    I’ve only experienced one “go around” in all of my years flying as a passenger. At the time I didn’t think anything of it, but after watching enough of these videos I feel like I should have hugged and thanked the crew for their good judgement as I was safely stepping off the plane.

    I experienced go around after touching the runway in a Kingfisher airlines flight in Hyderabad airport back in 2011. That was my last flight, after that I never got into a plane, I always travel by my car.

    There are captains who calmly land airliners with holes in the sides. There first officers who calmly land airliners with the captain hanging out of a hole where the left windshield once was. There are captains who carry out water landings. And then we have this good ol' boy.

    @@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co there was even a "landing" where all the controls of the plane failed. They managed to maneuvre the plane to an airport using nothing but the engines to control the plane.

    @@ABC_DEF I get that he fell asleep. I understand that loss of life happened. A lot of accidents happen because people fall asleep. We require rest, but we live in a world that doesn't respect that basic need very well. These industries are exhausting, and expectations are very high. I imagine in places where regulations aren't as good as we have here it can be even more body stressing. Idk if he forgot or not, I just know that falling asleep is not always voluntary. And maybe he didn't forget. Either way- people have perished, and that is very difficult to absorb. Love still reigns. Peace and blessings!     @@alenabrown4249 The pilot was rushing to land instead of taking the safer option which was to "go around" -- meaning skip the landing he was planning, circle and get the plane in a better place and then land (which would have taken longer). He took the shorter, risker option instead. The implication of that comment was that pilots sometimes make risky decisions when they shouldn't, because it isn't just their lives at risk... they have passengers. They should always take the safer option. They weren't implying that he literally forgot he had passengers.

    BTW, it makes no difference in the responsibility if you have 1 human behind, or 300. The responsibility is the same. It’s same as pregnant, or dead. One cannot become „more pregnant“ or „more dead“. As a pilot you are responsible. That’s it. One can forget that, or one can be less aware of that. But the responsibility remains.

    It’s so simple. Introduce a rule that says that a plane should always go around if either pilot calls it. Both have to agree on a landing , any discord and you go around. Period. That rule obviously doesn’t exist. Why?

    Brian M It’s the captains job to persuade the FO that it’s safe to land , if he can’t do that then it’s not safe to land. Nobody is talking about anyone “ ordering people around” . Instead of overruling his FO , a good Captain should seriously ask himself why his FO is not happy about the landing. The FO should be there as a safeguard against errors. If not then why is he there? Going around is not a disaster. Crashing is. It’s like the golden rule in driving or pulling out at a junction. “ If in doubt don’t “

    I've watched enough of these to sense some of these captains have big egos and I wouldn't be surprised if a captain will still try to land even after an F/O disagrees.

    Its amazing how the mistake of 1 person can cost so many their lives. Going around would have cost them a few extra minutes but they would all be alive, but because the pilot thought "he could do it" no doubt he isn't among the 8 surviving people. This is heartbreaking and the co-pilot tried his best to avoid a disaster.

    There’s a sign on the highway not too far from that airport…..”Better to be Mr. Late than Late Mr.” Certainly applies to this flight. What a tragedy. I landed there several times, decades ago, and it was always jarring to see the plane go from blazing fast to standstill in seemingly about 10 seconds time. An experience unlike any other landing.

    It has to be at least 35 years ago, but we were trying to land in Kansas City in a thunderstorm. As well as I can remember it, we seemed about 30 seconds from the runway and flew into a downdraft and it felt like the bottom of the plane had fallen out. The next part is very clear - full throttle and we flew right through the length of the runway at about 500 feet, maybe lower? We slowly climbed through the turbulence and went around. We all talk about the skills of pilots and I'll forever be grateful for this particular crew.

    I had an experience at DXB when EK had to cancel touch-down & go-around at just about 100 feet from ground. I felt very bad then, as I had a connecting flight to catch. I profusely thank those pilots now.

    Not when the pilot uses reverse thrust and then tries to take off again. The saddest part is that if he had continued the reverse thrust, the aircraft may have been damaged, but a lot of lives would have been saved.

