed to have been cleared away before Katniss was called in, since the tributes aren't supposed to know what each other did for their special skill, and in the book, she has to wait a really long time for them to clean up the room. They weren't able to, though, and ended up putting a tarp over it. She never saw what Peeta did. But in the movie, it's left uncovered and you can see Plutarch smirking after she hangs the effigy of Seneca Crane. So in the movie, it's implied that Plutarch decided to leave it uncovered to piss off Katniss.

The “rebels” we’re able to rescue Katniss from the arena before the Capitol could but they weren’t able to get Peeta. OK so basically, President Snow b0mbed district 12 because Katniss destroyed the arena and that’s an act of defiance. So district 12 is gone and half it’s population is dead. @@jennyr96 here’s a rundown!! basically, rebellion has already been picking up in the districts after katniss and peeta outsmarted the capitol in order to win the last games together, so snow decides to reap only victors for the quarter quell in order to re-establish capitol power and also kill at least katniss in the process. without katniss knowing, haymitch, plutarch, and a lot of the other tributes are all planning a rebellion against the capitol to begin during the games. johanna is in on it, as are wiress and beetee, and because katniss wanted w+b as allies johanna made sure to protect them long enough to unite with katniss, which is why she said that she got them out (of the bloodbath at the beginning of the games) for katniss. the rebellion starts during the games, and when they destroy the arena katniss, beetee, and finnick are all close enough to each other to be rescued by haymitch and plutarch, but because peeta and johanna were in a different area the capitol was able to capture them first. as retaliation for katniss being the symbol of the rebellion, snow bombs district 12 and basically destroys the whole place. any survivors are now in district 13, which was said to be destroyed by the capitol but has an underground system which is what the rebellion is now based out of! i like to explain lore i hope that made sense lol

In the book Gale was never an option. Peeta had rooted in her heart when they were 11 years old with the bread and starting with the reaping those roots started growing exponentially. Katniss didn’t understand the feelings because she was too focused on survival for her family. Throughout the books she is obsessed with Peeta’s stead strong arms and there is an entire paragraph on his eyelashes as she watched him. She never paid that much attention to Gale he was clearly friend zoned. Ultimately she considered rebellion for Gale but she committed to rebellion for Peeta. Peeta was her heart and her hope. The movies kinda did Peeta dirty. Katniss was the spark but Peeta was the air that caused it catch fire. If it were not for Peeta she would not have survived the 74th, 75th or 76th Hunger Games. Even when hijacked arena Peeta took over a one point and was getting her through the tunnel.

Peeta did lose his leg in the book, but thats not why katniss wants haymitch to save peeta over herself. Katniss does actually love and care about peeta, whether she knows if its platonic or romantic at this point in the story. She also knows peeta is good with people and with words and would be a great spokesperson in a rebellion setting. She also talks a lot in the books about how kind he is and how he's so much better than the rest of them. The books definitely explain a lot more than the movies. All of this is why she wants peeta to live over herself, not necessarily because hes "weak" or needs to be saved all the time. Loved the reaction. ❤

32:30 Most people from the Districts can't swim. Katniss learned because she used to go to forest with her father where was the lake (as it is forbidden to go to forest, she jokingly tells Finnick that "they have a big bath"). Mags and he were the only known swimmers. Katniss even notes that District 4 got very lucky. As we later find that Plutarch wanted her to survive, we can assume that he decided on the water so Katniss would have an advantage to go for the weapons and make it in time. It is likely that he also convinced Haymitch to force her to team up with Finnick because he would also be the one who will likely get a weapon. We know that half of the victors were tasked to help her survive, but they needed to not make it obvious. Finnick is young, fantastic at hand-to-hand combat, unlike Katniss who fights at the long distance. You can't really pick a better ally for Katniss. Johanna would be a good option too, but they likely figured out that Katniss would never accept her as an ally early on. Other victors are just not as good. And side note, Peeta is much more useful ally than Haymitch. Yes, Haymitch was fantastic, but he is much older and long-term alcoholic. Peeta is quite slept upon. He is young, vital, strong, and while he is no Finnick or Johanna, he is not bad at combat. Yes, he lost his leg in the book, but He has very good replacement and can walk and run just fine. He is also pretty resourceful. Katniss is persistent on Haymitch helping him simply because Haymitch chose to primarly help her last time and she knows how vital sponsors are in the games. She also knows that Peeta will not activally hunt others down and that he will always choose peaceful route first. That is why she insists on keeping him alive.

