Honored for my video to be mentioned here, Philip! Thank you! I just love the way this book (and series) explores identity and behavior derived from societal conditioning, trauma, and history. I've never read Sonny's Blues, but the premise reminds me so much of Pink Floyd's The Wall involving a drugged up rock star, Pink, having flashbacks of his father dying in WWII and other traumatic memories creating "bricks in the wall." Trauma thrives on avoiding a courageous look at the past. Tribalism is a key component when a whole support system (society, family) relies on the perpetuation of avoidance. I really appreciated your discussion on that, and I love the different perspectives offered in this series! I can't wait to watch the spoiler-filled discussion!

Midnight Tides is easily one of my favorites in the series. Maybe it's that by this point you 'get' what Erickson is doing, so starting out fresh gives you a better grounding all over again? It's almost cohesive enough to work as a stand-alone more than many in the series. And it comes with Erickson's most "stereotypical" fantasy setup. 2 kingdoms at war! 3 brothers in each!... well, of course it's not going to be very straightforward, now is it.

The videos I'm now looking forward to the most are 'Discussing Fantasy Archetypes.' Would be interesting to see where my characters fall. What you mentioned about cycles in behaviour is something I have witnessed first hand as well. My only disappointment perhaps, with Midnight Tides, was that while I loved the interaction between Tehol and Bugg (best humour in the series so far maybe), I possibly didn't fully understand that particular story arc. It appeared as though Tehol was manipulating some Malazan version of a stock market crash, and it seemed unfinished. Maybe the spoiler discussion will help. Do hope he returns, he shot right up into my top five favourite Malazan characters. I also agree about Shakespeare, love his stories, not a massive fan of the language perhaps ha ha

I know I'm essentially a year late to your and AP's series, but I started reading Malazan because Mike's Book Reviews read along, but I started it late and couldn't catchup. That said, I just finished Midnight Tides and I liked it very much. At first I was thinking, "UGH! Another character backstory" like the start of House of Chains, but as I went further I really enjoyed getting more of Trull's background. So many other characters that were intriguing and I really really loved the Tehol/Bugg relationship and especially the dialogue. It was magnificent! Probably more how you'd see dialogue on a sitcom rather than in real life, but for me it really brought much needed levity to the book given a lot of the things that happen. I really love these discussions, can't wait until I hammer out Book 6.

I'm so happy to see a resurgence of love for Erikson's (and Esslemont's!) work. Been a reader of theirs for quite a few years. I remember I had several attempts at reading Gardens of the Moon before actually succeeding ;-) Then I read the first 3 books in the series, and then put the series on hold for some years for various reasons (getting an education as a psychologist/working). Then I returned to the books after the main series was done, and read all of it :-) Since then, I've read every Malazan-world related book from Erikson and Esslemont that has come out :-) One of my favourite book series ever! :-) Now I'm watching all of these KZread channels with some great Malazan-discussions. Your point about Shakespeare's humour is great. And we have to keep in mind that Shakespeare's elisabethan language has mostly become high register since his death, partly because of the cultural significance of his works. There are a lot of very crude puns that were lost due to changes in pronunciation. For example, there is a bit in As You Like It which in today's RP sounds just like run of the mill vanitas symbolism, but in reconstructed Original Pronunciation doubles as a joke about an STI. "From hour to hour, We ripe and ripe. And from hour to hour, We rot and rot. And thereby hangs a tale." In OP it sounds very much like "From whore to whore, We rape and rape. And from whore to whore, We rot and rot. And thereby hangs a tail."

These vids have become a treat for finishing Malazan book. Kind of like ice-cream after a massive main course. I can listen to you both for hours. I'm loving every Malazan book more and more. I loved the balance of comedy and tragedy and the parallels between the two sets of brothers. Tehol & Bugg, very strong contender for my favourite Malazan duo. Remind me a lot of Blackadder and Baldrick. Or more accurately Jeeves and Wooster tho I'm less familiar with that series. Honestly most Malazan duos so far are likely my favourites in Fantasy. I was going to take a break from the series for a couple of months after this but I think instead I'll wait til after Bonehunters and then treat Books 7-10 as a "trilogy" Also, awesome to hear AP is a fan of Iain M Banks' the Culture. I adore those books.

Hey Phillip!! Abhishek here.. we have talked before and wasn't that a nice conversation... Just here to get something off my chest.. I was rereading the 10 books of Erikson and I am in memories of ice.. And all I can think of right now is, He is better than we all can think of.. Believe me Phillip.. you, me, AP canavan.. all other.. we don't understand.. he is better than we give him credit for.. The mastery...the control.. the understanding of emotions and conversations and at the same time, the thrill of adventure and understanding of why fantasy fiction exists.. He is a MASTER. Just tell him Phillip.. just tell him.. there are people in this world who do understand his achievements.. He is the best at understanding the emotions and feeling.. tell him that. Tell him, that this is greatest achievement. He is the best at understanding the feelings and emotions.. And then, his skills at giving us those feelings in the way he has.. He is a MASTER.

Hello, Abhishek! Well said about Erikson. He is indeed a master of the craft of writing, and he has not received anywhere near enough credit for that. I hope more people will get an inkling of just how wonderful Malazan is. Yes, it’s a very successful series, but I do believe it deserves so much more because of what you describe. Cheers!

Great discussion. One thing I would have mentioned is Erikson’s use/subversion of the quest trope. But you will probably get into that in the spoiler vid. Unfortunately, almost all of the cool/hilarious stuff in this book is spoilery. Imagine how much it would ruin people’s experience going in to know that there is an undead nymphomaniac.... Oops. The best thing to come from these videos are your new titles. AP is definitely, from this point forward, Professor Fireballs.

That’s what I like to hear! The titles are essential. However, for A.P., I’ve decided the correct spelling is P’Rofessor Fireballs since he’s so fond of apostrophes in names 😁. We do talk about some subversion in the spoiler part, but not so much about the subversion of the quest in the form of the Sengar brothers seeking the “gift”. That would have been a great topic!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Have you read any Neal Stephenson. In his book, Reamde, there is an hilarious passage dealing with the “Apostropocalypse.” One thing I love about your discussions is that it’s the only place where you can see fantasy discussions that seriously engage with stuff like Baldwin and Shakespeare. I'm catching up... Nice Discussion! I agree with you. Great literatur does not always have to be hyper seriuos. I would although add the theme of compassion in the face of terrible crimes. Trull being in the situation that his brother is a dictator. How do you deal with that. Should you act against him? Can you be judged for not acting out of love? At the end Fear is choosing the way of rebellion (Hero?) How do you think of a Person standing near a tyrant for the reason of compassion and hope of changing him?