    Preliminary findings of this crash indicate the pilot touched down 1,000 metres (3,300 feet) beyond runway threshold, in wet conditions, and was thus unable to stop his aircraft before the runway ended. He had enough fuel to divert to another airport. This crash would seem to be due to pilot error.

    I don't know why everyone seems to assume that civil service jobs are cushy....I worked for the state for years.....HARDEST job I ever had...worked 8-20 hours of overtime every week for years without pay. They simply would not approve overtime. My job consisted of the secured housing for 420 families, I simply could NOT just walk away at the end of the day in good conscience without their needs being met. I'm NOT an anolmoly, everyone in my office was just as dedicated.

    @@seateg12 Totally agree. It is the old school that behaved badly. Not these days. You have much more work now. People leave jobs and are not replaced for months and months, sometime over a year, leaving others to do their job and the vacant post work. I have been in that situation, where we worked out how much the council saved by not replacing staff, or delaying any replacement. That is a very old saying about Gov. Jobs that do not apply to todays workers. When I moved from a position, I was replaced by 3 full time staff, so it just shows how much one person was doing.

    That the Autopilot system did"nt pressurize the cabin in that Helios flight in 2005 when flying at 28,000 feet because a technichian forgot to flip an external switch back to idle after a test so everybody passed out was also very preventable

    saudi flight 163 is the most preventable accident, all passengers and crews initially survived but the pilots delayed the evacuation, causing all to die due to smoke inhalation

    Aircrew can have lots of good training related to the need to work as a team, but when a Captain's ego takes over there's not much the FO can do. Is there any psychometric testing for pilots, at least when qualifying as a Captain? I realise that tiredness was a major factor in this crash, but the Captain's ego wouldn't allow him to suffer the potential indignity of a go-around. This was as much about a fatal character flaw as anything else.

    I know this is an old comment, but I’d like to point out that Captain ego and unwillingness to cooperate was a huge issue and even caused multiple accidents in the past, so much so that airlines began a mandatory training program to ensure aircrew and cabin crew were on a more equal footing when flying.     Not a science student, nor a frequent flier, but when this was mentioned that the pitch was way higher than usual, it simply occured that no big deal, they can 'go around' and bring it to the apt height, but the Great Captain with thousands of flying hours and 16 landing experience on the same runway, couldn't agree for a simple procedure... I have seen a lot of crash and flight failure videos, but this had the most stupid reason of all. RIP the poor souls and the most I feel sorry for the First Officer. Peace to all.

    In this case foresure, the F/O could of landed the plane and the captain could of had a good night sleep in a motel bed ,but it is always easier to say after the fact, just wish sometimes the arrogance between captains and F/O, stop or F/O grow some balls and think of the safety if their cargo take control of the situation

    Unfortunately there were a lot of bad decisions on the captains part beyond ignoring the fo... if he had just followed through with landing instead of trying to initiate a to/ga after touchdown, the plane would’ve stopped in time. It may have ended up in the arrestor bed, but everyone could’ve walked away and the ac been repaired

    A left hook from the FO would have been appropriate action. Been done before, and everyone lived. I don't fly right seat, and yes, I have been jarred in the jaw, once, and it woke me up!. And we all lived happily after. That was 30 yrs ago, lesson never forgotten.

    The flight which killed my close friend's father, and lot many family friends who were coming back from Dubai to their hometown Mangalore.     Your editing is so good. At the end of each video, when you sum up the investigation findings and alternate between text and slow videos of the plane still on air, it just breaks my heart. It feels as though the airplane could have been saved, as if there is a way to rewind and save those lives.. It feels like the airplane is still stranded up, somewhere, where everyone is still alive and nobody made any horrible decisions yet.. Anyways, thank you for your videos!

    Airbus is better than Boeing for that. With an Airbus the pilot wouldn't have been able to do that because the computer limits the dangerous maneuvers.