Iirc, the quarter quell "special rules" were all written by the founders and only read during the quarter quells. No one is allowed to read them beforehand. So, to the public, the quarter quell surprise wasn't tainted with Snow's current agenda. But it was obvious to the people who were a part of the rebellion that the quarter quell rules were tampered with. Also, Haymitch was a quarter quell tribute and during that year, there were double the amount of tributes which makes his win even more impressive.

Its really interesting that you pointed out how different it'd be if the hunger games were just opponent vs opponent, with less interference because thats how thr first hunger games actually were. Even the capital didn't really enjoy watching the games and Snow is responsible for letting people bet on victors and make it more "entertaining" so that the capital would be invested and want the games ro continue, because before it was pretty brutal with the victors being in a basic arena just killing each other. Mags (the old lady) was the first victor to have a "victory tour" which i believe her games was the 11th.

I think the first movie did an awful justice to Peeta’s character and just how much he helped katniss and saved her life multiple times, even if katniss didn’t fully realise that at the time until later. I think the movie doesn’t help that he seems to be seen as useless when he isn’t, plus the fact that in the book he didn’t struggle with training and even excelled at hand to hand combat and is good with a knife, when the movie had him struggle and have katniss tell him to show off his strength. Even in the catching fire book, Peeta helps get them all into shape by going into personal trainer mode after hearing about the quarter quell

Katniss and Gale were never boyfriend and girlfriend. The movies played up their relationship more than the books in my opinion. They only kiss like once or twice in the books. But even in the movies they aren’t in a relationship. They are friends, hunting partners, he helps her with her family, and yes she may have underlying feelings, but Katniss’ focus isn’t on finding love, it’s on survival. The whole point is that she has feelings for both guys, but because her situation is dire it doesn’t really matter, she doesn’t spend her time trying to figure out who she likes more. The triangle is not at the forefront of Katniss’ mind, Gale and Peeta are more focused on it than Katniss. As for why she says what she says to Hammich. She wants Peeta to survive because she believes he is the best of them. He is a genuinely good person. It’s not because he’s weak it’s because in the 1st games Hammich sent all the help to Katniss and she wanted him to focus on getting sponsors for Peeta.

It’s funny that you guys mention that Haymitch and Katniss promising to protect Peeta makes it come across as them pitying him (they don’t lol, Katniss just thinks he’s a better person than her and is already kinda in love with him at this point and Haymitch feels guilty for choosing to focus on Katniss in the last games), because Peeta actually confronts them for keeping secrets from him to protect him in this book. When they visit District 11 (Rue’s District) and Katniss reveals that Snow visited her, Peeta literally tells them that he doesn’t need them to baby him and that they all have to be a team. Literally sits them down and makes them agree to be honest from now on lol. Of course, when the Quarter Quell arrives, that’s out the window for everyone. Haymitch makes deals with both Katniss and Peeta to keep the other safe (and keeps the rebellion’s plan to himself). Peeta goes all commanding officer and becomes really strict and distant and makes himself, Haymitch, and Katniss start training for the games like careers to ensure all their survival (just in case he can’t volunteer as tribute when the Quell reaping happens). Then, Katniss becomes all mopey because instead of getting hugs and kisses from Peeta (Katniss and Peeta are a lot more affectionate in the books, even when they’re not on camera), she instead is being made to do push ups and watch old games to study old arenas and other victors’ strategies. (And I am not kidding about the last part lol. Katniss gets so mad that she’s made to exercise and watch games footage while Peeta basically keeps his distance until they’re on the train to the Quell and then he finally shows her some affection and she latches onto him. One of the quotes from the moment is literally, “I wrap my arms tightly around his neck before he can order me to do push-ups or something.”) Love my girl Katniss in the books. She is so down bad and so hilarious. Gotta love her for keeping it real.

To make sense of killing kids and broadcasting it, you have to imagine growing up during the Vietnam draft when college-age kids were being selected by a lottery to go off to fight, kill, and die -- their deaths then honored as glorious sacrifices. To Benji's point, it did lead to a lot of protests, some that resulted in protester casualties at the hands of law enforcement and national guard, most famously the massacre at Kent State. Hope that helps make sense of an otherwise confounding premise.

