@@awain6566 for his way yes, but you can do a base layer of worm casing(dirt thats been processed by worms) and root tabs or grow tabs, and cap it with about 1 to 2" of medium grit sand. which the root tabs essentially have all these ingredients. I have about 6 planted tanks and a this is one method thats worked for me. But from the bottom, its usually dirt, medium gravel (bacteria growth area), and sand cap. There are tons of planting "recipes" out there that work great, but alot follow the same pattern. A side note, incase you accidentially use something with fertalizers in it, let the plants grow and get rooted about a month, and every week do a 1/4 or smaller (1-2gallon) water change and then do a quick test for any axcess ammonia before adding fish

Would you estimate about 1/2 cup fish emulsion? 1/4 c Liquid Iron? 1/4 to 1/2 c Calcium powder? (Those ingredients from other video)

Thanks for listing the ingredients in the description, it is very helpful and convenient. I think I have most of these on hand from last year when I was growing mushrooms. I just bought a used 55 gallon tank today so this video is perfect for me to set up my tank using the same proportions.

Hey Father Fish Thanks for sharing your recipe. It's a good one. Very similar to what I do. My mix i simpler than yours, but contains fewer primary nutes (I eventually dose with macro nutrients in the form of plant tabs I make myself out of fertilizer and gelatine). My way is not necessarily better, just easier, and it works really well. I've tried almost everything over the years. I got away from using blood meal and manure. I found that tanks witht that much nitrogen took too long to balance properly, although I've used those additives quite succesfully too. I came across my mix somewhat accidentally. In California where I'm from, the soil below the topsoil is usually a dense clay. I would go out into the forrest, scrape back most of the top several inches of top soil, and collect the bottom inch of topsoil, and the top inch of clay. If I got that mix from a redwood forrest, the results would be truly magical. Oak forrest mix was good, but not quite as good for some reason. Once done, I'd replace the topsoil I scraped back, leaving the site virtually untouched. I would use an inch of that mix below 1.5 to 3, inches of silica sand, and that's it. I sometimes use very fine gravel instead, but regular ol, clean, silica sand, is best. Here in central/south Florida, we don't have redwood forrests, obviously, or clay for that matter, so I have to "make my own". I use a mixture of store bought organic potting soil, or home-made soil (compost and peat, leaving out the perlite and fertilizer), and unfired terra cotta pottery clay, at a ratio of 4:1 soil to clay. Be careful when purchasing terra cotta clay from art stores. These days, regular pottery clay is a bit harder to come by, because the stuff they sell at Michael's and Walmart, etc. says "no kiln necessary" which means it has some sort of polymer mixed into it. It must be, regular ol' red clay, which I get from a pottery supply company. Get the clay very wet, like the consistency of warm peanut butter, and mix homogenously with the soil. Sometimes I add an additional inch layer of soil mixed with sand (1:1), without clay, above the clay-soil layer. Then a layer of clean sand on top. If bluegreen algae becomes a problem, other than too much light, it means tht the pH of the mix needs to be lower, which can be achieved by decreasing the amount of clay used. I've been considering using azomite as a mineral addditive in my next set up too. I've never tried that one. I find it so strange that people believe that aquatic plants somehow prefer to grow in washed gravel, when I've never seen plants in a natural environment growing in anything other than sand and organic silty mud. Exactly, homogenizing the mix aids in root penetration as well as lowering the pH of the clay with peat/compost, which helps to liberate the iron and magnesium, in the clay. The danger is that if the pH is too high from the clay, then silica will begin to be soluble (I've actually proven this in a laboratory, using polyheteromolybdate colorimetric analysis). Dissolved silica is steroids for blue-green algae. At pH 7 or below there is virtually no dissolution of silica. Above 7.5 it begins to be a real problem. I actually like a lot of algae, but I can't stand stinky, bluegreen, carpet algae.

Well I did the fitted tank 125g. It is sitting full of water. I’ll plant the plants tomorrow and turn in the filter and light. There’s no turning back now. Only time will tell. The tank looks great with the black sand cap. Thanks for guiding me Father Fish.

Hi newbie here, got your channel recommendation from aquarium co-op , I want to ask doesn't calcium chloride release chlorine in water?

Father Fish its me again. I was putting some plants in my tank tonight using my hand and I noticed after I put my fingers into the dirt layer that it had a smell like that of sceptic water. I also noticed while adding more sand for cap as you suggested, the bottom of my rocks have turned black where they sit on the sand and they too have a sceptic water smell. Same for a plant that I pulled up and moved, the roots had the same smell. Is this normal? Maybe I added to much cow manure? I am concerned about my plants not growing with the high ammonia levels and the constant gas bubbles coming up. I have been poking the dirt to allow the gas to release. The water doesn't smell bad itself, but gets a sulfer smell after a while, which could be due to the seachem prime i'm using. This is why I have been doing water changes. Also I am 2 weeks into my tank cycling using your method and my ammonia is staying at around 6-8 ppm and nitrite is around 2 ppm, even 2 days after a 60% water change, and my city water is low on both of those. My nitrates are going up but neither of the other 2 have been going down. Ammonia has been very high from the beginning. My cap is about 2.5" of sand maybe a little more. My fish are alive and well however. Most people freak out when I tell them the levels inside the tank. But i've been using seachem prime and stability. Hoping the tank will cycle eventually.

