It’s important to note that Peeta never said that there was “no one else he loves” rather he explains that he loves his family but they don’t need him like katniss’ family needs her to survive

Yeah, plus Peeta’s relationship with his family is complicated. Of course he loved them but they aren’t the best, his mother being abusive and the fact he’s left in his own in the victors village house after being traumatised, whereas katniss’ family moved in with her. He definitely knows his family doesn’t need him

@@clover2739I think that also makes this experience sorta genuine for Peeta even tho he was made to go through something quite traumatic(the hunger games) he did find someone who truly loved him in Katniss and a new family in Effie and Haymitch they all truly looked out for each other and I'm sure that meant something to Peeta.

  • @joshuacoldwater

His actions do speak differently though, he did not need to volunteer. If he truly loved his family, he could’ve let haymitch enter the game. Instead, he loves Katniss to the point of not only protecting her in the games, but abandoning the feelings for his family by entering at all. It was very clear that they thought only one of them was coming out, and even more clear that Peeta was set on that person being Katniss.

  • @clover2739

@@joshuacoldwater the thing is though, he does love his family but they aren’t great to him. So him volunteering doesn’t mean he doesn’t, because he’s being serious when he says no one needs him. He doesn’t think his family would be affected by him dying. It’s not really actions speaking louder than words at this point, because both can exist since he loves his family, but they don’t treat him the same way so he thinks it really doesn’t matter. Unlike with Katniss, who’s family actually loves and needs her. Like his mother is abusive, and despite his dad being nice he is quite passive and doesn’t do anything to stop it. Peeta even said his family would rather a girl. His mother even told him that she thinks Katniss would win, instead of giving him any kind of comfort. His two older brothers didn’t volunteer to save the youngest. I don’t blame them, but Katniss is different. Not only that, even when Peeta won the first games he was completely by himself. His family couldn’t even be bothered moving to live with him to give him any support for their son who is traumatised and survived death. He lived by himself, whereas Katniss had her mother and sister with her. Peeta does love Katniss, but it’s not also a lack of love for his family. He just thinks he has no use of being alive in comparison. Katniss couldn’t volunteer here because she’s the only girl anyway, but she wants Peeta to be saved over herself. Like she’s determined for peeta to be alive and for her to be dead, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t love her family as much as peeta, especially with prim, that’s just how it is because she thinks it would be better

Gale has his own story, that obviously isn't a focus of this story. He isn't without empathy, he is split between his complicated feelings for Katniss and a deep desire to rebel. It's highly logical how he behaves. He was living his normal life while Katniss was in the games. All he experienced was further hatred of the way things were. Katniss experienced something much more destructive, and got true PTSD. It's a well-crafted love-triangle, as much as I normally hate the idea of the concept.

Yeah in the movies he just had a leg injury that apparently caused chronic pain or something but keep in mind these movies are set far in the future. How far? We don't know at least 100 years. Probably 2 or 300 but when it comes down to the last survivor of the hunger games they need their victor so however close. They are to death. They will fix them up so they can exploit them. Keep in mind during hemuch's games he won by dodging an ax that was thrown at his head by a girl which hit the barrier and bounced back killing her. He was holding his guts while running from her and one of her eyes had popped out sometimes things get very very gory in the games. Honestly, I would very much like to know what kind of setup they had in each of the previous games but not necessarily what happened to everyone. But I'd like to know like what sort of arena it was, what sort of fake animals were put in there and maybe the list of how old everyone was who was put in there cuz they did say finnick one younger than anybody else and he was 14. So that means every time a 13-year-old or 12-year-old was put in there they died. They have never been the final person and threw out all the stuff online. I've tried to Google who won in each year and there are still years. We don't know who won because there were 75 hunger games and we don't have 75 winners listed. We don't know who all of the winners were and some of the winners. We do know we don't know what year they're from

It could be the in group vs out group thing, Katniss and Peeta are considered their friends, or perhaps possessions, so they're part of the group, and people care more easily about members of their groups than random strangers, and in this country the districts aren't just strangers, they're the rebelling backwaters to the capital people. Or it could be they feel they know them, the parasocial relationship is strong there. Fostered by the system of games, victory tours, sponsors, interviews, playing up the mask they wear for the games as their personality etc.