Another one crashed, because the other pilot did not know the other pilot was PULLING on the Joystick. And Boeing, they have yokes which clearly indicate what the other one is doing. Since they is connected. Another airbus thought it was doing the right thing. However some sensors were frozen. That accident wouldnt have happened if it was a Boeing. Computers. Invented to solve problems which we didnt have before they were invented. And, the more they take over, the more problems we will have to face. Now a days we have automatic braking in cars. And traction control. And all kinds of that shit. Imagine a slippery road, a curve...................... You have acc.................. so the vehicle will slow down when it detects an obstacle................. In a curve, wet roads and slippery conditions......................... "Hi there, mr Tree. Say: Why couldnt you move a little so i would have passed you?" Im sorry, but when a pilot knows how to fly, and knows his aircraft............... That is much better in my opinion. Take cars and safetygear onboard of cars. Belts, airbags. People think they drive a tank. So they act like it. Driving like crazy. Head on collision, each going 50 mph.................... Both engines end up in the trunk of the other car............ And still people think belts and airbags is going to protect them from such. So they drive like it. The more we invent to "feel safe", the illusion which we create for ourselves, the more we will be in danger.

    Excellent post, bertjesklotipino. I've watched so many of these videos where the pilots were made complacent with too much technology that I now use an acronym, FTFPYI (Fly the F**king Plane You Idiot). This pilot thought "SFP" meant his plane would do anything, until he found out the hard way that it wouldn't. We're already seeing the early stages of over-reliance on computers in cars with people dying in Tesla self-driving cars, or the pedestrian killed by the Uber experimental self-driving car.

When Billy Gates launched one of his Windows versions he was confronted with the blue screen and laughed.     Mr M T......... I can not agree, sorry. The Air Singapore accident which you talk about is indeed another example of how people may make mistakes. Sure. It would however have happened with both planes, airbus or boeing. I agree to the rest of what you have said, completely. But there is just one small thing that i can not agree with. And that is that you think we should stop kidding ourselves and move ASAP to full automation. Computers have been invented to solve problems which we DID NOT HAVE before these computers were invented. IF in a computer something breaks down, no way of recovery. You can ofcourse build in safety stuff, redundancy and what not................. But when the device thinks there is a problem, there is a problem. And there wont be any way to land it IF we were to be fooled into thinking automation is the answer. We as people are being restricted too much. We may not use our skills. And that is one of the biggest problems. A skilled pilot may also crash, ofcourse. May make a mistake, ofcourse. BUT: Working together, the chances have been reduced to the absolute minimum in my opinion. The plane however needs to be designed that they CAN work together. The test flight of an airbus went wrong, because some sensor was frozen or something like that. THAT SHOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE. The computer should ALWAYS have an OFF button. But thats just my opinion. Computers only solve problems which we did not have before these fucked up machines were invented. Sure, they make things easier from time to time. And bla bla bla. But just watch what will happen if one day all this shit just stopped functioning................. with an EMP or whatever. Or that the Internet stops functioning for a month. Stores will be empty, everything will be fucked up, because we as humanbeings have become too stupid to not be able to work without these godforsaken pieces of shit. But, thats just an opinion, compadre.

    Every First Officer's nightmare; your captain won't acknowledge a mistake and pride prevents him from correcting. Interestingly, the FO had more experience at this airport according to the video yet the captain was requested to land.

    I believe the captain did have time to; correct his co piolet's mistake of flying too high and then land this plane safely on a shorter distance. These planes do have an incredible stopping distance, once landed full brakes on they can stop very abruptly. An experienced piolet would never sleep on decent in this terrain with his experience, things don't add up and I don't believe this was the outcome on all aspects, it deserved.

    pilots are taught in training that if the captain is doing something that jeopardizes the safety of the aircraft, the first officer can seize control of the aircraft and declare the captain unfit to be at the controls (the reverse is also true) gone are the days where the captain can crash the plane into the ground and theres nothing any other crew members can do about it

    @@IliasJoels depends on the aircraft and the mental state of the captain Assuming the captain acts professionally, the first officer can verbally state I'm taking control due to safety concerns, and at that point the captain must release the controls If however, the captain is not acting professionally and refuses to release the controls, it can go a few ways Airbus: the first officer can press the sidestick priority button to lock the controls to his side only, then the captain's controls won't work, he can also call in a member of the cabin crew to help if necessary Boeing: the first officer will need to physically overpower the captain's control inputs since the control columns are mechanically linked, and again, he can also call in a member of the cabin crew to help if necessary Its also possible that during the fight, the control column or its linkages may break, rendering the aircraft uncontrollable from one or both sides, though I have never heard of that happening