@@afterburnerboyz FF is using the very scientific "handfull-tossed-into-bucket" method so I'm talking about ratios. If you have soft (under 7 out of tap like me) I would hesitate to add any peat but if I did add it I would do 8x soil, 4x manure, 4x peat (or less)

@@afterburnerboyz Because the substrate dopes not come in direct contact with the water column it does not directly affect hardness. Over time it may make soft water harder but that should be very gradual. the x stands for ratio but can be assumed to be cups.

Hi Father Fish! I'm starting to order the list of ingredient. I want to add to an existing aquarium that has an old ADA amazon 2 soil with a sand cap. For a tank with existing soil, should I go with all the ingredient given above, or just the "additive"? Excited to get started on it. It's funny, I have a truted friend at a fish store and he told me, most aquascape soil are made on purpose so you consistently need to buy their line of product. It sound a little deceiving but I'm not really surprised.

Hi I live near your shop in Florida I beleive (about an hour) I just want to set up one nice dirt tank since I'm in an apartment. Because of this I'm not looking to have a collection of all these wonderful ingredients until later in life when I want to start collecting more tanks. Would you ever sell your dirt mixture? Got some of your dirt for my tank I setup after Christmas. Only running a sponge filter in it. Squeezed out the heavy buildup once. It immaculately clear. Only had one episode where I overfed it but learned. I am curious about a crawfish only tank for my boy. He loves them. Thinking blue and Mexican Ruby. Substrate sounds challenging since they like to burrow. Anyway thoughts?

You will be fine just build a food web so those nutrients can precipitate through your substrate. If you are really concerned, there is a method to place frozen sheets of Father Fish supplement under your sand substrate , but I’d advise you to go to my discord and get one of the fine folks to help you with that process. Hi Father Fish. Thank you for the informative videos! I’m just starting my first dirted tank. I’m a bit confused. In your previous video regarding the dirted tank ingredients you mentioned 16 cup of potting soil, 16 cup of cow manure and 16 cup of peat moss for a 55g tank. In this video the quantities have changed. You mention 8 cups of peat moss, 4 cups of potting soil and 4 cups of cow manure for a 55g tank. Which one is correct? My other question is: Is a substrate made of 1 inch dirt and two inches of sand enough in a 55g tank? Some of your tanks seem to have a much deeper substrate.

I may have been misunderstood. The second ratio of soils is correct. A larger tank does better with deeper substrate. Go to 6" and 8" over 100 gallons.

​@@FatherFish Thanks for confirming! I ended up going with coir in my 10, 20, and 2.5 gallon tanks. Afterwards I was doing some reading and found out that peat moss is actually categorized as a non-renewable resource so coir is the more environmentally sound choice apparently!

Can horticultural hydrated lime be use in place of the lime and calcium on your list? Having a difficult time finding the Calciums on your list. It has Calcium 51%Calcium oxide 72.50% Calcium Hydroxide 95.79% Magnesium oxide .45% Calcium carbonate equivalent 131% E.N.P & E.N.V. 130.35 % of each. Not sure what these are. Derived from : Hydrated Lime Not sure if this would be to strong, or how much to use if it replaces the Calcium chloride, C. Fluoride & lime on your list. Thank You !!

diatoms. The white powder is mined from fossil beds. It is referred to as diatomaceous earth. It has many uses including food and medical.

I have FF dirted tank. All my plant roots are black even if I don’t plant them no more than 1 cm or 2 cm. Even the leaf litters covered and buried by sand because of the bubbling of the substrate turned black. (They were 1 cm under the sand) I don’t know what it is but I think this is caused by anaerobic conditions or the burning of the roots because of the nutrients. Should I add 1 more inch of sand to put my plant roots? Does adding more sand cause the death of the bacteria on the underlying sand and cause ammonia spike?

By mixing sodium bicarbonate and calcium chloride, in the presence of water you make very fine particles of calcium carbonate, sodium chloride. And carbon dioxide. So using finely ground eggs shells would be somewhat similar. The particle size will be larger, and you'll be missing some sodium chloride, and lose some of the carbonate as CO2 Of course when you mix everything together... It gets more complicated.. so... I'd go with a definitive 'probably'. 😂

Thanks for your replies! I have a shrimp/nano tank I do a water change once a month. I used UNS Contrasoil 2in with 3 in sand cap. It’s been going for 5 yrs anything will grow in that tank. Now I know why from your videos. Thank you!