Even in the books, its really implied that Katniss and Peeta are the first of the children she has escorted she has gotten close to and with that the fog had started to lift before the first game had started. She talks about the previous tributes eating with their hands and the shock of it all the first dinner with peeta and katniss. I imagine it would be hard to connect with and feel emotional about tributes that are reinforcing the idea that the districts are less than. Imagine all your tributes don't talk, or only cry when you talk to them. But then you get peeta and katniss, who are joking, holding conversation with you. That would begin to warp your ideals pretty quickly.

Yes, another reviewer who read the book and watched the movie both said the insta-spawning dogs from the movie made no sense in killing Thresh first. If the gamemakers can control where they spawn, then why not put them right next to Katniss and Peeta to appease Snow (after Katniss treated Rue's body with reverence), and then have the final showdown be between Cato and Thresh - the two strongest tributes? The dogs make more sense in being lab creations that can't spawn just anywhere, and they're only used AFTER Thresh is dead.

Since he’s working 6 days a week in the mines, he doesn’t have time to hunt for his family. He would never take money from Katniss, so she brings them game. She gives game to one lady who sells soup. She also sells to peace keepers and then spends the money in they “black market.” She tries to spread the money around the district in a way that won’t insult anyone. Finnick and Johanna are essentially bitter, traumatized old vets and they're only about 24-25 years old. Finnick was *14* when he won and was forced to be a prostitute probably right after he won (the child sexual exploitation isn't talked about enough in addition to the child murder). Hell, Haymitch might as well be a senior citizen in their world and he's still in his 30s. I feel like in this whole series you can easily forget how *young* everyone is, even including the audience- let's not forget that this story about a brutal dictatorship that forces children to kill each other and pimps out the survivors is for middle schoolers.

So of course, the books always do a movie adapted story more justice, and what you mention at 33:15 is actually addressed in the book. There is a lot of time between the announcement of the quarter quell and the reaping, so in the books Katniss, Peeta, and even Haymitch spent all of their time training to go back in. It was really cool because Peeta was the one motivating the other two the most. They would expertise and lift weights in the morning and spend the afternoon working on physical combat. It was also neat cause other District 12 characters were involved helping them prepare. Katniss’ mom kept them on a strict diet to beef up, Prim helped tend to their sore muscles, even Gale was willing to help Peeta and Haymitch by teaching them how to make snares and other survival stuff in the woods. They could only do so much in a movie, but those details are important because it explains how elevated their skills have become, especially Peeta, considering he killed the giant, muscley bald guy from District 2 at the end of the games (offscreen but it gets addressed in the books).

One thing id say is i dont think Katniss ever loves Gale. He loves her but Katniss is focused on her own survival and the aftermath of the games. Shes does feel something for Peeta and it grows through their experiences. She develops feelings for him because he understands. I really need to read the books again but i do think they made a lot more of a love triangle thing than it ever was in the books. The morphling who sacrificed herself for Peeta did it because he spent time with her and the male morphling. He drew them pictures and probably showed them more tenderness than either of them had probably experienced in years. Though i think she wanted to help the rebellion, she died for Peeta alone.