    What's even more sad? The investigation also found that had aggressive use of reverse thrust and maximum manual braking been used the aircraft would have stopped within the paved overrun area of the runway. Furthermore, Boeing standard procedures state that reverse thrust should not be cancelled in an attempt to go around. In other words, once reverse thrust is activated stay committed to the landing by whatever means necessary. A sad revelation in the investigation was that snoring was actually heard on the CVR for the first and only time in history. If there was ever a cause for a mutiny, this was it.

    One of the most asked questions on pilot interviews is: “if you see something is going wrong and you call go around but the captain doesnt listen to you... what do you do?” Even though the captain is clearly in the wrong here the first officer should’ve taken control after shouting go around 2 times or just push toga or push the captains hands forward on the throttle. You can always argue and discuss once safe on the ground but in that moment TAKE ACTION and dont be a sheep. In Asia there is still a big culture regarding the captain as an absolute god, you dont want to know how many first officers died flying into mountains because the captain wanted to commit suicide and they did not want to interfere or say something... they just sat there knowing they were about to die.

    I never understand why at the end of runways, they always seem to have rivers, embankments, roads, hills, or in this case, a damn cliff! Seriously?! Why don't they put some sort of area at the end that brings the plane to a stop in a safe way that doesn't damage the plane too severely.

    Most airports have grass fields for this exact reason. Runways need to be bidirectional, where you can land and takeoff for either direction, so having a landing net would be problematic as you would have to avoid it on landing. Runway concrete/tarmac is already very grippy, and so sandy runways would probably make the tires very hot from friction or shear them. Just no point. Planes already have emergency braking and pilots should abort if they are not within the safety margins to land. However, in this case, a tabletop airport on top of a hill would mean no space for a grass field, or sand area. This is why to land on these you need incredible precision, and pilots know this. Having a mechanism to stop the plane is useless if almost noone uses it and if the plane was going to overrun to use it they should go around. Pilot error was the reason this crashed, captain should have listened to the co-pilot, he knew they were not in the margins to land, but the captain never listened.

    Very similar to how many people we killed in this crash (talking about scenario, not technicality), another crash has happened yesterday killing 17. Now I see that it's also falling from the table top that is killing people(more people). I think Table Top Taxiways needs to be done away with for heavy passenger planes in our country. It's a disaster waiting to happen every time. If the plane would have skided on a even taxiway disaster would have been minimal.

    One crazy incident happened after this incident. Approximately one hour later one survivor fell off the plane walked down hill and there is a railway track and he walked by and reached the nearest main road. And he called his family members who were on the way to airport and asked them to come to his place which was a small local town. And they didn't knew about the crash and asked him why would we come there you should be in airport right now. When he said the flight fell they thought he was bluffing. Whatsover they went there and shocked to see him standing near railway cross with his clothes torn and minor scratches

    The crazy part about it is the OMG moment occurred when there was adequate time to make a well-controlled go-around that most passengers wouldn't even have noticed. Was the captain facing some horrible consequence if he made a good landing after a second approach?

Why is that an OMG moment when you have more than enough time (and fuel too I assume, no mention of any problems with that and also it is normal to have enough left for some more time) to go around and do it properly. It must have been an ego thing or something. I don't know why you can't just leave your ego outside of the cockpit. What good is a landing if you risked dying unneccessarily?

    Well an attempted go around finally became the cause of the crash. The captain tried to do a go around 6 seconds after landing, which is against the procedures of Boeing 737 manual. It was later found that if he didn't try that they wouldn't have crashed

    He could have applied extreme breaks instead of idiotic damn throttle. Nothing wrong runway was exhausted by metres all lives would have been saved. Pilot could have blamed some mechanical error to escape actions. Thug life

    Ron Baruah So what you say proves that all of the captain's decisions/actions were wrong. In addition to that, the first officer should have done two important things: - Wake up the captain way earlier, before starting the approach. - Impose his own authority or should I say responsibility, and make the captain do the Go Around. It's terribly sad to know how easily this accident could've been avoided.

