Oh when I'm talking about Trull and Onrack protecting the "throne of shadow" I meant to say "first throne".

Whats fun about re-reading midnight tides is all the reveals have SO MUCH foreshadowing. The Mael one, theres so many hints dropped all over the place. The Errant one. "Ah, what an errant, troubled lad..."

Midnight Tides is the perfect mid-series book. New characters, a little bit shorter, but also more self-contained, funny as hell (in places), and sets the stage for the second half the series.

When Bugg was revealed as Mael I legitimately gave out a “whoa” - big moment. The dialogue and interaction between Tehol and Bugg was probably the best in the series so far. Just incredible.

Tehol and Bugg create some of the most fun scenes to read! The Mael reveal was massive.

Glad you are enjoying the books. Iron Bars is indeed a bad ass. When he cuts through like 6 of Rhulads guards to then punch him in the face so hard it breaks his neck and kills him, epic as hell! The Mael/Bugg reveal. The awakening of Silchas Ruin. The Brys Rhulad fight at the end. So much awesome stuff happens in this book. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Bonehunters. It is equally, if not more, epic.

Please always put the word Malazan in your video title of all Malazan videos. It helps a lot in YT algorithm and recommend the video to more people. Loved your analysis and thoughts. Midnight Tides is one of my favorite Malazan books, and its really well written. I think you could have spoken a bit more about Trull, his strength of character, the depth to him, his humbleness and compassion, all just stood out and made him one of my favorite characters in the series. Along with the characters and storylines, you can also talk about some of the best scenes, like the battle of the Letheri against the Edur, the battle of Kuru Quan against the Edur, Trull's fight through the icelands against the Jheck, like that. Waiting for your Bonehunters review now.

Yay! Really glad to see you continuing on your Malazan journey, I really enjoyed your MoI and HoC videos, was hoping you didn't quit lol. Not that you should feel pressured, just saying I'm happy you're still going :) MT really is a tragedy. Erikson has said it's very intentionally Shakespearean, and he nailed that, didn't he? And even though it's a very focused book (especially compared to earlier Malazan books) it's still got plenty of cool and interesting stuff going, and really adds so much to the entire series arc. Which as you know now, MT is the last "setup" book, so to speak, as tBH is where it all starts to come together. And as you know with RG, you get to continue all the Lether stuff there, but again things are coming together. The structure of this series really boggles my mind when I think about it lol Oh one other thing you'll find interesting -- Erikson has said one inspiration for this book was in American history -- what if Sitting Bull, after Battle of the Little Bighorn, had marched to Washington D.C. and conquered it? What would that look like? And so obviously the Edur are the Native Americans in that analogy, and it's pretty cool to think about. As you said the capitalist society of Lether isn't strictly American, but in this analogy it is Anyway great video, looking forward to the next!

Thanks Chris! Never gave up haha just got busy with work towards the start of the year. I'm loving this series. MT really is the last setup book. I do feel like the Bonehunters and what I've read of Reapers Gale moves a bit faster now that I have so much more context for the world, gods, magic system etc. The Native American analogy is interesting, I can see that influence throughout a lot of the series. Coltaine and the Wickans are clearly based on Native American tribes. Appreciate you coming back to watch!

@@taylor-kenny yep makes sense, life is more important than KZread. Definitely 😃 And yeah good call on Wickans, also definitely influenced by Native Americans. Anyway thanks for replying 😄

SPOILERS: The tiste edur that bug kills when defending tehol (by dumping him into the warren of ruse at a crushing water depth) is the tiste edur body that Paran and Quick Ben find in book 3, Memories of Ice. They come close to figuring out what killed him. Their best guess was rapid decompression, but they couldn't figure out how that was possible. Bug was so pissed off, he yeeted that edur down and through the warren of ruse and the body popped up on another continent, flopped up and out of a shallow stream on the opposite side of the world.

Same here, first time I read it, I finished the first book and got halfway through the second. 10 years later I picked it up again and just read non stop. I actually just finished book 10 today. The ending is worth all the effort it takes to get there.

SPOILER (if it still matters), do you remember in one of the previous books a group of people coming across a body on the shore that was grey skinned and apparently crushed to death? One of the people Mael kills after discovering Tehol's body he kills by throwing him deep into his warren. Same edur.

Great review! Midnight Tides has been one of my favourites so far and I believe it also works quite well as a standalone novel, given the entirely new cast and setting. I’ve heard Erikson say that this novel was him wanting to write a tragedy and, well, yeah… he certainly did! 😂 I think that’s why Tehol and Bugg work so well in this book. Their humour is so contrasting to everything else going on that I was left with a massive sense of relief whenever they had a scene together. I also love that it’s totally Steven Erikson riffing on old British sitcoms like Fawlty Towers, Jeeves and Wooster etc. I recently finished Reaper’s Gale and have just started Toll the Hounds, so hopefully I’m not too far behind you! I’ve slowly become obsessed with Malazan, more or less. It’s just so good! It actually didn’t click for me until House of Chains, believe it or not 🤷🏻‍♂️ The further I get into it the more emotionally impactful everything is becoming as well. Reaper’s Gale definitely had me tearing up a few times 😢 Have subscribed and will for sure watch your future vids! Great work, man. Looking forward to watching more! 😁

Iron Bars is such a badass, that scene with the Toblakai was absolute bonkers. The Crimson Guard Avowed in general are just so awesome. I had to edit my comment cus i don't want to spoil in case you don't want to know where Iron Bars will next appear in the Malazan books. Also, awesome summary and can't wait for the Bonehunters review.