Yeah you’re right, obviously it’s not the focus but there was way more Peeta and Katniss bonding scenes in the books, especially outside the arena and you can really feel them really connecting to each other. Gale liking Katniss was such a shock to her and more felt like because they were old friends that she felt guilty about it, like maybe she should like him because that’s what people expect. Obviously she cares about him, but as a friend and he does keep making her feel guilty because of his reactions

I reread the books lately and I had the same question about why they'd put the tributes in water since District 4 tributes would be the only ones who would know how to swim (that's how Annie Cresta, the girl Mags volunteered for, won her games, she was the best swimmer when her arena flooded), it's the reason Katniss was confused when Finnick did CPR on Peeta, she's not a doctor and most people in 12 didn't go to the lake her father taught her to swim in. But it turns out, book-wise, they were all wearing special belts that acted as floatation devices for them in the water. I can see why they'd opt not to include that in the films, it probably would've been an unnecessary hassle to make for such a minor detail. Also a huge reason Katniss couldn't carry Peeta- aside from the fact that he was still recovering from his heart stopping and the fact that the fog messed just about paralysed whatever it touched- is because he has a prosthetic leg in the book, the injury that he was limping for in the first film nearly poisoned and killed him. The Capital never gave him a leg he can run with for these games so he stumbles often. Since the first film didn't delve into it they didn't include that detail for this one.

She could have died several times. She could have been the one who hit the forcefield or died at the monkeys arms or because of the fog. Reading the book I always thought it was Snow's idea and no one from the rebels could have stopped him.

Katniss nightmare is mostly about hunger game and back in arena while peeta nightmare is actually him lost katniss forever (either by death or not peeta never explain further). So their moment in train wasnt actually their first and only night they sleep holding each other. Peeta also using drawing to handle his ptsd. He painting all the scene and tribute potrait. And in book, katniss nvr love gale. The first kiss that snow show was actually initiate by gale and happen in forest. Katniss did kiss gale when gale passout after the flocking while he in pain. Katniss thought and feeling is so full of anxiety, ptsd and surviving she dont have room to think about romance.

One thing that the movies don't convey as well as the books is how the games are set up to create division in the districts to keep them from uniting to rebel. You noted the racial segregation in 11. In addition in 12 for example there is a strong division between the merchant families and the mining families. The mining families are dark haired and described as having olive skinned, where the merchant families are almost entirely blond haired and blue eyed. Prim and Katniss' mother are blonde because Mrs. Everdeen defied tradition to marry a miner she loved. But she's apparently the only living merchant's daughter who has done so. The merchant families are still poor, but they rarely have to put there names in extra times for food, so the mining families are much more likely to lose their children to the hunger games. There is a lot of resentment. Gale is really annoyed that Katniss is friends with the mayor's daughter in the books. And the hunger games is the only exposure to other districts, so the only time people in the districts see someone from another district it is killing one of their friends' or neighbors' children.

One of my favorite series. Your commentary is enjoyable without being obnoxious. I might make a point that other reactions don't seem to grasp. First Katniss is what 16 at the beginning. Lost her father; unsure at what age' grew up hunting with Gale. Who's a friend Not her "love" interest. Especially considering her PTSD even prior to the games. (Poverty, knowing how fragile her existence is, death of her dad and traumatized mom, forcing her to be mother to Prim, care taker to mom and several years of being a potential tribute). Unlike young men and boys with testosterone flowing, she is not interested in either one romantically. She told Gale she'd never have kids. Our culture pushes the romance angle while Katniss' words and actions demonstrate romance is the farthest thing from her mind. I get frustrated with people who hate on her for her relationship inexperience and their inability to grasp her "real life" circumstances, in spite of Lawrence's commendable acting. Spoil alert: It is only through Peta's character and goodness in these first episodes that Katniss develops true affection for Peta. As each young man develops their character and Katniss herself matures she will come to know her heart and mind. Great character developments.

Sometimes it's really unfair how heroes are chosen. Most of them don't even want to lead people or be the face of a cause, they just want to protect what's dear to them. But it's like a butterfly effect - people saw how brave and compassionate Katniss was and decided to follow her; decided that she's a great role model. Someone to look up to, who gives the people courage to stand up against injustice and cruelty. But this avalanche Katniss involuntarily started developed a force that grew out of her control and if she wanted it or not, everyone chose her as the mockingjay. 🔥🔥🔥 So yeah, she was a reluctant hero but she eventually saw that she had more power than she ever realized and used it for good.