    Yes, go-around requires back to altitude and getting vectored in again for a runway. You have to do the final approach again and it is embarrassing for some captains.

    Edgar Xavier there aren’t any repercussions if the FO wants a go around, he could have done it. But didn’t, he could’ve taken control of aircraft but probably left it to captain....alas Ps. You have to go around if it’s suggested by either to the captain or FO to the captain or the officer..

    Didn't it say the captain has to land there? So that would have to mean the FO never had. So the FO was in an impossible situation, I remember years ago certain airlines and even certain countries still had a very strict hierarchy in a cockpit, even tho that shouldve changed in the 80s / 90s - and they state they have changed - Maybe the FO didn't dare to directly challenge the captain? As someone pointed out, they were too high before the captain even took over, but that shouldn't mean a death sentence. God bless them all.

    Aside from details about the accident here, it's pretty amazing how the 737 has become such a legacy aircraft, not unlike the 747! The 737 has gone through many changes but they are still being built, with no end in sight for this venerable Boeing design!!

    Great job on the video. Great interview question... You call 3 go arounds and the Captain does not respond... what do you do?” 1) tell the tower going around 2) gear handle gear up and yell go around 3) flaps to 15 yell TOGA Go around 4) touch the Captain and say softly come on, go around 5) knock his hand and hit TOGA By then the Captain will go around because he does not want to land gear up and he has to explain the tower what happened..he’ll be pissed but he’ll live. The company would recreate the incident and the FO would be vindicated.. there is a reason the 737 is not certified single pilot.. The FO could have said “i thought you were dead or had a stroke since you were not responding..”

    It was the co piolet that made the mistake, he didn't follow flight plan decent instructions leaving the captain to try to correct under duress, although consider the captain took control, didn't request an emergency landing alert and the tower operations neither had concerns for the landing. It wouldn't take much for the co piolet to push that exelerator forward to deliberately increase speed and overshoot the runway? just an alleged cenario to reconsider. And something's suspicious about any captain sleeping in that terrain while approaching descent and that is; it would never happen allegedly.

    Not that easy in an airplane. He would've probably had to subdue the captain which their would be no time. You can't just take over the controls if the other person isn't willing to let go, it's just gonna cancel each other out. Technically the FO put them in the situation coming in too high.     @@Mandy_39 The captain didn't want to lose his bonus. If they do the go around without any clear reasons of doing this (like bad weather, wind, snow, rain etc.) they get penalties and salary cut. So there was no reasonable reason for go around from the airlines point of view as the incorrect approach is the pilot fault and not a reason. So he just wanted to avoid being penalized..

    Hi. I am landing on the same airport and same runway. This pilot had experience in landing in mangalore airport old runway which is smaller than the new runway which is double the size. But unfortunately after the inaugration of the new runway the incident happened. Sad to say I lost my friend in this crash. RIP

    So sad this happened. Having served in the US Air Force we keep hearing the "rules", out of which #1 is you can always go around, #2 never force an airplane to land, #3 flying VFR into IFR will get you killed 99% of the time, #4 crosswind indicators are there for a reason, and #5 airplanes fly themselves, we just steer them around.

    This crash really hits home. I have lost a dear friend of mine who went back to mangalore after finishing grade 12th in India for his higher education. And my friend lost his parents and sister who were travelling back to India, the only reason he stayed back was his exams after which he would go to india as well. Being from mangalore, I have flown in this airport many times and have had experienced a couple of go arounds expecially during rainy seasons. Never rally thought of them until this crash happened.

Thanks a lot 😓😓 I am belongs to the same city(Mangalore) where this plane crash was happened. my friend's uncle is one of the survivors (he jumped from the emergency exit door before the plane overshoots the runway. Its 8 years now, end of many lives&dreams..😓😓😓 It is the worst aviation disaster in India Edut : 2021 - 11 years

    It would have been impossible to jump from the emergency door while the plane was still on the runway but I’m glad he survived

    I don’t even know the first thing about flying and I can tell trying to descend from that altitude with only 2 miles left is a horrible idea.