@@FatherFish I got my tank up and running it's only small, 47 liters about 12 gallons. I have 5 grown plants in the tank so far with 4 minnows and 2 goldfish. I have a waterfall type filter but I'm going to change to a sponge filter. I have added some leafs and a bit of dirt from a stream in my local park. Is there anything else I need to do is 5 plants enough for that size tank ?

How has your tank responded to the Ocean Forest soil? I’m getting ready to build my 29 gallon tank and this is the same soil I went with. Just need to add the manure and peat moss to the mix. I ended up purchasing the FF supplements to add to the mixture out of convenience.

@@somethingsfishy7662 Hello. The tank is doing very well. It’s my first tank dirt and black sand as a cap tank The plants are doing great and some of them have already spread roots through the sand and are now growing new plants. Some of the plants have came up right at the glass and the roots are reaching down to the dirt. I also added some plant fertilizer to the dirt. I used osmocote. I added three fish after about a few weeks and added 7 or 8 more. As far as I can tell they are all still alive. The glass seems to get dirty in this tank faster than the others. I wrapped the filter intake with a piece of filter foam to help just in case it ducks up any sand. Good luck 🍀

Ferric oxide is an iron oxide. Iron (III) oxide or ferric oxide is the inorganic compound with the formula Fe2O3. It is one of the three main oxides of iron, the other two being iron (II) oxide (FeO) the rarer form, and iron (II,III) oxide (Fe3O4) which naturally as magnetite. For our purposes there is no effective difference. The chelation process, requisite for the release of botanically available iron, occurs in all forms of iron oxide.

Can you get all this stuff at the garden centre ✌️👍🇨🇦🙏

May I ask the best sites to buy soil without fertilizer online? The places I have access to near me to go and get dirt outside are contaminated with pesticides and chemicals.

would coconut peat work instead of the peat moss? it's cheaper here

Dear Father Fish, I am setting up a 10 gallon dirted tank with the formula in this video. I've gathered all the ingredients from my gardening friends except epsom salts. I thought I had epsom salts that I'd bought for the bath, but what I have is magnesium flakes magnesium chloride. One cup contains 90grams magnesium chloride. Is this an acceptable substitute? The last ingredient b4 the additives was Cow Manure? The audio cutout. Also the Very last additive after the lime also cutout and impossible to hear.

Hi, yes it was cow manure, I believe he was using Black Cow but probably doesn't have to specifically be that brand, heck I think I saw him say on another vid that horse [composted] was good too. The last additive was Diatomaceous Earth @ 1 'handful' - the part that drives me nuts is the non-specific '2 small handfuls'/'1 handful' stuff. I like specifics. Hope this helps.

Put 1" of the mud in the tank and cap it with 2" of sand. Then add as many fast growing plants as you can find. Two days later put a few small fish in the tank. It will be fine.

What else do i need to buy to go with your mix you sell?

for the dirt layer use potting soil and mix in any kind of animal mulch - sheep, goat, pig - weter to a mud consistency, pour in the tank and cover carefully with 2-3 inches of sand before adding water. Add water VERY carefully. Do not disturb the sand/dirt substrate. NEVER clean or stir the bottom.

Any kind of sand is suitable if it is not soluble. It must be inert. silica is the most common but granite, slag, volcanic rock, are all perfect. Grain size must be in the range of sand, not gravel. Very fine works fine. Coarse is perfect.

So I can order your soil additive and save some time and money purchasing all of the above?

Peat provides buffer, bulk, a loamy texture, and, as aquatic plant material, is precise for plant nutrients.

Have you tried Organic Seaweed concentrate? “Kelpak by garden care” Active ingredient Natural Auxins 2,2mg/l and cytokinins I was thinking of adding 1/4 cup to my large substrate mix (using germinating mix for small amount of peat moss as I do not know if I can find lime powder where I’m at) . My only fear is the high solubility of this fertilizer as it comes as a concentrate liquid and is meant to be diluted. I plan on capping with sand well (please make a video talking about different kinds of cap substrate choices and depth). Do you think the sea weed will pollute my water?

Hello @FatherFish, hope everything is well. I have question I don't know if I over did with the fertilizer and stuff. I finished tank on Monday and today around 10am my living room smell pretty bad. There was some air bubbles coming up and I think the gasses from the dirt are coming up... is this something normal??

Is there issue with having to many plants.

I like the Florida pool filter sand. It is clean, white, and uniform.

I have 2 40 breeders set up with dirted substrate with supplements, one tank fresh water & one brackish. I have a new unused 40 breeder and have been thinking about a dirted substrate with supplements but this tank will be salt water with some saltwater plants, corals, and some macro alage, whats your opion on a dirted saltwater tank Father Fish ?

I use natural sand as a substrate, no dirt in salt system.