She says she can hear them. And both would’ve been great rep!

It is universally acknowledged that Catching Fire is the best film. Peeta not loosing a leg in the first movie stupidly lessens the stakes in the series. Each District champion having similar skill sets does make sense. The primary practice in District 3 is tech manufacturing, so it would make sense that both victors would have won by tech means. Districts 1 and 2 have secret training programs, so winning via fighting prowess makes sense. And so on.

Just to clear this up because I watch a lot of these reactions and people always talk about Gale as if he is Katniss's boyfriend but they are just essentially really close friends (at least in Katniss's eye) with some attraction there. I do think Katniss does have some feelings for gale but it's almost just like a familiarity thing, he's always been there for her so she just kinda assumes she should like him because he makes her feel safe and if not him then who else? Also I don't believe that Katniss having feeling for Peeta is just an act, I think yes it starts off as that because it can help both of them survive but I think by the end of the 1st games she actually does like Peeta but she wants to get home and just forget about it all. Peeta is so closely intertwined with her trauma from the hunger games that she pushes him away because being with him would make her think of the arena and all the loss that happened for them to live. That's why when this movie starts they are so disconnected from each other. Katniss does genuinely love Peeta she just isn't fully aware of it until their lives are at risk again. I don't think for a while Katniss even knows who she cares about more because she is just trying to survive.

26:20 it's not that they're paired up into couples because they won back to back or similarly so much as it's that they have similar talents because each of them was in the games at some point and had to learn all of the skills that they're teaching, plus each district is known for certain things. like district two is a military state that specializes in weaponry, district 3 specializes in technology which is why beatee and wiress are so intellectually similar because they work as engineers on top of being victors, district four is fishing which is why mags makes hooks and finnick does water combat, district seven is lumber so johanna and blight fight with axes, etc. and they're all so close emotionally because after you win, you move to the victor's village where all of the winners stay together, so being that close to other people that experienced the same trauma as you would make you seek those people out and form close relationships, which is why they all act the same way as peeta and katniss do.

So… who’s ready for The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes?? Also, the reason Katniss is the only female victor in the reaping is bc Lucy Gray (the female protagonist of The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes) “disappeared” mysteriously. Also, President Snow was between 16-18 in The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes, which takes place in the 10th games. If Catching Fire takes place during the 75th Hunger Games, that mf is supposed to be ANCIENT.

Mags and Snow are close to the same age. Snow being slightly older than Mags. It makes Tigis ancient too.

I just realized something...... If Haymitch went with Katniss to the games instead of Peeta.... then Peeta would have been killed with the rest of District 12 at the end of the movie... (or maybe Gale would have got him out with her mom & sister...idk lol)

I was always annoyed that they didn’t include the scene of Plutarch wearing a mockingjay watch, I think Katniss sees it while they’re dancing? and gets the idea that he might be on her side, and not on the capitol’s- although she’s not aware there are sides here yet

The salute means a lot more in the book bc it’s a funeral tradition in 12 to say goodbye to the dead. In the first games they say goodbye to katniss instead of the polite applause they’re supposed to do when a name is drawn which is the greatest act of rebellion a district as beaten down as 12 can afford at the time.

The victory tour is exactly half a year from the games so it’s perfectly timed to remind the districts that they’re supposed to hate each other. It’s like so perfectly planned in the most evil way.

Philip Seymour Hoffman died sometime when filming Mockingjay part 2 they hadn't finished all his scenes so they had to diverged a little bit more from the book to get what they needed from his character after he passed away basically I believe it was some s*** he said to katniss in person that they had written as a letter that Haymitch then read to her he died during the filming of Mockingjay part 2

Remember that leg wound that Peeta had when she found him in the first movie he had to have that leg amputated that's why he was the way he was in the arena in this game

@@PinkPopcast the amputation was just in the books but they didn't take out the part where he was slowing everyone down it just didn't make any sense because you know when he's missing a limb it would take him longer to get around they just made a super slow for no reason I did not care for that

They way you guys totally missed Peeta’s character entirely. He was never useless, he saves Katniss almost as much as she saves him. That’s the point, they care about each other so they keep each other alive. Katniss wanted him to survive because she thinks he’s the only decent person out of her and Haymitch, and she has suppressed her feelings about him through the whole trilogy