Yeah, once the Quarter Quell gimmick was announced, the victor trio go on a special diet to pack on pounds of muscle while exercising in strength building and weapons training. They even get Haymitch's hands to stop shaking from tapering off alcohol well enough that he can accurately throw daggers. It made them feel less helpless as the next reaping drew closer. Katniss's mentality in the arena changed too. She knew she was heading into that cornucopia for weapons instead of running away from the initial bloodbath like last time. Lucky for her she already knew how to swim and get there fast. Other tributes didn't always know how; the suits they wore in the arena had life preserver buoys built into their belts so the tributes didn't immediately drown after leaving their pedestals. The outfits described in the books seemed a little too silly to picture so I really liked how they altered the suits' look for the movies.

Astounding reaction to Catching Fire! One of the reasons I love this sequel is how they showed us that even after winning, Katniss, Peeta, and the other victors were easily traumatized and scarred just from surviving the Games. I love the fact it still shows how Katniss’ sacrifice inspired not just people in the Districts but people also in the Capitol as well. Effie is the prime example for change in the Capitol. Before, she just did her job and didn’t care about tributes because there was no guarantee that they’d survive. However with Katniss and Peeta, she came to not only care for them, but she even started to open herself to up and started to see the flaw in the system. Now even she is starting to rebel against the Capitol. Also Joanna’s sneak peak scene is one my fave scenes, especially for the fact that she winks at Hamish. The revelation of Heavensbee’s loyalty to Katniss and the rebellion was so amazingly surprising as they showed him being a masterminded game maker and used President Snow’s lust for revenge on Katniss as a pawn in the ultimate game of deception. I can’t wait for the Mockingjay reactions!!!! Also if you loved Phillip Seymore, I must recommend you to check out his movie Twister with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. 🏹🔥❤️❤️‍🔥

I’m sure it’s been mentioned in other comments but the reason they recover the bodies so quickly in this games is because of Katniss showing respect to Rue’s body with the flowers etc. No one had ever done that in any games before, and other times tributes would brutalize the dead bodies. Katniss showing reverence to Rue’s body is part of the origin of the rebellion, they couldn’t risk that in this games.

Peeta killed the first baboon in mid jump, saving Katniss, so it was funny when you asked what Peeta was going to do.

Of all Katniss' outfits the wedding dress to mockingjay transformation is the only one that fully lives up to the book description.

I found it so interesting that you mention Finnick as Aquaman. Alan Ritchson who is the tribute from District 1, the brother. He played Aquaman in the tv show Smallville.

In the book, Thresh is killed fighting Cato and the fight is shown during the recap show after the games. Lots of more intricate details in the books that I miss while watching the movies. I always prefer to watch movies first for just that reason.

I miss Katniss' internal monologues. I like reading the book first most times so I come in with the knowledge, but I understand you not wanting the disappointment Question- have you ever disliked a movie and decided not to read the book because of it?

Just in case no one has said it yet, but after winning the hunger games the victors weren't actually free to live their lives, they were bought and sold to influential people for pleasure, and if they refused - which they could do - the capital would kill a loved one. so when she says she has no one left she loves its because she refused to be sold and sexually abused. Finnic also aludes to this when he's talking to Katniss near the horses when he says 'I haven't traded in anything as common as money in years" its because he has been passed around and learned to play the game of getting secrets out of the influential people who bought him - tyring to find a benefit to what he though was an inescapable part of being a victor. The only reason Katniss isn't subjected to this lifestyle is because Cenna bought her to keep her from having to go through all of that.

Why say this now… they’ve probably seen mockingjay already but this is a spoiler, they will hear this information in the next movie and if they don’t then explain it in that reaction

No, the only reason Katniss isn’t subjected to this is because she has Peeta and no one dares to mess with their romance. They basically saved each other from that fate.
